When I did melee White Mage/Ninja for...I dunno, twenty some levels, I had Thieves trick attacking me all the time. Between shadows, flash and stoneskin, among the odd gear I would wear (Defense heavy) I usualy lasted probably 25-50% of the mobs life before registering damage on myself. Some were timid but it works out in the end when I want to proceed with the killings.

Why SATA a WHM when he can just let everyone get really low on HP and then open up with a Curaga 4 soon as the next mob is pulled?

(Did that at Mamools, nobody was able to rip hate of me)

Or you can simply tele your party when a HNM / Ground King is @ 5%-
