i think you know better than that really. the managers don't have the athletes best interests in mind anymore than dana cares what happens to that same athlete ten years from now. they have their own goals and interests in mind just like any agent in any form, ever. i really don't see why this is such a big deal...pro-wrestling has these same contracts, as do some boxers to certain video games. the video game companies are the ones putting these contracts forward, not the UFC. he is just trying to protect his baby (the ufc) by doing what he can to make this quick. he may be bullheaded and an asshole...but he always has been, the managers should know that by now and know how to deal with him accordingly.

all this dana hate kinda catches me off guard. as a fighter, i am really glad he's where he's at in this sport. he has made it through some tough times and made some great decisions against a lot of peoples "better" judgment. if it weren't for him, the sport wouldn't be near as big as it is right now...hell, "senator" mccain might still be fighting it and calling it "human cockfighting".

My problem is that I have never liked Dana White from day one. It's because he lets his ego get in the way of making sound business decisions. This is not a sound business decision whatsoever. All he's done is send a couple of very good, popular fighters right towards Affliction.

fitch just re-signed, and signed the contract. the other cat whose name escapes me got picked back up as well.

sometimes, in business, you gotta be the bully. they acted bad...he called their bluff and fired them...they came running back and rescinded all their comments that quick.

i don't see how you can say he let his ego get in the way of sound business decisions. which ones? the company and sport in general is bigger than ever and it's mostly because of dana. i can't think of anything he's let his "ego" get in the way of.

What you mean to say is, Dana White controls the virtual monopoly, the fighters have to bow to his demands, and they realize he's a tyrant.

There's no viable alternative out there.

please...i don't want to hear anyone who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year doing something they love complain. let's just say i do the same thing and work a job full-time, and don't make near that. there's a lot more opportunity in MMA than there is in boxing where only 2% make over 100k a year. i wish another company would make it and be successful, but there's really not a "big" one yet...so you deal with what's there. that's not dana's fault, that just shows his business acumen for making ufc so popular.

You'll never hear me argue that he's not a good businessman - he's so good in fact that he aggressively competes to bankrupt competitors, as he should from a bottom-line standpoint.

It's not an ideal situation for employees - monopolies rarely are. If Dana really cared about his fighters, however, he would negotiate better terms for the video game, instead of just passing along their contracts to the fighters and then bullying them, even firing them, when they object to a lifelong contract.

But, he's a businessman. He's supposed to be worried about his bottom line, first and foremost, and that's what he does. Just don't try to candy-coat it. He's a very good businessman.

Fitch doesn't "love Dana", and Fitch didn't "leave" - he was fired, albeit temporarily.

Noblemountain, do you disagree that Dana could've forseen that signing beyond-lifetime contracts would've been a problem for some of the fighters, and done something to prevent the controversy? I mean, jesus christ, there's plenty of video game manufacturers, and there's only one UFC. He holds all the chips in that negotiation, why pass along a contract like that?

Just to flex your cock size?

    Thought so.

while there are "plenty of game manufacturers" and he is the "only" ufc...nobody was jumping at the opportunity to do this game. they had to basically beg THQ to do it. now...that was almost 3 years ago and shit has changed, but they're in too deep now to dump THQ and go with the new game that EA's putting out. i'm sure if EA had been willing to do this a long time ago we'd have a better game than whatever garbage i'm sure THQ will dump on us, but EA didn't...THQ did...and here we are.

i am not saying the dude is without fault and is the almighty. i am just saying that WAY too many people dump on the guy for absolutely no reason whatsoever. every time i go to sherdog i wanna puke 'cause all i see are anti-dana threads.

you're right, he's a great business man. he has a polarizing personality...hell...most confident men do. he is just in front of you more than most and people blame him when whatever fighter gripes about not making 250k on the last fight instead of 200k, or some overpaid primadonna bitches because he actually has to fight real competition instead of nobody's. (i'm looking at you tito.) the most common thing that guys bitch over is just simple jealousy. who wouldn't love to be in his position? everybody thinks they can do it better too.

...is childish and completely unprofessional and makes you a shitty boss in that respect.

The best thing about Dana as a boss is that he keeps the company generating revenues which then get partially passed onto the workers. Outside of that...he's an asshole and deserves to be slammed as such.

While Im not sure about the other aspects of your post your video game knowledge is extremly off, EA is famous for putting out shitty games and shoveling the same shit every year and THQ is and has been very successful with wrestleing franchises and the like. Well I bet your your going to say well thats wrestleing and this isnt, their quite close in some aspects and what THQ has shown thus far looks like whats shapeing up to be a good game.

This is actually a considerably outdated view. That's the EA of a few years ago. Since then, they've been ramping things up. They have a lot of franchises they tend to well, such as "Burnout," and they have some incredibly excellent new IPs, like "Mirror's Edge" and "Dead Space." Add other titles like "Spore," "Left 4 Dead," "skate," and "Command and Conquer," and they have an extremely strong roster.

    Activision is the new EA.

EA is still EA, they just haven't had a chance to run all their new franchises into the ground yet.

all i know about the game is that the new trailer looked horrible. the "jerkiness" in between motions seemed like there was some sort of "grapple" system where the characters paused in-between movements and looked really sluggish. i know EA has put out crap, but their games are generally good.

i never said dana wasn't flexing his muscle on this. i just said their managers and handlers should have known better than to do whatever it is they did to get it this far. i think you'll find there was a lot more shit going on than what we heard.

White said the AKA fighters “aren’t partners with us” and said they don’t understand what the UFC is trying to do for the sport. White said the UFC’s current success was because of long hours he and partner Lorenzo Fertitta have put in trying to build the company and the sport of mixed martial arts.

White complained that he has to make frequent sacrifices in his personal life and is away from his family for long stretches because of his commitment to growing the UFC.
QQ much? Wtf does he think fighters do? Serious top contenders are in the gym 6+ hours a day (some might be there even longer, I dunno, I never hang around for the insane hours they do.) They're away from their families, too. And on top of all that, they are getting their limbs wrenched on and getting punched in the face. As soon as Dana starts getting stuck in kimuras and catches right crosses with his nose on a daily basis, he can complain about long hours away from home. Until then, he should shut his fucking bitch mouth, because the fighters are the ones who are really making the sacrifices with their own blood and sweat.

Don't get me wrong, he will stick with fighers he believes in through thick and thin (for the most part) from what I've heard. But still, when he makes statements like that my eyes roll so hard I think they're going to fly out of my skull.

L4D is only being published by EA due to Valve's contract with them. Valve is not an in-house studio for EA, and I'd splatter my brains on the wall if they ever did get fully acquired. They do not own L4D.

Spore was written off as a failure once everyone caught wind of its DRM scheme.

C&C - fuck them for dismantling Westwood.

People may be turned off from the Mirror's Edge franchise if it continues to be as short as the first one.
