    Windows movie player help

    Whenever I go to make a movie from footage I took from ffxi with Fraps, it crashes often. I usually ahve to save project every minute or 2 before it crashes or I can never get anything done. Anyone know what the problem is?

    Edit: Meant to say movie maker, not player in title

    It's a problem with windows movie maker, I always had that problem with movie maker.

    I found it helped to run the whole file through the movie maker encoder first, it doesn't like working with 3gig files lol.

    Yeah movie maker hates large files but it also has a lot of compatibility plugins and encoders loaded by default that it doesn't always need. If I have a file that's crashing it a lot I'll go in and uncheck a bunch of them. You can find them under Tools --> Options --> Compatibility tab. The Nero ones have always been a problem for me in particular. You can also use a program like Cut Assistant to break up the movie into smaller bits that movie maker might handle better.

    Wasn't too many in compatibility for me, but I unchecked all the ones that didn't have AVI in it (so that left me with 2) and still crashed right away ; ;

    Are you making a movie with headers, fade-ins/outs, and other special effects, or are you just trying to re-encode it?

    I get the error just from adding the video to the trey and hitting play to see how it'd come out before I did anything to it. Last night, I was having to save project every minuet or so. It was at the point to once I had my video done, the music i placed for it was about 20 seconds over and I couldn't even click the end of the video to split the rest and delete it w/o it crashing

    I've used a ton of moviemaker in the past before I could afford anything along the lines of vegas. Anyways it did crash literally every so often while editing/rendering final video.

    Why? Not sure, but it is Microsoft.

    What Hiroko said. Even after I removed all extra encoders I didn't need the thing will still crash sometimes just trying to load up my current collection. But it at least made it less frequent.
