So I'm Better than average STR/END and 1 DIS/REC. I've been trying the second official race (day 34ish boko) and getting my ass handed to me. I've been using Final Spurt/Speed Apple. I don't understand how I'm coming in 3rd-7th most of the time, and once I came in second. Not only does no other chocobo have STR or END as high, but none have even both at Average. Why am I getting pwn'd? Is it random as hell?

Until you have Outstanding or FirstClass STR and END, you are going to get your butt kicked. Even then you'll still lose sometimes. Even people with capped chocobos 8/7/4/4 with Gallop and Canter sometimes lose, but the better your choco, the more chance of winning. I wouldn't even try anymore official races until you have FirstClass STR/END.

8/7/4/4/g/c and I lose quite a bit. I'd even go as far to say that this is NOT the ideal chocobo setup :/

I'd say for the official races it's completely luck based, but within the circuit I win about 4/7 or 5/7 on average so I win like 60-80% of the time~

I hadn't seen this posted previously. Here's a warning to racers who take a vacation. After 4 weeks you lose all your solo victory points. I actually knew about this because it happened to a friend but I lost track of time

Oh wow you're right. I totally misinterpreted what they meant by "deduct." It seems the npc is trying to say I deducted 1 point from your total leaving you with 2099 remaining. Regardless I should have double checked. Here's from today:

The Chocobo Circuit has more textual errors than anything else in the game, I suspect. Announcing race signups opening when they've actually closed every 15 minutes, npcs referring to birds in upcoming races by what are presumably their internal IDs instead of their names. Great stuff.

Obviously Square's interest in chocobo racing is no higher than the players'.

Well if you think about it, it IS a constantly updating system that has to run automatically, with so damn many variables its not even funny.

I do have to say the biggest glitch Ive seen yet is if you zone out of the viewing area as a race starts, your screen goes permanently black even after zoning back in.

the only way to fix it is to use a warp npc if you can make your way to it.

My chocobo hit First-Class STR and END a few days ago. I started exhibiting to the public to raise DSC to teach stories. After 3 days worth STR lowered to Outstanding and END is still First-Class. I have both Canter and Gallop stories.

    Am I doing the right thing, or should I take a different course of action? I don't want to mess it up 50 days in ;_;

Edit: DSC and Receptivity are both still "Poor"

If you register your bird for racing as it is, its stats dont change til you reregister, so just stack up your chocobucks and burn them in discernment upgrades while raising it with exhibit to public.

You need to basically zerg discernment to average asap and teach it those stories before you hit that forced retirement.

So when Discernment is @ Average my STR and END will have plummeted, and I'll have to re-raise those?

Depends how hardcore you got at it. I myself didnt even use a care plan and just stayed on basic, and entirely built up my discernment via chocotrains.

But yes you'll have to reraise them, and DO NOT reregister your bird even once you have canter and gallop, wait until your str/disc are at about 7 again before reregistering.

Basically once you have canter and gallop set, as you can still reraise stats after retirement, but you cant learn a new ability after retirement.

How many days do I have until retirement? I'm doing this now on like day 54? Don't I still have a long time to use care plans to raise STR/END back up?

Oh easily, I believe its day 130? or is it 160?

Should take you about 20 days of racing to get discernment up to average and another 2-3 days to learn the story.

Hi! Since I'm bored as hell these days, I've decided to try chocobo raising. But there are so many things that are missing in the guides.

First of all, at the actual time, how many gils am I gonna spend from hatch to retirement and above? Will they be refunded enough with racing or digging?
If there isn't any convenience, I won't try at all, or at least I will try to raise a cheap chocobo just for having the whistle.

Also, I've got 3 eggs, from quest and ISNMs: bit warm, little warm and somewhat warm. What the heck is the difference between them? I wasn't able to find it nowhere...

    Thanks in advance..

Racing: Normal racer will make you some gil, and costs roughly 150K or so to raise, not even.

Hardcore racer: (capped stats) my bird cost me roughly 3 million gil in races to cap my stats, very very expensive D:

Digger: Diggers are dirt cheap to make, and the reward is pretty decent in hot and cold once you get to altep. I often dig up items worth 40-50K there, though generally they're in the 6K and 20K market each. It pays for itself pretty fast

I have a guide on otherwiki that gives you step by step what to do raising on day by day basis. Might be what your looking for:

Breeders Guide by Urat - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more

as for my color theory, feel free to believe it or not, its up to you. I've gotten a number of PMs on wiki, in game, and on forums telling me it worked for people, but it might be fluke. The confirmed factor of choco color is parents color, as an NPC actually talks about that.

Thank you so much urat, I had already got a glance at your guide.

I can't afford 3 millions, at least not for something that doesn't give me back them. How is hardcore racing? Somewhat profitable or just for fun? The best reward is 100k gil, but how many time you can race in a day?
I can afford 150k, it's far more reasonable, but how many gils could I make with that?
Am I gonna spending money on a chocobo even after retirement?

At this point I'm seriously tempted by the digging option, but I've always too many things to sell on AH. At least the races are money-awarding.

And there is another question, which I did not find in your guide. It may seem obvious but... can I have only one chocobo?
I've read you can trade another egg after retirement, but does the older choco remain? For example, can I raise a digger, and then a racer, and use them both? Or should I make a decision in advance?

PS. it sounds odd, but I don't give a sh*t about the color of my chocobo, I just wanna some reward from it, since I'm gonna spending time and money

if you have a good plan from the get-go, I'd say 3mil is a bit high. Green Gallop/Canter 8/7/4/4 capped bird probably cost me 1mil, tops. But I was *very* dedicated, and raced as much as I could every night without overdoing it.

Came down to the wire, though.
