XBOX Live Membership

So my gold membership ended and now I can't log onto FFXI because I can't log onto XBOX Live. I read somewhere that FFXI can run on a silver membership, but how do I go about switching from gold to silver?

You'll be switched to a silver account automatically when your gold membership expires. Did you receive a notice about your expiration when you tried to log on again?

Ok, I'm not aware that it does downgrade automatically (stupid me) but I still can't log onto FFXI, because it says that my account is suspended due to a problem with my payment option, and it tells me to use a different payment option or update my current information, but the thing is I'm not in the financial position to pay for xboxlive again, and it wont let me change anything.

edit: I know I'm coming off really stupid, I'm use to PS3.

Unfortunately, when you pay for a Gold account with a credit card (which sounds like what you were doing), you have to call up Microsoft to completely deactivate it. If you use cards you buy in a store, you are downgraded to Silver automatically and are not bothered further.
