Japanese Characters (legitimately)

I've used the search function for the site and google but can't find a definitive answer on what I actually need to do to type in hiragana/katakana/and lolkanji for FFXI.

Do I need to install an actual copy of the JP FFXI client, or just POL and use IME, or what? I've learned a fair amount of japanese and am trying to hone my skills, and this game would be the perfect way of doing so. If anyone could post, or post a link to, a step-by-step guide for me (with working links), I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance ^.^

All you need is Japanese PlayOnline, FFXI itself contains all of the files for NA/JP/EU regardless of what it was installed as. It's been ages since I've done it so I don't remember the exact key, but you just have to add a registry key pointing to your NA FFXI to get it to be recognized in JP POL.

2) Where would I find JP PoL? (can try to find that myself, though a link would help)

I am uploading my personal JP POL that i bought while i was in Japan. I threw in my For dummies guide on the .iso as well. While we wait for the upload you need to start by doing a few things.If you have XP(Vista is very similar): First in Control Panel > Regional & language options: Install all of the eastern languages packs. Then in the Advanced tab Change "Language for non-Unicode Programs" to Japanese. This WILL make a LOT of installers in Japanese but it is necessary if you want Type in Hirigana legit.

1.) No, And if a GM asks say you purchased it. So far i have been GMed twice for JP in my Bazaar comment. I logged on JP PoL and they left me alone.

Edit: Link added. I suggest you get the "Megaupload toolbar" to get this. It will give you free premium and you can uninstall it after.

I just have both versions installed on the same comp lol. Messy, but works.

But even when I'm on the NA version, I have Japanese text in my bazaar comment, and search comment via macros. Only once has a GM asked how I had the text, and I just explained that I had both versions.

Though, there was one time I used ALT+0189 (i think) for the ½ ASCII character in conversation with a GM, and he started saying how using Japanese characters is illegal and against the ToS etc. You can't even use ASCII codes on the Japanese version, that's NA client exclusive. I just explained to him how to make them, and he spent the next 15 minutes making random characters and sending them to me in tells >.>;

But yea, the only legit way you'll get them is to use the JP client, or make your game think it's using the JP client (and I don't think that's even legit).

I rarely ever log in to my JP POL (I just use IME now), and I have JP characters in my macros, seacoms and bazzar even after switching to NA and ive never had a GM ask me about it. I think someone really has to hate you so much that they report you for using JP lol.

It's about the same as SephYuyX for me. I don't log into my JP POL often anymore (out of laziness, or sometimes simply unable to read the JP text fast enough for LS events). So, I just tend to turn on IME if I need to speak in JP. I have JP characters in my Bazaar comment and macros, and I've never gotten GM'd for it. If I did, I'd just sign into my JP client like other people have been saying.

Also, it possible to switch the text files around so the CSs and dialog will be still be in English. You might want the Japanese there to help learn, but all those Kanji can get overwhelming (especially for a beginner). It is an option. I don't have the link to how to do that anymore, but I think it was on the windower site.
