At the same time a lot of these players put themselves in these positions. If you're so worried about getting jacked, don't go out to NY clubs at 3 in the morning. Don't wear some crazy ass shiny watch, don't make it rain every time you go to a club, and spray champagne on people. Have your bodyguard be the one with the gun, and make sure he doesn't get drunk and do some stupid shit like shoot you in the leg.

Wasn't his license in Florida expired though? Yeah I had no idea Smith was held at gun point, being a victim isn't news I guess.

steve smith was robbed outside his own house....Antoine walker was robbed at gunpoint in his own living room.... sean taylor was shot and killed in his own bedroom.

the players don't decide when and where they'll become a victim, and criminals aren't tethered to street corners/clubs.

Richard Collier lost a leg and is paralyzed waist down. Player safety is being ignored for the most part, but these players also need to conduct themselves properly too (TJ, Henry, Adam Jones, Matt Jones, etc etc).

    Random Note

I see the Texans in the playoffs in 3 years or less.

You've heard it here first sports fans.

I don't really see what is very bold about that statement, the NFL is always having teams rise and fall rapidly, just look at the NFC South. The Texans have all the right pieces in place to become a solid team and honestly I'm surprised they aren't better even this season. 3 years is a pretty long time especially for a team already showing as much promise as the Texans.

You want to go to a club and spend $2,000 a night on drinks (then again, plax is known for walking out on bar tabs), pay $500 for a bodyguard that night. The gun wasn't even fucking holstered, he had it tucked into his belt, it fell, he went to grab it and shot himself. I'm not buying the "he's been registered before, he knows how to handle it obviously...". No, obviously he doesn't. Take his ass to jail.

How do you have a belt with Sweatpants? I'm mostly curious on how sweatpants would even hold a gun... then again I guess they didn't lol.

Maybe it was sweatpants, I had just read that he had it tucked into his waist...just assumed belt. Sweatpants makes it so much worse than a belt. Elastic strap holding a gun...great idea!

    Well obviously... lol
But what I don't understand is why Plax should be paying for his own protection. If the NFL gave a shit about it's player's, they'd arrange THEIR OWN protection service for them when needed.

If the robber who held up Steve Smith actually shot him in the back, what would the NFL and the Giants say? "Sorry to hear the bad news, but we'll be cutting you at the end of the season. Nice knowing ya, don't let the door hit you on the back of your wheel chair!"

That's noone's fault but the players. The union votes on a collective bargaining agreement, they could/should add that in. The NFL can't just throw security on everyone and babysit them.

That's a tough issue in itself, because you know those players wouldn't want the cost of that protection coming out of their multi-million salaries, and should the NFL be responsible footing the cost of someone's bodyguard so they can be out at a strip club at 2-5am?

The issue is for the few players with a legitimate issues who are good people, who just show up to work and plays the game(which is most the league) and then has some bad shit happen to them, there's a fucktard like Plax/Jones/Johnson/etc. who ends up in the news, completely refuting the case that the good players have.

I agree with this. But i highly doubt the players union will get something like that to pass. (the sheer money involved with something like that would be insane)

I see it as a double edged sword. The steve smith thing (which i didnt know about) is what the league should be concerned about. The Plax incident SHOULDNT concern the league, because thats just an idiot putting himself in a bad situation.

And you could make the argument that the people who need the protection make enough damn money to get it themselves. The NFL would say something like "This is a reason why you have such high-tier salaries". Non-NFL players hire "Running crews" all the time. I dont see why they cant either.

Edit: Slow typer, what Tyche said basically.

My whole thing is why was there a bullet in the chamber. Sure, pack heat, but I guess gun safety wasn't a big concern. Maybe now it will be.

The NFL wouldn't and shouldn't be footing the bill. The NFLPA should. The players put in a ton of money into union contributions, but you have to convince the 95% of the players to pay the extra dues for the 5% of the idiots that need protection. I'm not saying that it's always the 5%'s fault, but I'd say the random holdup/robbery is few and far between. Most of the players needing the security put themselves in those situations.

Especially with as fucked up as the economy/NFL ticket prices are now, as Joe Schmoe or w/e am I supposed to drop another $15/ticket to take my kids to see a game, dropping $3-400 on nosebleed seats to watch someone drop passes or get held out of a game because they didn't feel it was important enough to make a team meeting, so that they can have free bodyguards at the bar?

I don't feel that the NFL really does enough for players, especially in terms of pension/medical help for former players, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit and QQ for someone who gets paid millions to play a game.

Why carry a gun if there isn't any bullets in it?
