Not that I think you are, but I also disagree with you that the gaming world (as it were) is so openly misogynist or just straight up anti-girl gamer. Granted, there's a difference in the way a lot of people react to situations given gender, but I don't think it's that big of a deal, at least not with any people I run with.

I have, and I'm sure everyone has, had a fair share of male leaders and officers that have done straight up bullshit moves to other players and guild mates. It's not a gender bias, just something that a lot of people have seen happen with female leadership.

Anyway, I wasn't implying misogyny is the norm- but male gamers (guessing it's stemmed from the FPS genre) have a stigma to be misogynistic. This hasn't been my experience, thank goodness, but in all honesty guys do treat you different once the learn the toon who's out-DPSing them has a chick behind it.

One bad apple and all that. The attitudes towards females in gaming has come a long way, but its no where near equality levels. Sort of like real life, heh.

Fair enough, I'll agree with you wholeheartedly on that note, for the most part.

So I've got a warrior at 80 I'd like to start gearing up so I can get him in on heroic farming runs, but I'm having a lot of trouble keeping threat on large pulls of 4+ mobs. Good examples are the raptor packs before King Dred in DTK. I yank in a mob with heroic throw or charge into it, and then a mob that loves to root and run spawns along side it. Meanwhile dps immediately starts to AOE when I have zero threat on both adds.

I can yell at the dpsers to stop AOEing so hard but it seems Clap > Demo > Wave still isn't enough to keep some of the targets from running at the clothies. Meanwhile melee is ripping threat off a single target if I elect not to spend the first 1.5 seconds of the pull with a shield-slam + devastate to get initial target aggro popped on me. The better geared my dps is, the worse the problem gets, and I don't want to build a rep as the tank in blues who can't hold threat for shit.

I don't have a lot of trouble on single target threat, it's the big elite packs that are killing my dps because I can't out-threat high-critting AOE. I wonder what other tanks do before they're ridiculously geared to glue a pack of 4-5 mobs on a prot warrior during heroics?

There's not many mob packs in reg toc and that should get you mostly epic geared pretty quick, doing that along with htoc should get you more geared. Don't know anything about aoe tanking though.

I'm mostly struggling in situations where the dps gear vastly outstrips my gear's ability to generate sufficient threat, and warriors don't have as much spammable/passive AOE threat as other tanks. I guess reg ToC will have to be my ball n chain till I get more strength on my gear.

Maybe you should try shockwave first on those packs, as while they're stunned you can thunderclap/demo shout and hit a couple with your shield.

Since you should have abundant rage tanking aoe packs in blues, you should invest in a glyph of cleave spec into improved cleave and cleave spam instead of hs spam in aoe packs. I find that charge > shockwave > tc > ds while cleave spamming and tab targeting with shield bashes and sunders glues aoe packs pretty effectively. There's also no shame in informing your DPS, especially well geared aoe-ers that your gear is lacking and to watch threat, also marking your targets may help. If you're fast with your mouse a mouseover macro for your taunt can be invaluable. Never be afraid to blow retaliation on tough aoe packs either, it's often put to better use there than on jokingly easy heroic bosses. If it's realyl bad, a point thrown into Piercing Howl could help as well.

if you want, theres a newish mod out there that automatically places a skull on any target your currently focusing on. would definitely help make sure dps are sticking to your primary target at all times until your gear is strong enough to handle them attacking other mobs.

Is there a rhyme or reason to the use of "chance" on weapon descriptions in terms of proc rate or potency, or is it as random as it can be?

I'm still in the FFXI mindset where each item has an innate proc rate for those additional effects.

it usually has a certain percentage that some theorycrafter will figure out. either its PPM which usually is 1.16, or something around 40-45% procrate

Most 'proc' effects on weapons/trinkets work on a PPM system, where your odds of getting a proc are normalized against your weapon speed to give you a more or less precise and equal proc chance from one item to the next, and to avoid favoring faster swinging weapons.

The trick is, the PPM model assumes weapon swings only ("white attacks"), while the actual proc can trigger off your special abilities as well. This means in most cases your chances of getting a proc are significantly better than the typical PPM rate (which is usually 1); for example, my druid's bear form has a weapon speed of 3.6, which means the % chance of getting a Mongoose proc off my weapon is actually pretty high...and since I'm using an instant attack every GCD, I essentially always have the Mongoose effect up, because the procs keep refreshing themselves.

Okay, so there is a system, that's good to know, thank you.

What gets me is that I've had this trinket for a while now:

Valonforth's Remembrance - Item - World of Warcraft

And it procs at the funniest times. I assume HoT effects must be able to trigger it as well, because there are times when I'm definitely not casting, and my toon gives the little touchdown animation and gets the effect.

You can game this to your advantage, carry around a stack of crystallized earth and turn it into eternal earth at the start of a fight to proc trinkets like that and bang, you'll have the trinket effect for your first cast of the fight, rather than having to wait for your 2nd+ cast to have the effect.

It's actually kind of irritating sometimes, like if you use egg as a healer in arena and you're a class that tosses up buffs right before gates open, a lot of the time it'll proc right then and be on icd when you actually start fighting.

Also the range on that stuff is unlimited, I've had the ret libram proc right when I ressed in WSG gy from SoV ticking on the enemy FC inside his own base.

One thing left out of the proc discussion is how many many many current trinkets work.

They use a "chance on proc" at usually something between 10 and 25%, and after they've been activated have an ICD (Internal CoolDown) which is usually 45 seconds.

For instance I'll use the Abyssal rune since I'm highly familiar with it.

It has a 25% chance to proc on harmful spell casts, and a 45 sec. internal cooldown. So the chances that it procs *very soon* in a new fight are high, and then it goes on cooldown for 45 seconds. In practice, this particular trinket gives around 20% uptime during a fight in which I'm constantly casting.

So, there are different kinds of procs. PPM, and % chance with internal cooldown. There may be more idk
