I'm still trying to come up with a rough rule of thumb for gear as a Disc Priest.

I notice that, between caster and healer gear, the only difference between similar pieces of gear is Haste verus Spirit.

Since all I really care about is my Penance cooldown, and I'm already looking for SP and Crit improvements (and ignoring gear with +hit), is there a reason why I should go for Spirit over Haste?

The disc priests I know run like 15% haste or something (~600 rating), it supposedly really helps with being able to drop FH quickly and get shields/PoMs out in between.

Spirit itself is symbiotic with Intellect, you get the most oomph in regen out of it the closer the two are to 1:1.

Spirit for Discipline is largely a waste. It helps to think of a Discipline Priest as a pro-active version of Holy Paladin. Intellect is your friend, Haste helps when you can get it, and Crits are your bread-and-butter. Crits should be obvious as they proc Divine Aegis, which is basically a combination of extra healing done (that won't show up on meters, sadly) and effective health padding, but it's more or less "spammable" since there's no Weakened Soul to worry about. If you're rolling out Shields constantly, and you should try to do so as much as mana allows and the situation dictates (there's no longer a reason to Shield the raid after Festerguy uses Inhale Blight thrice), then Borrowed Time pads your spell Haste enough that you only need something like 11-15% Haste in gear to have your GCD bottomed out. Of course, you're not always dropping Shields like a madman, so it never hurts to have a little more as long as it is coming with a good chunk of Spellpower and Intellect.

Either way, you're likely to pick up some Spirit along the way, but Discipline doesn't mesh well with Spirit. In a bit of perversion, Blizzard made it so that Shadow and Holy Priests get a Spellpower conversion from Spirit (hence why you'll see that Shadow Priests actually have more than 150 Spirit these days), but couldn't extend any such courtesy to Discipline, not even via Intellect as they do with Holy Paladins.

Speaking of Haste and Discipline, though, since Penance is a channeled spell, it gains the Haste benefit from Borrowed Time without consuming it. Knowing Blizzard, they will eventually fix it, but enjoy it while you can, since it effectively makes Penance cast as fast as Flash Heal but heal more than Greater Heal, and then you can toss out a hastened Flash Heal or Prayer of Healing or what have you after it is done.

Fully raid buffed and with borrowed time a disc priest is "haste capped" with 11% haste. This is only directly after you use a shield though and only if you have a boomkin/ret pally + shaman dropping the 5% haste totem. If your normal spell rotation involves a shield every other cast then just get to 11% haste and don't really worry about spirit or haste...just take whichever upgrade comes your way for SP/crit. It doesn't make a huge difference.

That said, I can still oom on my disc priest, usually only if I'm throwing out a lot of prayer of healing, but it's still possible. So I wouldn't say spirit is wholly useless. I'm above haste cap on my priest though, at 14-15% haste so I'm pretty much ignoring haste sidegrades and only looking for SP/crit ones.

This is the big difference between Discipline Priest (maybe Holy Priest, too? I don't know Holy) and every other healer. I really don't get what Blizz's strategy is with Priests, but it always seems to be devoted to making no one want to play them compared to the other options available.

Well, I've not researched enough on Haste caps to understand where to be, so I appreciate the numbers being thrown my way. I recognize that SP is god, Crit is close to god, and anything else comes third.

I'm certain I'm not at 11% Haste, so I'll have to look that up and start playing the dress up game to see how my stats combine with different pieces.

    I appreciate the insight.

I don't really mind it. I like that if I do stupid stuff I'll get penalized for it. I only go oom if I don't balance my cooldowns and spam inefficient heals. And I can still get better gear to reduce the threat of ooming. But it only happens when I'm healing at a subpar level, so I like that I get checked for my healing.

Is there any heroic you can solo on prot paladin? I realized earlier that I can solo most pull easily (in stratholme). I supose boss would be the part i should worry about, but old boss hit pretty damn weak.

Has anyone seen calculations for average ilvl > scaling vehicle HP numbers? I need to know just how many epics I need on my green/blue shaman before I can reasonably take him to FL for the weekly raid. My awful warrior died after like 3 minutes (heli aggro just as they pulled FL) and my shaman's gear is even worse. I know I can just hop into a turret and survive naked but I'm really curious how it works anyway.

Yeah FL is easily doable with 5. Shoot down loads of pyrite before the fight then 1 siege and 2 demos+gunners. Stack pyrite like crazy and go to town.

ilvl200 epics and blues mix is enough, any less than that and you end up being so weak you cant even shoot barrels down with the turrets on the demos = no pyrite = useless demolisher. doesnt matter much if the people in the other demo have 226+ gear since its easily duo'd by a competent single demo crew on 10man.

4manning 25man with a leech in a turret would be difficult, but again it depends how geared the other demo team is.

If your talking about actually driving yourself then dont, let anyone else who isn't a mule do it. but full 213 epics would probably be enough assuming your other demo team is geared well.

Those of you doing DK tanking, how many are using Frost for heroics? I've had a couple of recommendations for DW Frost tanking, but I'm skeptical on it. Otherwise I'm just going to stick to blood and tough it out till I get enough badges/drops to make heroics a breeze.

For anyone interested, I logged back in from 3.1 with -10% avoidance and -7k Health, but here's my gear as it stands. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-s...ldt&n=Allerion

I bet that gear was the shit back in the day <_<. I like blood for singetarget tanking since shit doesn't last long enough in heroics to matter. As far is dual wield tanking... I dunno, it just don't seem as good as 2h since DWing leads to more parryhasting.

See, I know if I expertise cap, I can avoid the parryhasting, but it just seems retarded to even think about because of the sacrifice in gear. The gear was great back in 3.0/3.1 Pretty much the only way it could get better was with a better MH and upgrades to 25m peices. I breezed through what little of Uld-10 I did, and 25 and 10 naxx was just lolworthy. Sitting on nearly 40k health raid buffed was fun, and then popping Vampiric Blood for enrage/incoming damage was just amusing. I just didn't get to do much content because most of the people on my server were terrible, and I couldn't pug anyone worth a damn.

Im using frost for heroics/trash and blood for raid-bosses. The reason why Im using frost is cause Im extremely lazy so all I do is run in and use Howling Blast and Blood Boil, nothing more (Obliterate if I have solid aoe-aggro and want some Rime-procs)

Regarding Flame Leviathan, it has been solo'd and duo'd (I'd have to check but I'd bet it was the 10-man version). There should be no problem for a PUG to have a carry or two, which is what I've experienced with every weekly raid I've done thus far. I suppose your mileage may vary depending on how large your server is.
