I have a question regarding mage and hit rating. Right now my mage is capped on hit for arcane spells (11%+6%) using a combination of triumph gear and 4 pc t9. Now I'm looking into getting Merlin's Robe for a dps boost but in the proces I lose a lot of +hit. Without gemming for hit (which from what I've been told is kind of a big no-no) or breaking 4pc t9 I can rearrange my gear so that I will be 25 hit rating under the cap for arcane spells. How bad is it to be that far below the hit cap? This is assuming I don't get Misery or Improved FF.
I could also change a +28 SP to a +20 hit enchant or a couple of +haste/sp gems to +hit/sp gems. I'm not sure about the last though, especially since the price tag on that is a little bigger. With the former I'll still be 5 hit rating below the hit cap.
It's not that bad, but why would gemming for hit ever be a big no no if uncapped? If the bonus gained > bonus gained from alternatives, it's a better choice. Generally, you won't be faulted for being far enough under hit cap that IFF or misery would fix it, but having two sets for both instances is good if you can get it.
For 25 under hit cap pre IFF/misery, don't worry about it that much
Edit before people rage: Yes, I know gemming for hit cap is bad for some classes, at least to my knowledge DKs, str will outweigh hit point for point, I'm sure there are other classes where this is true, but that's why I added in the point about if the gained attributes outdo the other ones
25 below cap shouldn't be bad a few RNG misses on a couple of spells over the course of the raid, but not a big deal. Remember, most raids you'll be in you'll need 8% hit rather than 11 because of Spriest/Lazer turkey. Also drop 1% more for alliance.
Also, never gem/chant hit ever as a mage. Too easy to get it elsewhere, and if you're that worried about it, pick up hit food.
If I'd use hit food over SP food I'd trade in 48(?) sp for 40 hit of which 15 hit would be basicly wasted. Although I might use hit food and switch out my 245 hit wand for my 219 haste wand. I could run things through Rawr and make a couple of sets for different situations. I'd like to be more then "just another mage" since I'm also trying to apply for a raiding guild.
Obviously not for his situation, if he wants to waste itemization points sure it is, but if he has the gold and doesn't like being under cap, I'd bet a good amount that it's a higher EP gain to gem closer to hit cap.
Rawr is a good idea though, to see if you can tweak to get cap/closer to cap without losing too many other stats
The reason one avoids gemming for Hit (or, god forbid, enchanting for Hit unless you're a tank throwing something on your weapon) is simply that the budget for it tends to be considered undervalued to gearing for it. I've never really bought the argument, though. For a Shadow Priest, and I'd assume for most any other caster, Hit is about 2x as valuable as Spellpower until you're capped, which would put a Rigid stone well ahead of a Runed one. When I was T9 gear, I ended up relying on Engraved Gargoyle's Femur ('cause it's still a healthy chunk of Spellpower) to cover most of my Hit needs. Lately, it feels a lot like the problem that Rogue has been running into, though: all the Hit seems to have disappeared. I spent hours debating between Death Frost Boots for the long run or Sandals of Consecration and coping with Hit problems later before going with the latter since they pull double-duty as healing boots.
Either way, if a Rigid stone is going to get you to your cap, I'd use it. I've certainly done it in the past, in addition to using Icewalker over Tuskarr's Vitality as necessary. If you're having to put more than one or two gems towards your Hit cap, then you should probably look at other options (e.g., Hood of the Smoldering Aftermath). Trying to maintain 4pT9 with Merlin's Robe can be a bit of a pain, so you might want to find out what the equivalency number of your set bonus is and determine if it is worth the iLevel upgrade of Merlin's.
Double-posting, but oh well. Do you suppose you could look at my Warrior in my sig and suggest some possibilities for a DPS-oriented kit when I'm in a group that's going to stomp all over Heroics? After having tried to keep pace with some ICC-geared folks, I find myself horribly Rage-starved and desperately using every trick I can think of while taking practically no damage. Of course, my gear is substantially below theirs (about 1000 points in GS, so pretty much a tier and a half), but when I've been running through something laughable like Oculus or Drak'tharon trash, I was thinking I could use a DPS boost rather than all that avoidance. No clue how to gear DPS for Protection Warrior, though. x.x
Here's the thing, if you're going to be squeezing in merlin's robe, at the expense of some hit, your setup being short 25 hit can be remedied by throwing on icewalker if it's not already on. 25 hit is not make or break for a mage, much less any caster DPS. If anything, go pick up the Ashen band of Destruction if you haven't already.
More often than not you're going to be either a little under, or a little over. It's always better to be slightly under than to gem/chant for hit or grossly over the hit cap, as more often than not you can push more DPS from gemming haste/SP and eating the loss of ~20k (1-2 casts) damage on a fight rather than specially tailoring your gear/socket bonuses towards reaching 264 hit.
*any* hit for a mage is a pretty huge deal, a single missed AB is almost 4 seconds of 0 dps, plus a big loss in dps from the slowing of your stack
just got in and going to eat and do some other stuff before I get on WoW, but yeah I'll put together some kind of list for ya when I get a chance
I'm not entirely positive how it works for Warrior, because the gearing is extremely simple for pally-- we triple dip in str. Str is buffed through a direct talent, it also provides our spellpower, and of course AP, plus block value. And then judgements/seals/consecration all factor in both ap and sp.
So for us, it's just str, str, and more str, and crit or expertise along with it. I'm guessing it's basically the same for warrior until you get to an extremely high level of gear and armor pen takes over.
armory's showing my itemrack set labeled "heroic" now
it's not optimal tho, there's a few things I need to change now, way too much hit since I swapped in the t10
also forgot I lost about 100 str switching to 2t10 and my ap is down to 4750 ;;
Is tyrande getting stronger as she dies, because I got her to 95% solo earlier and had to leave because alliance faggot were attacking me.
Gonna try to solo her later today if there is no trick
Ok so, for random today I got CoT, which destroys overall dps from ret aura and maintaining plea, so my overall dps was only about 5k on meters.
Here's stats:
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...ila/hammer.jpg
It's hard to figure too much out from it because there's so many 1 melee swing fights and whatnot.
I'm also in pvp spec, which means glyphs of avenger's shield, judgement, and hammer of justice, no sov, hotr, or holy wrath.
Basically what you can get from it is this:
8k+ average crit from hammer, 4k average non-crit. Roughly 1/3 crit, so each one is basically 2 non-crit and 1 crit.
So each hammer is about 16k damage, before factoring in seal procs (should have been using righteousness here cuz no expertise glyph but meh).
2 hammers in the first 6 seconds of the fight, with most fights ending right after the 2nd. 4k+ dps from hammer alone, which constitutes about 1/3 of my dps in a good run.
And I'll still post ya a good overall one when I get a good one heh.
Anybody know what the fuck happened to TourGuide?

In the end I decided to enchant my gloves with +20 Hit rating instead of +28 SP. I end up with 284 Hit rating before buffs so I'm lacking 5 Hit rating to cap arcane spells. If I would gem for Hit now then 50% of it would be wasted for arcane spells. Having 0.17% chance to miss is only once in 588ish casts (unless my math is wrong), so for the moment it should be ok to use.
There are still some Hit rating options available outside raids that I could go for to be a little more versatile in my gear sets. Most notably there drops a cape in ToC HC with +hit/+crit which I could use to be 19 Hit rating over cap without using the +20 Hit rating enchantment (so I basicly gain +28 SP from it). No idea how I managed to miss that one in my earlier "builds".
I'm becoming a lot more confident that my gear is acceptable for raid standards. I don't quite get 5k gearscore without "cheating" my way into it but the last PuG raid I did (VoA10) I was at least in the top2 DPS for every boss and most of the people had "better" gear then me.
I've got only 4965 GS and I normally pull 8-9k on everything in VoA25 cept toravaon, because I do my job as ranged (Which I wont have to do this week lolol.)
Tbh, I see plenty of mages over 5k GS that can't DPS worth a damn. Hell, I was in an instance with 3 DPS over 5k GS, and I out DPS'd them in my 4.4k GS tank. It was lulzworthy.
Is there a way to force WoW into a specific screen res?
Because of mouse incident I resized my game window to something like 1280x200. Got back to Video option but it seems I can't make it back to 1280x768; I'm sure I was using that because all of my past screenshots are that size (and not, say 1280x700).
Tried to browse the WTF folder but didnt find anything. Any hint appreciated.
find
SET gxResolution "#x#"
in Config.wtf in your wtf folder, should do it, if you're searching for it on notepad just go through the whole thing if the find function doesn't work, it tends to be tempermental (for me anyway)
Has anyone else had a problem with alt tabbing since around 3.3? I used to be able to hop on my flying mount, set a direction to auto fly, and then alt tab for a few mins while I fly there. Nowadays, if I alt tab out it's like my WoW becomes 'frozen' and I will dc if I don't alt tab back within a minute. When I alt tab out, instead of continuing to fly there it's like my character gets frozen in place.
To clarify this though, I can alt tab in town for however long and it's fine and I won't dc. I can also take actual flight paths and alt tab without any issues. But I can't use my flying mount or do something like scan the AH with auctioneer while the game is minimized.
Final note, I'm aware I could just play the game in windowed mode with it set to full screen, but I've heard this drops your performance a bit which is something I don't want to do. Any ideas?
