Thanks for all the help getting started. I just started with the trial version yesterday and it was pretty painless to get going.

The main thing I am in love with that I was not prepared for was that you can actually run through other people without getting stuck on them like in FFXI. Very nice. A few questions now that I am getting in the swing of things.....


1) Is there a windowed mode? I can alt/tab out without it crashing but on my 1940's computer it takes a while to switch back.

2) Apparently trial accounts can't use the 'buy it now' feature at the auction house. What are my options for getting weapons/armor that aren't level 1?

3) Is there a list somewhere that lists armor/weapons by level? Seems like there are 999999 sites for WOW and it's tough not knowing where to look.

4) Is there a ffxiah.com equivalent for WoW?

5) Any good pre-20 guides? So far I've just been doing every quest I can find but it seems like its getting slow compared to what I expected.

6) Do trial characters transfer when you get the full game? What I've done is just a drop in the bucket but I don't want to start over if I don't have to.

7) I just picked the server listed at the top. I guess it doesn't matter other than PvP preferences?

Go to the video settings, there will be a windowed option to check.

Quests will often reward gear, for the most part you can gear up just doing the quests you level with. You'll also obtain gear running instances.

Blizzard actually launched a remote AH program that you can check and purchase from the AH with...but it's not free. Otherwise I don't believe there's an option.

It slows down a tad every so often, or rather the first few levels are really, really fast. Your best bet for a guide is to say what your class is, what you want to do with it and have us tell you what to do.

Pretty sure you can, but I'm not 100%.

It matters a lot...if you plan to do end-game seriously. If not, it makes no difference really. We'd need to know faction to be able to recommend a particular server, though.

Quests unfortunately, there are some vendors but they don't sell anything but white gear too low, which while better than level 1 gear, might not be what you mean

Wowhead has an option under the loot list when you search, but most armor is uncommon drops that have random stats, the rest come from quests, you can specify it to only look at quest reward items from your faction if you need that

No, there isn't an inherent AH history in WoW, but the addon Auctioneer will remember how many times you've seen an item and give you prices.

I've been looking around for Addons that would be able to tell me when certian buffs are applied to me from melee/abilitys (Killing Machine, Rime, HoW, ect,ect) but I've been unable to find Addons that work properly, the closest I got to finding what I wanted was Tell Me When but it never picked up the buffs, after multiple attempts of trying to get it to work just finally gave up on it.

You're using the wrong proc names I bet, for instance Rime procs have to be tracked by following the buff 'Freezing Fog'

Research the procs you're trying to track and tellmewhen does just fine, as does powerauras.

1) If you're crashing now, go check if your pc can handle dalaran. While the game is still playable without going to the big town, it's a real pain in the ass.

You can play in a fullscreen windowed mode (option in the video section I believe), and you should have no issue alt tabbing with this on.


2) Essentially, all your gears will be quested/dropped in instance. You shouldn't have to buy any gears, unless its your 2nd toon and you have lot of money to waste. Most quest hubs usually have a weapons reward, so you will come accross better gears eventually

The AH is still nice to make money (crafting ingredient usually), but the gears on it is overpriced.


3) Don't worry about getting the best pieces of equipments for your level, just play the games and good gears will come to you. You will get upgrade so often it's nearly pointless to aim for a particular one.

If you have any specific question, asking them here is probably the easiest way early. wowhead.com is the website I use.


4) You don't want to spend money on the AH otw to 80, because unlocking mounts, dual spec and leveling a craft will probably cost you a lot. Buy what you need if you feel it's not overpriced, but you really don't need much (personally, the only thing I bought was larger bags on AH and some crafting mats). Is there an history? No , but you really don't need one.

You have 3 alternative to xp.
-Questing: just grind quest that are soloable, but not too low
-battleground: At level 20 and above, you can join battleground to get xp.
-dungeon finder: send you to a dungeon with a bunch of people. you get nice loot and xp from this


6) Yes. It took 3 days game before my character become active, but you will keep it no problem


7) Recommended server are smaller usually. It might be a harder to find raid at 80 if you want to play seriously. You usually want to aim for a server that has a lot of people (and no queue)

Professor P. as the abomination I basically wiped the group because I just could not keep up with the slime pools, I just about mashed the button to eat and of course also slowed the green or orange slime, despite that there was loads of green crap on the floor. Wondering if its my latency or I'm doing something wrong :/

Once you fall behind you pretty much cannot keep up. So you need to make sure you're on it, pools are the #1 responsibility. The snare for the ooze is a ranged attack, so you don't need to stop eating the ooze to snare them.

You probably let one grow for a little too long, or didn't eat one completely. That's what happened on my first attempt. One spawned under the table, i didn't see it asap and fell behind.

Essentially, you want to go on top of the slime as soon it spawn, eat it asap, then move to the 2nd one. It's your number one priority.


Like Eaglestrike said, the "slow" move (#2) is very large and you don't have to stop eating to go to the slime. If you happen to be near putricide or an ooze, spam 1 and 3 to dps and debuff putricide/ooze while eating.

I had issues with this, seems like everytime I turned my camera I stopped eating the ooze. Just stand in the middle of the pool and spam away, look up/target/move towards orange or green slime to slow it (30 yard range). Also make sure you completely eat the puddle or it'll grow back quickly. Really easy once you get the hang of it.

Because everything else was well answered I'll slap in my two cents for these two because I had the same kinda trouble when I first started out.

5 - Not really that I could find, I looked around wowwiki and couldn't find anything, just do quests, and when you run out of quests start killing everything around you, it may get a little boring, but aim for green/yellow mobs, they will bring you the fastest EXP/hr ratio when your stuck without quests, I don't know if Trial Version get access to it, but the Random Dungeon Finder gets access at Lv.15 I believe, which brings in great EXP/HR as well as some half-way decent gear, as well as get you some more clink-clink. :D

6 - Yes, Trial Accounts transfer to the Full Game, meaning that you will not lose any of the progress that you had earned on your character, my original druid was on Trial Account before I had gotten the full game, and I was quiet happy that I didn't have to start from scratch.

Nah I could eat the puddles while running (they would definitely shrink when I would), you just don't show the 'eat' animation. We also have tanks stand PP pretty close to the puddles when possible so I can beat on his ass while eating, and that includes kind of going in a circle to avoid gas bombs. Never had any problems.

Three common problems from people who have asked me how the heck I do it (I have a clean floor constantly and even usually have time to dps ooze on every pop): 1) Not standing at the pool's epicenter to eat it (it causes issues), 2) Not actually spamming the eat key; only pressing it when you see the animation finish, and 3) Not moving until the pools are down.

Your priorities are, in absolute order, to eat slime, slow ooze, dps ooze, dps boss. If there is slime down, you must be on top of it. Slowing ooze is also a #1 kind of thing, but less so, and is easy to simply step into range and step back (you can cover about 3/4 of the room with your vomit attack, just make sure you learn the time it takes to reach target so you can time it to avoid a surprise rush on someone).

It takes three ticks of a pool to move from one end of the room to the other, and if you're unlucky with who gets pool targeted, this is a very possible situation. Three ticks on two pools is a lot, because it means 6-9 ticks on the second pool by the time you eat the first one.

The ooze puddles are spawned by vials that PP throws, watch dbm so you know when they're due and then watch where they go! This gives you about a 3 second head start on the puddles, and you can be in position pretty much right when they show up (or at least, when they're 'edible', as right when they spawn they are not, it takes the game logic a moment to process that).

A minor thing that might help also is to download SnowfallKeyPress, which causes your action bars to trigger on button press instead of button release. Makes little difference in a spamming situation, but it might help you in other ways too.

Worry about getting your slime cleanup executed well first, but once you do start paying attention to oozes. Note how long it takes them to spawn from the unstable experiment, how long it takes them to actually acquire a target and start moving, and as I said how long it takes your vomit to reach them at max distance. Once you get the timing down, you'll be able to always have a slowed slime as soon as it starts moving (and not before; some people would argue that doing it as soon as it's targetable is preferable since it puts a heavy dot on the ooze, but the dot pales to what your dps players can do to it, and losing 4 seconds of slowed time might be the difference between an exploding gas cloud and a dead one).

Edit: You also don't have to eat a pool until it's completely vanished, there's a small 'tick' at the end where it is still shrinking and will disappear on its own without your intervention. It's good for a small chunk of slime energy though so eating until the pool is totally gone is often preferable (and once you get it down pat, you'll have time to do it anyway! :D)

Edit2: I don't know what class you play, but wear a 2h while you're in the abom, you'll do a lot more damage with his attack (once you get to the point that you can start dpsing things anyhow, lol )

Thanks again for the second volley of help. One last question before I put my nose to the grindstone and start powering out some progress.....

I hear a lot of people talking about "10 level 80's" and such. Are multiple jobs a neccessity like they are in FF? After toying around I'll probably stick with a hume cleric (although I'm really bummed they can't use shields like the old style clerics in D&D). Can I just level that and be ok? Or are there circumstances or guilds that will demand other jobs?

Each toon is unique and separate from all your others, so it's not quite like XI in that you don't have the same toon doing everything, but it's possible that depending on the circles you run with you may find yourself sitting out of a raid because they have too many <insert class here> already, and really need a <insert other class>; in this situation, obviously you'd still get to go if you had the other toon, AND it was geared.

That said, no, you don't have to get multiple toons since there's usually enough breathing room to bring anything available. Especially as a priest, since you can dps or heal (with appropriate talent specs and armor, of course).
