Sockets just let you customize your stats a bit, nothing really special about em. While leveling up it's not something to concern yourself over, what I usually did with socketed stuff before I hit max level was just find a logically budgeted green quality gem that matched the socket colors (unless the socket bonus was something stupid like resilience, in which case I usually put in an offensive gem even if it didn't match colors). Should only cost you a gold or two and gives a nice little boost to your stats.

Use your gems to fill in the gaps in your gear. For my warrior, gems get used to make up any Hit that I'm missing to get to the soft cap, then it's all +Str/Atk or +Crit from there. Once you get to 80 and start doing lots of daily quests, spending 50G for a blue gem isn't that bad. You'll earn that much anyway doing the required Sons of Hodir dailies anyway.

Are you leveling to 80 without touching Storm Peaks or Icecrown? If so, you're doing it wrong. You need to do a series of quests to unlock the Argent Crusade/Knights of the Ebon Blade/Sons of Hodir quartermasters and get lots of rep with those 3 while doing so. Best to just do them on the way to 80 since you'll have to do them once you are 80 anyway.

I'm just following Zygor's Guide using an addon. It hasn't directed me to Icecrown or Stormpeaks at all. I don't think it's terrible it just means I will do them at 80 instead of 78 or 79. Where can I read about the quests there that I need to do specifically? If it's so important I'm sure someone has detailed what is so important about it in a thread somewhere?

You'll want to rep up these factions for the BiS enchants they sell. (They also sell various pre-raid/pre-heroic BiS gear that you may want to use while gearing up)

Storm Peaks / Sons of Hodir: Starts in K3 with "They took our men!", quest line is like 30 steps long and ends with you hitting friendly with Sons of Hodir.

Ebon Blade: Starts on the faction airship, which sends you to the Ebon Hold in Icecrown. QM available after you do about 5 quests there.

Argent Crusade: Starts in the southeast Argent Crusade camp, though I thought the QM was available from the start?

He is unlocked from the start, but if you don't do any quests from Zul'Drak you'll be what...friendly tops? I guess some folks like grinding out their rep in dungeons :D

The pre-raid gear isn't a big deal with how easy current raid content is, but you'll want to get revered with argent crusade/ebon blade for the tanking and dps head enchants, and exalted with sons of hodir for the shoulder enchants(unless you're an inscriber, which have far better shoulder enchants).

Okay, the way the response was though it made it seem like I was SOL if I didn't do these while leveling up. My last quest in my guide was turning in 2 things to Thormir some Viking guy in the Sons of Hodir I assume because I got a fuckton (like 50k) rep from 2 turn ins. My game crashed on the 2nd turn in so I decided to come here and check the thread before I logged back in.

Anyway, I'm 80 and I'll definitely start the quests I need to do for rep now since I am done leveling and can focus on rep/gearing myself for heroics.

This. I got to 80 before I even finished Dragonblight and am already raking in the coinage just following the 'leveling path'.

Seems pretty high, I made about 5k on quest reward gold doing about 3/4ths of Sholazar, all of storm peaks and icecrown. Toss in maybe another 1500 on vendorable equipment from quests.

May have been if you don't go past Grizzly Hills, I just remember hearing just the other day someone say they'd calculated it out to being 15k gold if you still had storm peaks, icecrown, and 1 or 2 more.

I personally am halfway through grizzly hills, now that my guild is clearing everything in 1-2 days I'll get a chance to mess with it, I'll have to keep track of how much I end up with.

My warlock had ~1.8k gold when she dinged 80 with roughly 30 quests to go in zul'drak.

With sholazar quests now fully cleared and ~70 done in storm peaks she's sitting on top of 4.4k. I fully expect 6-7k by the time icecrown is done. 15k seems like you're doing 25 dailies on top of the 'levelling' quests. I'd only manage 15k on a toon who was disenchanting every quest reward and selling the dust/essence/shards.

Can I go onto the PTR, create a bunch of gear, respec, and screw around for a bit? I don't feel like using 12 titansteel bars just to see what I'd do as a ret paladin.

If I'm understanding the question correctly, the PTR works exactly the same as normal realms, it's just there for a limited time and it has the next patch applied to it. Everything like crafting, respeccing, etc is the same. Gear acquisition is the same as well, with the exception of when they have premade characters or in very rare situations (right now there are no premades nor NPCs giving out gear).

A lot of people put a ton of crap (crafting mats, money, etc) on one character and copy it over, sometimes several times, and use that stuff to make or buy whatever they want on the PTR, and they can sell it back on live so there is no real loss.

My druid is 70, and I really don't feel like leveling his herbalism yet I just want to push 80 before 3.1

Is there enough money pre-80 in questing+greens+DEing BOE's on another char to get an epic flyer+cold weather by 77? If not whatever I guess the last 3 levels wont be TOO bad without the flyer. /cry

And how are you guys having that many zones left before hitting 80? I had most of storm peaks done on my main before I dinged 80. Are you doing Borean>Howling>Blight>Zul>Basin?

I did borean > howling > dragonblight and was like 200k from 80 so I went and did some shit in Basin. Now that I'm going back through for money I'm starting at Grizzly.

Most quest guides go borean > howling > dragonblight > grizzly > zd > basin > sp > icecrown I believe.

well I did howling>grizzly>zul and hit 77 so if i really wanted to i could stay in zul and grind. Something of note is i dont do much instance. Thats no fun so Im flying around at 77 in Icecrown mining and doin lv 80 quest by the vault and fleshwerks.

where exactly do 'spec' and 'proc' come from?, most people know the terms and their usage but to be honest i've had trouble defining proc to some friends who don't play MMOs before. I also realized (while trying to go to sleep about an hour ago) I don't actually know what spec stands for, I could just be tired on that one though.
