Hmmm so I read that post Cataclysm, that the community has been pretty newb-unfriendly, what are your guys' experience? I'm casual to the point of possibly only doing a couple hours on the weekends, and I'm comfortable with the idea of leveling only to 80-85 once or twice and doing only 5-10 mans only (i.e. heavy raiding and most of the grinding wouldn't apply to me). Think I could still have fun largely using the dugeon-finder to groups?

EDIT: I remember now, I think it was Aion that did the auto-run, so I was probably just confused. Thanks for clearing that up, though!

The commitment required to perform well in raid is minimal. On my hunter, I was able to outdps everyone within 24 hours of hitting 85 (I did buy 2 pieces for 10k, and had a bit of luck on my trash run). In 5 man, it's not even a question. Anyone who can read should be able to outperform 90% of the playerbase in any situation even with shitty gears.


The game itself is very newb-friendly, but the playerbase is like anything online: lot of kids who rage at the stupidest thing, but also some cool people once in a while. If you have some common sense, read about your class online, and check the encounter beforehand (youtube or w/e), you will never have any issue. If you're underperforming...probably not.


As for "having fun with 5 man", it depend of you. Personally, the only enjoyment I get from this game is from progress run where I can push myself, and dungeon are not enough for this. However, if you have little time, 5 hours a week is more than enough to make significant progress and see a lot of the content (including raid content)

I believe you can have fun.

Don't forget old raids too where you can basically just eat all the damage so you'll still experience content. People will be doing those old raids for gear so they can modify gear to look like them.

So you can go to those with no pressure, at all, and still see stuff.

Plus, RAID Finder is going to be out. Where you can basically go in, have a laugh at all the rage, and still kill Deathwing (25 man but it'll be tuned for 10 co-ordinated people, I'm sure!)

And don't forget PvP.

I was in a very good guild a year or two ago, but the problem was still that it was difficult to find people to do dungeons (that I could do) when I was available, especially with my erratic schedule. I only had 1 character, so the range of available content was pretty narrow. That's why the dungeon finder was so appealing to me, at least theoretically. I played FFXI for many years, and WoW for a total of maybe 6 months (on and off over 4 years), so I'm aware of the playerbase to a large extent. So I was basically playing as if the game were single player, and needless to say, that got old pretty fast.

If I can find a nice guild, that would of course be the best scenario, but I know those are hard to come by.

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate all the info I can get before diving in again. I'm currently on a free starter account just to mess around before deciding to reactivate my old account (77 DK, 55 Hunter, 53 Warlock).

If you just plan to play a couple of months, there is definitively a lot of fun thing to do (especially if you like seeing everything the game has to offer). If you plan to play for a long period of time however, grinding 5 man or old dungeon get old fast enough

Since the nerf, you could probably tank just fine if you know what to do, but filling these slot is pretty easy.


378 bracers at 2-3k golds
359 feet for 300g?
Grab any upgrade on the AH
Pants/hands/body are easily farmable with justice, or just run 1 or 2 older raid, you will probably get a bunch of upgrade.

Idk, i would spend 3-4 more hours gearing yourself out of respect for the group, even if it's possible to do it.

I wish they were that cheap on my server. They are still 6500+ on average depending. Although I can afford them, I'm too cheap to buy stuff in WoW where the gear can be replaced in the next second.

Except that's all gold can buy in WoW? Vanity crap, or gear that helps you progress. There's not really anything worth saving up for...

WoW economy is in perpetual inflation, hoarding money beyond an expansion is just as good as throwing it away.

The only other thing you can buy are mounts that cost around 100k-200k gold (doesn't take long to get pet out of the way), and gears only cost a fraction of that.

If you're seriously trying to gears a character, it's generally a good investment to buy gears upgrade, especially when it will help you through the next tier for a few week. I'm not saying to toss your money on the first 30k items you see if you can get an upgrade in 2 weeks, you can usually get better deal.

The valor bracers are going to last you a long time since their replacement will require the correct combo of random stats when Alysrazor decides to drop them for you.

What is the soft cap on dodge/parry that I should reach before reforging everything else into mastery?

I thought it was around 17%.... but now i'm being told its around 12.36%. In which I should reach that "soft cap" then reforge everything extra into mastery.

So........ which one is it? If its around 12%, then I got alot of reforging to do lol

It's the other way around, you want to cap mastery, then focus on dodge and parry. Ultimately, your goal is to mitigate as many attack as you can, and because mastery scale much faster than parry/dodge, it's preferable to just stack it until you reach the block cap. After that, any mastery that bring you above the cap should be converted into parry or odge

To mitigate every attack, you need
dodge%+parry%+block%+5% > 102.4%

Sure, it's pimp and maybe beyond our reach (I'm personally 92% avoidance unbuffed) but copy how he gems/enchants and it works quite great!

To mitigate every attack, you need
dodge%+parry%+block% > 102.4%

Actually it's dodge+parry+block+miss = 102.4
Miss is a static 5%, so dodge+parry+block = 97.4
You also do not want > at all, you want it equal, or as little past as possible. Any mastery past this point does -nothing- for you, so once you break 102.4, you should either gem more stam, reforge into avoidance, or reforge into hit/exp. Do realize that stam gives more AP than str does also, so it's a pretty solid offensive stat, as well as having some defensive value.

And yes, you don't want that above 102.4%. I suppose my wording was confusing, but I used ">" since the statement I wrote is true for anything equals or above 102.4%, even if it's wasted.
