All MMOs are like that. If you can't find your own fun in the game then it's time to quit and/or take a break. That's as true for WoW as it ever was for FFXI and ever will be for future MMOs.
Recently I've found the fun in pet battles. It's pretty good! I'm a little over 100 PVP wins now. I'm also leveling a new character on another server. And pushing to make cash gold money for no particular reason. It's all about finding your fun.
I have been treating WoW like a solo game for about two years now. I have no guild to speak of (except the guild I created for myself and my alts, it's level 10 now I think and I enjoy the perks), and no obligations. I log in when I have the time, dick around with PvP, pet battles, farming old raids, or leveling alts and I don't have to worry about other people's schedules cockblocking my progression.
I think is, while I enjoy seeing what raid bosses come, I'm bored with the loot options. Aside from set bonuses there's pretty much nothing surprising anymore and everything is so predictable I'm bored with the cookie cutter setup of:
gem all str/int/agi
gem hybrid
enchant this/that
If they threw a bit of disparity spanner into that and make it a meta-game that would be interesting, i.e. choices that make you feel torn somewhat (gear that absorbs X element damage, but take 12% more damage, etc etc etc etc), I think I would enjoy end-game gearing up more. Otherwise it sort of feels like "bahhh gotta do it all over again" and tick through the boxes. The ultimate goal is to make stuff somewhat impossible to math out, only a theory on the perfect setup (possible BiS)
Supbrah, haven't seen you in a while. I agree with what you said there. Nothing's a challenge to figure out, the moment you hit 90 you already know what stats to go with. I sort of miss FFXI's augmentation system. A little. It was shitty and could completely ruin an item of value, but then again, it gave you something to do while solo and could potentially enhance an already good piece of equipment.
@Boyiee
I'd log in months ago, get on mumble and we'd all find something fun to do for shits and giggles.
Yeah I don't even raid now. me and a friend rerolled new server and faction and just pvp. still fun for us.
Funny how this thread got spawned a week or 2 after I posted the above: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/116...s-situational/
It's a very interesting read in regards to gear and class system. Of course, I understand FF14 is still new and not going to mature for a while, but in terms of design vs player's preferences I enjoyed the read.
This reminds me of when back in the lich king era, before the cata-patch, when we had what, 51 talent points to burn? Something like that, but basically it allowed for quite some customisability at the expense of being horribly inefficient. Does anyone miss this? For shits and giggles, it was fun to customise your char with certain abilities/features. i.e. I remember I was tanking on DK with a ghoul pet full time. I enjoyed playing with the online talent calculators at work to try and work out an unique and situational build. Now it's just "THIS, +6 CHOICES THIS, GO FULL STR AND HASTE" etc. In a way it's good that it's simple, as it means you can get stuck into the game quicker, but quickly becomes dull and just "meh"
Finding a happy medium seems to be the goal. Blizzard did seem to try, and have done moderately well but at the same time, due to player culture, everything was somewhat quickly mathed out and a lot of people said they don't feel like they have a lot of choice with the new system. From last week's updates, the glyphs seem rather interesting recently.
@ that thread: meanwhile in WoW tanks are begging for the removal of tank stats because it's way the fuck more fun to be a tank based on abilities than passively avoiding a hit x% of the time
players don't know what the fuck they want except for one big thing: balance
as long as the only thing we can agree on is that everybody wants balance, big money mmo's aren't going to be throwing gear with "makes bubble last only 3 seconds but reflect all damage avoided" around on any kind of regular basis
the big problem with the new system is basically this:
Almost all of the actual choices are made automatically when you pick your spec. Because the talent options are all available to all 3 specs, it's everything in extreme moderation.
"Oh sweet, DK got aoe stun back! Oh, it has 6 second ramp up and is extremely easily dispelled and even more easily avoided. Awesome..."
"Oh sweet, all 3 specs can get chillbains now! Oh, if you take chillbains you get absolutely no mobility whatsoever, awesome. There's also a 3rd choice on that tier but I play my dk 20+ hours a week and can't remember right now what the fuck it is."
Bolded part is the only part that has any relevance. The only customization you could do was how bad did you really want to be? It was the same shit when they scrapped the awful talent system from D3. The illusion of choice is just as bad as no choice. I question my talents now moreso than I ever did when we had full on talent trees. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's better now than it was. As for gear and itemization, I don't mind it the way it is now, every stat on your gear is useful to some degree(unless you're wearing dodge/parry and DPSing, but again inefficiency). Sure they could probably clean stuff up, but the reforge system does a great job in letting you take some pieces that would generally be less than optimal, and suddenly they're far better than they were.
Biggest problem I have right now with WoW's gearing is the conscious decision they made to put too much hit on the more common drops to make the endboss/zone drop weapons more valuable.
Excess hit in general is a problem now but it doesn't piss me off the same way as abusing it to make certain gear better than other because one of the stats is 100% worthless.
(I finally got rid of my hit weap and I'm still stuck almost 3% over cap until I get animus helm + tier shoulders + ANY FUCKING BOOTS GOD DAMN IT)
Yeah, I was way over the hit cap for a bit as well, but some gear upgrades have let me drop down to only slightly over! I really liked the system Rift used for hit cap, in that each new tier of content required a new cap to reach. With increases in item levels, I think that would probably be the best solution to it, if less than elegant.
The very least they could do is some shit like make it so that any hit over cap is split evenly between haste/crit/mastery. Unfortunately they wanted people to be over hit cap this tier so that we'd still want the non-existent 1% weaps and keep spending weeks coming back to get that perfect htf offpiece that doesn't have hit to replace the tier piece that does.
Sure WoW is becoming more and more like it's going the F2P method but not just quite, but seeing these items in their cash shop, I really had the urge to reactivate and buy the items when it comes out lol:

Any thoughts/opinions/rage? lol
^ I expressed my laughter in the complaint thread. Soon they'll be selling enchanting materials in the cash shop as well!
doesn't bother me any, and I think they all look like shit and don't match with much of anything anyway lol
I am irritated that they're still just selling exp boost (hope people didn't think raf and shit were anything else lol) instead of just nerfing the exp or letting us reroll at 80 or 85 or whatever, but meh, business gonna business.
selling exp is a bit of a step down that slippery slope though, but it's not like it's a new one since you've been able to buy exp with raf for years now
I mean I wouldn't complain if it was like "pay $20 for a new max or near-max level character," but you know they're considering like straight up "$100 for a level 90 with 463 blues" and shit at this point.
Yeah, I get that RAF was basically buying an exp boot, shit I did it 3 times. Don't think they intended it that way, though they had to know it would happen. I don't see the exp potion, or aesthetic items as anything remotely threatening or somehow a logical leap to selling characters, enchanting materials or whatever else. It's just a silly argument to see "OMG THEY'RE ADDING AESTHETIC STUFF ACTIBLI$$ARD STRIKES AGAIN." Pets, mounts, exp boosts, whatever. If they start adding stuff that actually has a tangible impact on gameplay, then you can start complaining. Not that you were specifically, but you know what I'm saying.
Edit: Has there even been any word on the exp potion other than it was being targeted for the Eastern(China, Korea, etc) regions where the model is already drastically different than what we have in the Americas and Europe? As far as I know, the exp potion isn't even coming here.
Not seen a word myself, although I've not played for some time now, I have kept up to date with patch notes and changes.
I believe there's not been an EXP cut for 85-90? If that 300% potion came here, I would happily buy 1 depending on the usage method (do we get a stack? or per use per hour? etc). That'll allow me to accelerate to 90 via dungeons and minimal quests so I can actually pay an alt or 2. I don't want to quest, lol. But the same 2-3 dungeons gets boring fast but if EXP growth is accelerated then I can bear it.
I thought they looked quite cool, those hats. But of course it's subjective to people's tastes.
Thinking about it, the challenge dungeon set, assuming I complete gold and unlock a set for my DK, does it carry over cross-char on same account? (assuming because it's an achievement)
