Is a 400 ms latency about normal for everyone else? It seems like I should have a lower latency for my computer. I live in the NW and my particular battlegroup is based in the NW as well, so I doubt distance is the cause. Effects are pretty standard, textures are on high, but ground clutter and weather are on low settings. According to the site "Can i run it?" this computer can handle games like Crysis at full settings, so I wouldn't think WoW would tax it so much.
Does everyone else get the same latency? Seems like my little computer icon on the game toolbar should be green, not yellow all the time like it is now.
Wow has been giving me latency fits this week so I've been seeing much the same (pissed me off last night though, I was getting like 1-4k ms in Uld -.-), but typically see 100-200 at most...do you always seem to have 400+ or is that recent?
Recent day or 2 I've been getting "lag bursts" but its the server (many others in the raid complained about it, and or even see 1/4th the raid d/c)
According to my titan panel/wow interface though my latency is about min 12-32MS highest, 18-22 average
Im in texas my server is in New York 206.16.235.67 (Magtheridon)
You may want to tracert your server to see if your getting major packetloss or something somewhere.

400 is common for me. Pretty much far as i can remember. It doesn't seem to be affecting me too harshly, but by what you guys are telling me I shouldn't be experiencing this.Wow has been giving me latency fits this week so I've been seeing much the same (pissed me off last night though, I was getting like 1-4k ms in Uld -.-), but typically see 100-200 at most...do you always seem to have 400+ or is that recent?
@gulk thanks for the info, i'm really bad at this kind of thing, so i may need more help if I can't figure this out
Edit: gulk, azuremyst isnt even on that list... that must be bad lol.
From networldmap you posted:
e are currently unable to locate the address 10.10.10.10 at this time.
azuremyst = 206.16.147.49
US realm list by datacenter - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft
this is maybe a better list
my tracert is averaging 50ms to that, not too bad O_o
Alright, this is my results from tracert, if you dont mind browsing over it and tellin me what to do next. I really do appreciate the help
spoilered for lot o' info
Spoiler: show
According to wowwiki, Azuremyst is 206.16.147.49
Your trace is going to 24.20.222.224?
yeah i c and p the azuremyst 206.16.147.49, hit the closest location that actually works and hit trace, and that's what came up. I'm using the CA stanford SLAC option, because vancouver, WA brings up a not found error.
I guess I'm still confused, when you type 'tracert 206.16.147.49' in a command prompt, it should say that's where it's tracing to. Not some weird alternate address.
Edit: Oh are you using some other website that has trace functions? Do it from your wow pc. Start -> Run, type 'cmd', OK, type 'tracert 206.16.147.49', press enter.
yeah i was, thanks for showing me that. running it now.
ok, results from my computer. boy this is greek to me haha.

my route.
Well you're reaching the datacenter (12.130.0.174) with your highest ping being in the 200ms range, so that would be what I would expect your latency to hover at, with dips going lower.
Using other trace tools on the net is giving me similar results from other places around the country, seems a few of those AT&T hubs are a bit busier than others.
You could try bypassing your firewalls (software and/or hardware) for a session and see if your router is giving you issues. You could also QoS traffic on your router to Azuremyst's IP to be higher priority but I guarantee this will mess with vent communications if you use them, so exercise caution.
Edit: us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com is just their authentication server, which would logically be located in Irving, CA, since that's where they're HQed, so it makes sense that you'd have a relatively low ping from Oregon to there. It's basically what you connect to when you hit 'login' to check your username and password; but once beyond that, from the time you see your character list you're connecting to the worldserver, which is at a datacenter in some specific geographical location (in this case, Boston).
Alright, so i'm just stuck with a 200 ping then. I appreciate you looking that over for me.
All things considered 200 is pretty normal for a home user. It's unusual for a high-bandwidth application that connects cross-country to get sub-100.
If I'm in an empty area and nobody is around I can drop down to 50-90ms, in Org/Dal I'm somewhere between 90 and 150, and normally can see up to 200 in 25man raids or wintergrasp, and I don't really notice it; once I start hitting the 500+ range is where clicking a button doesn't give an immediate result and I actually notice "lag".
You have to keep in mind too, that stat in the blizzard UI is only tracking your speed to the server, not the other way around. If blizzard is having issues with something on their outbound connections you can show a low ping and still have severe latency (see also: wintergrasp when there's a fuckton of people), because ICMP traffic (the type of information used for basic latency testing, such as traceroute; it's conceivable that the wow client is doing the same thing) is relatively low impact and easy to slip through to acknowledge your latency test even if there's major congestion otherwise.
What exactly do people mean when they talk about their dps. Are they talking about raid buffed and against a boss, or throughout the entire raid, against a practice dummy thing with no buffs. I haven't done any raids before so all I know about my dps is against the 80 boss level practice dummy thing with no buffs on. What increase should I expect, as a rogue, when buffed so I know if I can compete.
Usually they mean raid buffed against a boss. A stationary boss like patchwerk is a good test of your dps. Target dummy numbers will always be lower than your actual numbers because of party/raid buffs.
generally, i would say 2k dps for heroics, 2.5 for 10 man naxx, 3k for 25 naxx, and 3.5+ for ulduar is a good starting point. Subtract about 2-300 dps from those numbers for a training dummy to know what you can be competitive in.
I don't know about you but my dummy dps is half what I can do with raid buffs ;/
I suppose it can vary by class, but only 200-300 difference without buffs? >.>
