    Looking for a new camera~

Kinda hoping you photographers pop in here (Mioko where you at?!)

Anyway, I'm looking for a new digital camera on newegg. Trying to keep it under $500. If I'm looking on the wrong site, gimme a link to a better one I guess.

These are what I've been looking at so far:

    Newegg.com - Panasonic DMC-LZ8K Black 8.1 MP 2.5" 230K LCD 5X Optical Zoom Digital Camera

Newegg.com - Kodak EasyShare Z1015 IS Black 10 MP 3.0" 230K LCD 15X Optical Zoom 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera

To be quite fuckin' honest I don't know what the fuck I'm looking for except for MP size, shutter delay (pressing the button and the picture being taken as fast as fuckin' possible. To hell with those 2 second delay shitters) and optical zoom.

    Any help would be appreciated.

$500 is a strange price cap. You're putting yourself well above the price of a fantastic point and shoot but are just under the standard entry price range of DSLRs.

Talk to bearofscience, he is hardcore into photography. Look into the Nikkon D40 and D60 cameras, they are really awesome if that helps Kiro.

    Like I said, I dunno wtf I'm doing. :>

And Mizango, Nikkon D60 looks nice. Might have to look into it a bit more. Definitely want to get a camera that'll last me a while though.

Then I would go with the D60 or 40. Durability and plus its Nikon, it's what they do. They take absolutely stunning photos of kids. >.>

    Sorry I couldn't resist

If you're mildly serious about getting into decent photography, check out the Canon Digital Rebel and Canon Digital Rebel XT. Seems they've gone down in price since I bought my XTi by quite a bit. Be forewarned, however, DSLRs are a whole different experience than regular point and shoots.

I hate to say it, but it's generally true for a lot of electronics. Buy the most expensive one you can afford.

I've yet to see consistant specs from retailers on image processing speed from hitting the shutter to having the image load to having it ready to record another image. I'm finding this is the most sought-after thing when people ask me about camera shopping, namely point & shoot. However, the larger your image size is, the slower this is going to be because I don't believe the manufacturers have quite caught on to this being a serious consideration for their customers and thus haven't focused much on speeding things up. Usually the large MP number on the fornt and the big LCD screen on the back makes idiots buy.

You might want to even consider a smaller file size to help balance speed with how big of an image you really actually need/want.

Brand names, I would honestly stick to either Canon or Nikon. I'm a Canon guy myself, but that's more to do with my existing lens collection, and familiarity with their systems. It's generally the whole apple/pc ford/chevy type of argument in the Photo nerd community. Though from what I've heard from less biased sources, Canon is a less user-friendly brand with some higher quality parts (glass) while Nikon is extremely easy to use (all nikon lenses will fit all nikon bodies etc) and lacks a little bit on the quality. So I've heard.

Anyways, if you're going point & shoot, fuck digital zoom for reals, optical only. Image stabilizer is really nice if you're making use of a high optical zoom though.

If you can get a Carl Zeiss lens on a Canon/Nikon, go for it. It's much better than the standard glass you'll find on a point & shoot, although I'm not sure if they are found on anything other than Sony/Panasonic... I forget.

Oh, one last realization. Leica is usually THE brand to get when it comes to point & shoot. However, they are rather pricey. They have some nice prism technology that allows the viewfinder see out the actually lens (no paralax error for close-ups) while not losing any visibility while the shutter trips (great for following action).

I'm looking for a point and shoot to go along with the couple of DSLRs I have and most likely will end up with this one: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

I'm gonna post here instead of making a new thread. I'm looking for a really decent professional camera as a gift for my sister. I was at best buy at took a look at a few Nikon cameras, but I don't know what to look for in professional cameras. I'm not looking to spend too much, but I don't really have a price cap.

p.s. I would like to get her something for action shots. I know that there are professional cams that are better for action shots and others for still poses. That's all i know really. thanks

What is your budget? Not looking to spend too much, but no price cap doesn't say much.

If you don't want a DSLR:

Canon S5IS is the camera I currently own and use, I paid $300 for it a few months ago. I loved the camera out of the box since I was just getting started. As you get to know the camera and learn more about photography it has tons of options for add-ons such as lens'. filters and a hot shoe for an external flash.

Add the CHDK hack and it is an amazing camera for the money.

Canon s5IS Users has tons of info about the camera.

CHDK - CHDK Wiki - everything you need to know about CHDK.

How about anything under $500/$600? I just said that I don't have a price cap cause I don't know if I can even buy anything decent for under $500 or so, so I was opened to suggestions on good cameras.

I recently bought a Nikon d60 and have really been enjoying it. I don't have experience with other comparable cameras to compare it with, but I've been happy with it.

I can give you some links to pictures taken if you'd like to see examples of pictures people actually took (rather than random things on a website).

I'm on the fence of busting the bank on a new lens soon for more of a zoom.
