Yea, can you post the links? That would help me out a lot in terms of what to look for in quality. Thanks.

I've got a section of pictures that I'm sharing on my website right now, probably as good of a selection as any to link:

    Wallpapers | Wallpapers

Those were all taken with the Nikon d60 with whatever the starter lens is that comes with the starting set (don't have my camera or packaging in front of me to be able to quote specifics.)

I'm very much a novice so most pictures were taken in a point and click kind of mode. The most tweaking that I do is to change to different modes to turn the flash off or on.

    Go there for camera stuff.

    I personally shoot Nikon d80 and a Nikon d70.
I like the feel of the Nikon way better than anything else on the market and I enjoy the quality I get out of them.

And in my opinion (again opinion) I like the nikkor lens quality and colors better than the Cannons.

+ on the Nikon D40 or D60. The D40 I have and love it. I'm a below amateur level photographer lol, but I take lots of pictures of the fish and corals in my salt water reef tank . They come out pretty good.

Here's a few that were reduced in size by lolphotobucket. This is in macro mode with the stock lense for most of them:

I've been a Nikon user for a very long time. I have a Nikon D40X and a Nikon D80... the D40X is amazing for price.

I was in your position last week, when my point and shot started dieing. I had around the same price range of around 500$ and went looking. I ended up with the D40 kit and a second battery for under 450$. The difference between the D40 and D40X is 4 mexapixels but its by no means leaps and bounds better in these models.

Some shots i did with kit lens with D40 fooling around my back yard.

I am by no means a professional, but I use to do photography from Jr High - College. Where I changed into illustration and fine art. I mainly use my camera as reference shots or composition ideas.

if you like the D200 you'll be better off with the D80 or if you can find a d70 since the d80 doesn't use CF cards which really pissed me off but since at the time my d70 was flaking (due to a catastrophic drop on my part) and needed repaired and I was going on my world tour of the summer I needed a camera.

My friend just got a D300x and all I can say is holy fucking hog crap is that thing amazing.

Im Kinda thinking about getting a d90 myself, for the video capabilities (even though it has jello vision), and its a nice upgrade from my d50. Does anyone have a d90 / used the video on it?

I'd suggest going to dpreview and asking there, if I get time I'll look as well.

As far as what I'm reading though it's not too great, but I mean it'll be better than a PaS video.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix S550 and I really like it a lot. It takes nice pictures and has a face detector mode for when you are taking pictures of people. Good camera for $150.

If you're going to get into photography hardcore, Canon has the best high end lenses, but if you're not going to get into photography much, the starter lens on Nikon's is much better than Canon's, you pretty much pitch out Canon's starter lens. Canon's L series lenses are what makes Canon better for professional photography, otherwise it comes down to what feels more comfortable in your hand.

I haven't read that much of the thread, but I have a d80 and a d40. both are fucking amazing. especially the d40 considering it's price. (~$499 i think now). the only downfall of the d40 is that you can't use older lenses; have to buy the new expensive ones. oh, and it's only a 3 point focus. not entirely bad. but besides that it's amazing. took my sig with a d40. no enhancing since i don't have any programs at the moment; just cropped.

but if you don't want a DLSR i recommend looking at the canon point and shoots. just do some research; they're some pretty amazing ones in the $200-$300 price range. clear images and video, as well as awesome sound quality.
