BG Advanced is hostile to newer players. BG Standard (formerly Newbie) is generally very forgiving. That's where most of your non-game-breaking, previously discussed content will be. I post on just about any forum - KI (rarely), alla, qcdn, bg, ffxiwiki, etc.
KI:
Good for certain server forum dramas and certain job forums. The "main" forums for events, general, and endgame are completely dead.
Alla:
Some job forums are decent with actual good info. I've seen some pretty good threads on things like SMN Group II Merit TP testing for example. Endgame forum honestly is a joke - half the threads are 'guides'. Feels like someone is trying to teach you endgame instead of discussing it. General forum is extremely hostile towards any sense of perceived elitism - telling someone their bad idea is a bad idea qualifies, even if you amply explain why it's a bad idea.
I feel like the biggest argument starters are simply someone getting rated down. Who cares if you get rated down by someone that doesn't know what he's talking about? 1 10000+ post guy can floor your rating. If you care about ratings then don't ever cross one of those guys. I remember getting sub-defaulted for telling a RDM that a RDM cannot be an effective melee DD on endgame mobs. Got rated down and told people like me are the reason why knowledge and innovation are slow to progress in FFXI. Seriously?
FFXIWiki:
If they don't qualify as dead forums, they are close
Biggest upside to BG is when something big happens in the FFXI community, you come here first. Plain and simple. You go to any other active part of a forum you just end up getting linked here. It'll be like 1 link to BG followed by 100 posts on why BG sucks - but you all GOT the info here anyways. Any real information in those types of threads is almost always going to be a regurgitation of a BG post.
BG has issues but if you want to learn about the game and be up to speed on big happens in game - any part of the game - you pretty much will end up here whether you come here directly or just get linked. Bash it if you want to but when it comes to information it's the best hands-down.
Looks like they might possible change it for WHM too, which is funny because I really don't see the WHM community clamoring for melee capability in parties.
Personally, I don't plan to start meleeing even with dramatic changes in job mechanics, unless parties start insisting on it. I'm already carrying around enough gear as it is without having to worry about accuracy sets, WS sets, haste sets, etc...
I really don't want to get a fucking Joyeuse.
But square wouldn't change a job's function without giving them some new gear to deal with it, would they guys?
Guys?
What struck me as always funny about the pro-RDM melee crowd is that WHM can probably out-parse them when both jobs are geared for it.
Joy/Justice with haste gear and suppa and enhancing magic skill gear macroed into an enspell is hard for a WHM to beat even with pwn melee gear. Although i think blau/joy might be even better than that possibly.

The only thing BG needs is for people to work on wiki.
Alla may seem more welcoming than BG in terms of people asking dumb questions but even Alla has their own elitist community try as many may to cover it up. Both sites have their elitist pricks, it comes with the forum territory.
The general information regarding more recent things has been lacking as well on Alla vs BG. I can ask a question on SCNMs here and get an answer reasonably fast - on other sites you may get people asking "wuts that?" >.>
Lets not even go into the laughable state of the other "Premium" sites which are about as useful as the 2004 FFXI Brady Guide. Stratics and Vault are two sore thumbs.
BG has flaws indeed but this site it is the most "up-to-date" site with Alla trailing behind.
Wow, we are going to need an Order of the Steel Panties soon. So much vagina chafing. People getting sad in the pants because not everyone refills their glass and offers them a sloppy blowjob here? Consider it the price of getting some of the best and fastest game information in the NA community.
Yeah, fuck, I'd totally rather get my game info from 30 fucking blogs and some sites that are updated less frequently than the damn game is.
Holy hell.
I do wonder why they won' tell us anything.. I mean, we got info that new add-ons are coming, but in regards to next version updates aside from rdm&whm updates we have no idea what's in store.. Even level sync came outta nowhere. I guess they thought the ToAU fanfest where they gave us the timeline really failed and now they rather keep the info to themselves :D I'd be really interested to hear how they're gonna use the past castle zvahl for example.. campaign? endgame? missions onry? Same goes for other iceland zones
TL;I READ IT ALL AND WANT MY TIME BACK (Page 7+ with correct settings)
oh god I'm so sad I didn't see this while it was happening. I'm really surprised Rocl even wasted his time with you too.
Excuse for not doing this goddamn paper :\
Fairly good summary. We do come to BG first, because BG was the original end-game forum. There needs to be a place where info is first dumped, and BG became that place for various reasons. Thus people's perception is it's the place to go for first info. It's a circular cycle.
However, I have seen end-game forums change in other games. Usually it's because the original is seen as so full of crap, that even if it was the first, people hate going there and wish there was an alternative. Usually, another end-game group's forums start to take over, if they mod their forums enough that it's a decent place to converse. Soon, the first place dies.
And it is possible to have a quality end-game forum. The official wow forums are a joke, but the elistjerks guild forums are extremely high quality. The mods delete and ban even the hint of trolling or flamebait. In time, trolling and flames pretty much disappear, and what's left is pure debates and conversation, people running numbers, comparing strategys, discussing information, etc. All without calling someone a retard.
So it is possible. What needs to happen, is one of the really good end-game LS's opening up some public forums. Test things. Discuss their strats on their own forums. Pretty soon, people will gravitate there to read up on it. As long they mod well enough that the forums remain clean, people will prefer it. With AV and PW in the game, the time is ripe for an LS to discuss strats and things on their own forums. People will naturally head over there to read how they are progressing, what they are testing, etc.
But it takes Mods who have the time to do what it takes to make things better. BG standard is almost ideal, but as long as BG advanced is here, standard will be tainted.
It all depends on the mods and site owners; if they care about pushing quality, so they aren't eventually displaced. This site could be so much more, but I suppose people just don't care. I've had PM conversations with a lot of people who feel the same.
If you get insulted so easly by what ppl say on the interent maybe you shouldn't be looking in certain forums. Don't want "high lvl asshats" don't pop your head in certain areas unless you can take whatever shit they give you.
I for one read for the update info and for the shits and giggles from the dramas.
