This is stupid; you fail at analogies. It's more like somebody guessing how much change is in someone else's pocket where they can't see it.

Anyway, on topic, what I think would be much better than a sign bashing religion would be a display to show the true origins of Christmas traditions, and the history behind its observance, so people could see that it's not all a Christian holiday.

Ignoring whether they really are being oppressed or not, since the Christian religion has a knack for playing the conspiracy theory cards, but if your point had real value, then you couldn't argue that women are oppressed, or that the poor are oppressed, since, women are arguably the majority, while the poor will almost always be the majority in relation to the few who always have the most power. Not to mention that a government with a tyrant/dictator can always oppress its people, and i somehow doubt the government would be bigger than the populace.

except that graph would have an even larger blue portion if it represented elected officials, which only underscores the ridiculousness of Christians playing the victim.

in Judaism to convert, a Rabbi has to try to convince you not to convert on 3 separate occasions using a different approach each time.

as for door knockers, I like talking to them and seeing what they have to say. But I do hate when they leave flyers in my door when I come home from work > I dont like picking up others trash.

I just got this email from my crazy religious mom.
    *Twas the month before Christmas*

    *When all through our land,*

    *Not a Christian was praying*

    *Nor taking a stand.*

*See the PC Police had taken away,*

*The reason for Christmas - no one could say.*

*The children were told by their schools not to sing,*

*About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.*

*It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say*

    * December 25th is just a ' Holiday '.*

*Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit*

*Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!*

*CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod*

*Something was changing, something quite odd! *

    *Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa*

*In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.*

*As Targets were hanging their trees upside down*

    * At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.*

*At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears*

*You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.*

    *Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty*

*Are words that were used to intimidate me.*

*Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen*

*On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton !*

*At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter*

*To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.*

*And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith*

    * Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace*

*The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded*

*The reason for the season, stopped before it started..*

*So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Dream Tree'*

*Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.*

*Choose your words carefully, choose what you say*

    *Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS ,

    not Happy Holiday !*

Please, all Christians join together and

    wish everyone you meet

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Christ is The Reason for the Christ-mas Season!

I'm more in the boat that all beliefs should be represented if the particular group wants it. While I don't see there being any problem with the atheist sign being displayed, when you post something so openly confrontational as what that sign had written on it, you should expect others to show an angry response. It doesn't say: 'regardless whether you think religion is right or not, have a happy holiday' or the second sign say: 'Why do we have to believe in a God to be good for goodness' sake?', it flat out states: There is no God and you religious people are ruining the holiday for everyone. How is this much different from a religious person standing on the side of the road with a sign proclaiming that homosexuals are bringing down the human race as a whole? Whether you believe it or not, the nativity scene holds a mostly positive theme whereas that sign was a negative attack.

If you think it's A-ok to tell everyone how stupid you think they are, why isn't it ok for others to tell you that they think you're going to burn in hell forever? Both seem equally offensive to me.

However, if you look at things from a purely democratic point of view, if the majority wants something to be a certain way, that's the way it's going to be. Would we really want this shit put up to a vote?

To some, a cross on a lawn is a symbol that those people think you are going to burn in hell forever, and is as offensive as the atheist sign was, if not more.

As for the democratic vote on this, this isnt a mob rule country. The most popular religion doesnt get to do what they want and "well fuck everyone else". I agree the atheist sign could have been worded better and was probably intentionally antagonizing, however I still think that most people dont see how oppressive and offensive it is to have these symbols of the christian faith (the faith that wants to torture and burn specific groups for all eternity) in publicly funded areas.

The healing hand... seen in Native American and Middle Eastern religions (mostly on healers, like the Rod of Asclepius or the Wand of Hermes is for medical doctors).

Is there an official Festivus symbol, besides the Festivus pole?

Only insomuch as Christianity is the lack of Buddhism.

Atheists maintain there is no god, not that they don't believe one way or another. Claim that there is a god, and an atheist will disagree.

I would say the lack of any belief is agnosticism, but everytime I say that, certain people choose to disagree. I'm not entirely certain where the fine lines are between one thing or another, but either way... there's a difference between believing there is a god, believing there is no god, and not believing anything.

I dont have a belief in flying pink elephants. Can I be classified as a non believer in flying pink elephants? Or are you going to argue semantics and say that not believing in flying pink elephants is in itself a set of beliefs?

I'm not suggesting there's a counter-religion for everything just by saying X is the belief in not-Y. So you don't believe in flying pink elephants, fine. Do you believe in anything else? Then you're whatever religion you believe in. Do you believe that there is nothing, elephant or otherwise? Then you're atheist. Do you not know or care either way, and don't believe either way? Then you're agnostic.

Being a non-believer of flying pink elephants is a characteristic of many religions, not just an atheistic one.

There's a whole spectrum of beliefs ranging from believing no gods exist (antitheism) to not accepting claims that god does or does not exist until sufficient evidence is provided (agnosticism). Everyone on this spectrum is called an atheist, because they're not theists.
