For the non-religious:

Go into a church on a random sunday, and then go into a church on Christmas/Easter. It's fucking packed. That's about the only thing I hate about Christmas: a packed church full of crying children who don't want to be there. ._.

As for saying 'Merry christmas' to other people and them getting offended, who seriously gives a shit? It's no different than saying 'happy hanukkah' or 'happy kwanzaa' or 'happy holidays' or 'how is it going?'. I think some people just like to be bitchy. Noone is anally penetrenating you with a bible, they are just trying to be nice and using a modified version of 'hello'. Get the damn chip off of your shoulder.

No, not here on BG, but i've had people blow up at me for saying it in passing back when I was at college. I'm definately not die hard religious or anything either, I think they might just have been cranky assholes. There just seems to be alot of holiday angst lately was the only point I was trying to make.

I'd support these kinds of campaigns to "recruit" more atheists if they were more persuasive and less confrontational, and they weren't necessarily confrontational in the case in the OP. It's just that representatives like Dawkings makes me wonder if atheists really know how to efficiently "win" fights against theism.

I am reminded of the Metalocalypse episode where they go to all the different churches and all of them are the same. One of them was a church for atheists too. I chuckled.

I couldn't care who believes in God for christmas or not, but I never understood why the non-religious get so upset about it when Christmas started as a religious holiday.

I don't think it's honestly just about recruitment, I think rather many atheists and agnostics are very unaware that there are organizations that can provide a certain sense of community for like-minded people without religion, especially during the holidays. I've yet to hear of an atheist organization that actively recruits people who are believers. I've heard of atheists that argue their points against theists, but if you've ever listened to one of those "debates" it gets pretty boring after a while. It's also not about "winning" or convincing people, I think we realized a long time ago that that approach is like smashing your head into a brick wall over and over when one side can simply invoke magic into their arguments.

But again, that isn't even what the OP was about, it's about the fact that some people seem to not think atheists deserve a space next to theists in a public forum, and that should immediately be recognized as a problem.

side note: it's been said three times now, but winter solstice can be secular.
