Just finished watching Return of the King again, and it got me thinking.

If a person fell into molten lava, would they die instantly or suffer an agonizing burning sensation?

I'm pretty sure they would feel a burning sensation as they are falling and approaching the lava. Once they're in it they're pretty much dead. IIRC lava can be more than 2,000 °F which is more than the cremation process?

I just assumed that if a person, made of flesh, hit a pool of liquid firey earth, they would die. My friends seem to think you would last a while. I disagree.

I think it's like a house fire. You are probably dead from the heat burns on your lung and smoke inhalation before the fire gets you.

Either way I think once you hit molten rock you die or go into shock pretty much instantly.

I've been looking around for a proofreading job (work from home kind of deal) for a few days now. Seems like most of the demand is little jobs on craigslist and I don't feel comfortable working with craigslist for stuff like that. I need some money though, and proofreading is really one of the only things I feel like I'm really good at. Anyone know of trustworthy online employers who might hire on a proofreader for stuff? Anyone ever done a job like that before?

We always used something like pickling salt (I think it was. Fairly large pieces of salt). That seemed to do the trick, but was a pain in the ass to keep it in place with tongue or finger.

Gargling salt water helps if it is in a place you can't really reach.

    This. Convection is a bitch.

Watch the movie Volcano. Reality is the exact opposite of everything in it. Carbon-based lifeforms don't melt; they burn.

I am an idiot and had a book shipped to a PO Box I no longer have/use. Should I just go ahead and order another copy?

    Ordered from where?

You can probably talk to either the company that sells it (it might get sent back to them) or the UPS center you originally got the PO box from.

It was a seller(bookstore) on Amazon. I sent the seller a message via Amazon asking what my options are.

If there is a realistic chance I can get the book it would save me $9, but time is also of the essence because it is for a class.

Does it show that it shipped? If not then they can just update the shipping information.
If its to a USPO PO box, contact the seller. Those can be a pain, and some sellers might not ship another until the first is returned.
If its to a UPS store PO box, contact the seller they can redirect where the shipment is being delivered.

Contact the seller ASAP regardless because the sooner they submit a change of address with the shipping company (if its not US Postal) then sooner you'll get the book.

In what cases would you need or want a post office box?

So you don't have to give your address to crazy stalkers who might come kill you, but can still recieve stuff from them.

Living in a dorm/college, other situations where your address will change in the same city and you need a 'stable' address. I had one when I moved out to PHX and I didn't want my mail getting stolen or to worry about the change of address when I moved around after college.

According to "America: The Story of Us" mini-series on History, molten liquid steel is enough to vaporize a man in only a few seconds. (for the lava question this weekend)

I'm going to re-learn how to read sheet music.

Any suggestions on how? I remember middle school music lessons where we just wrote the names of the notes over and over, so I've downloaded a few pieces of music to do this on, and I figure repetition and recognition are the best ways, but (other than buying a "for dummies" type book) are there any suggestions?

Speed isn't the question though, it's perception. If it happens that fast, do you even feel pain? It's similar to the question of beheading. Odds are good that the brain doesn't just immediately shut off, so what happens when you've been literally cut off from every other biological system besides your cerebral cortex?

It's a bit grimdark to think about, but an interesting science question nonetheless.
