Title =! Music
Just because he changed the title doesn't change how good the music was/is.
I don't think it was my favorite album, but was well done.

What? Xasthur and Leviathan have both been pushing the same sound since the late 90's, and they've spawned numerous clones between now and then. Wolves in the Throne Room is a watered down copy of Weakling, and their main effort was out in 2000.
I don't know Nachtmystium, so I won't argue on that one.
But seriously, there's almost nothing new, interesting, or worthwhile coming out of black metal period, let alone in the US.
To make this at least somewhat constructive though, Averse Sefira is one of the few exceptions. If you want some quality 2008 metal, check out their newest, Advent Parallax.
I thought 808s was complete junk. lol
Some of my favorites this year:

Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold

The Roots - Rising Down

Prolyphic & Reanimator - The Ugly Truth
Get this.
I know it was late 2007, but In Rainbows still gets heavy rotation on my iPod. Such an amazing album.

If you listen to Leviathans older stuff (10th Sublevel of Suicide, Tentacles of Whorror) then listen to Massive Conspiracy you'd be foolish to deny that there is a definite evolution in both quality and style.
And yes the bands i mentioned have been around for a while but its only now that USBM has really come into its own. Everyone is finally moving away from the textbook norwegian style and comin into line with the UKBM bands in terms of creativity.
pfffft. You could easily see that Nas was clinging to the controversial card when he tryed to label the album "nigger"... and to be honest, I tryed to like the album, it just sucked.
Most of his good shit is considered timeless whereas that album will easily be forgotten within the year.
:\
Here are a couple of my favorites (not necessarily the best):

Probably my favorite mixtape/album of 2008. It's all of their good shit in one mix.
sigur ros
murder by death
the black mages (duh)
probably others, idk i like a lot of stuff and typically dont pay attention to the year it comes out in
What the fuck @ Jay-Z vs. Coldplay.. I have to get that just 'cuz I'm a mashup nut.
Death Magnetic is probably my favorite of this year. I've played this entire CD probably once a day since I got it, not to mention it's fun on Guitar Hero as well.
And to Obev a few pages back, Disturbed's first single was Stupified and was pretty hardcore for its time. Regardless of whether or not they are truly "HARDCORE EXTREME METAL", they were one of the bands that kind of broke down the barrier for harder metal to get into the mainstream radio.
