I think you're really on to something with this. As a base element, most people are all guided by similar convictions. We all want to be popular, more wealthy, better looking, and more successful.

Think of your 10-year highschool reunion (Shit, I'm old.) Everyone there is concerned with showing up and talking about what a fantastic job they have, how they met the most wonderful person, and how much money they're making. If you haven't experienced that yet, just wait - its exactly like I'm outlining it. If you're not that old, think about meeting up with someone from highschool you haven't seen since graduation. The topics? It really boils down to "I'm <insert this many> successful."

Facebook really distills this, removing the need for actual social interaction. It doesn't matter if you're actually interesting, wealthy, successful or happy, its fairly easy to make other people think you are.

Fixed that for you. Policy was much more interesting since you had to debate the same topic all year. You gained a much greater knowledge about the topic, and since it touched on actual policy, whether it was foreign or domestic, you had to discuss the real world implications of the policies being proposed. It made for much more interesting and informed debates imo.

I absolutely dread policy, its just way too much, I don't have the kind of money to devote, not to mention I'm in a state, where the past 3 years have been on lock down by one school, as there main team spent 14,000 each summer for the Yale CX camp. To be honest, I hop around tons of events, this past weekend I was doing impromptu. I'm mainly doing PF for my shot at the Tourny of Champions. We have a "Bid" worthy debate in 2 weeks.

I'm not on here for evidence or ideas, I just more or less thought since this topic was relevant, maybe you guys would be interested

one of my good friends was a damn good policy debater, but I just grossly preferred the logical and methodologies of LD debate. Especially since I found a way to apply Objectivism to damn near everything with a degree of success. /cue Beckwin

That's honestly true of so many kinds of debate, everybody crams shit into fit their allotted time. Personally I enjoy the cramming of info in parli cause you don't have as much time to prepare for it as you do with LD/PF/policy lol.

Well, I was a Polciy debater mostly, but I tried pretty much every event. I really liked the extemperaneous events, both domestic and foreign, since it required you to have a decent amount of knowledge in a wide variety of subjects. Impromptu could be a lot of fun also, but it takes a certain type of personality to pull off a really good impromptu speech.

I can't really argue with the speed talking and evidence cramming since that's what policy boils down to. I just prefered policy sinceit dealt with more real world applications and not theoreticals like LD. Both could have very interest topics and debates though.

Pretty much same here and have managed to meet up with old friends that i lost touch with, through it.

Facebook is okay. I use it regularly to keep in touch with people, but other networks like myspace.com have lived out their usefulness. I don't see much point in myspace, then again, myspace doesn't ask for your credit card. lol

Overall I think they are a good idea when people tell the truth.

The thing I don't like about them is that any moron can pretend to be something/someone they aren't and usually only people that know them in real life can completely call them out on it.

Facebook is great for college. Keeps you connected with old friends and lets you contact classmates about projects, papers and assignments. I've also found old old classmates from like 5th grade on facebook and I've reestablished connections with some of those people which is cool.

Myspace was cool at first, but now it is plagued with spam, spyware and viruses. To me, it is just a second rate Facebook for people who like to put flashy "BABY GURL" signs on their profile.

Then again, of course you can get into hot water if you are caught with a beer in your hand in one of the pictures and you aren't 21. Not to mention employers are looking at people's myspace/facebook page before they hire them nowadays.

It's a toss up, you just have to use them correctly

Social Networking sites just means that you are in a site where you can participate in mass contact meanwhile accessing a personal profile that could have personal information. IE these profiles which could say name, date of birth, and address, which is technically enough for someone to completely steal your identity. Of course most of us are smart enough to not post that information, we still have the ability too. I can honestly say that social networking sites have broadened my horizons, and helped with the English and Programming/Tech aspects of my life, but have also hindered a lot of social contact. Far too many people rely on waiting for other people to respond to a message before furthering contact, which in turn takes longer to actually achieve a conversation. Direct conversation died with the introduction of SNS and Text Messaging.
