I'd imagined that something had to be happening beneath the water, because as terrible as it sounds, the death of a single 15 year old really shouldn't be enough to cause all of this.

had to, sorry <.<
I'd imagine there's a history of injustices by the government here and this just tipped the bucket
Another thread bites the dust.
But the greeks are kinda odd. I mean, they imprisoned 12 British Tourists for planespotting for like a month, took the British ages to free them. This was back in 2001 after 9/11 so I guess they were paranoid but still.
We could just compare the sources yea? I figure Beckwin was just upset that Correction immediately dismissed the source he listed.
BTW, I'm nitpicking..but the fact that this notion of anti-[Americanism/Israel are the two that come up most often as they both pertain to our foreign policy] come up most often in the "domestic" press, you'd think THAT would be the Stalinist perspective on current events as opposed to a group of hippies throwing molotov cocktails.
In fact, it's the primary source yea? I think it's a given that we'll look at the comments by the group's member and then check the American/Worldwide coverage.
With 'domestic media' you'll have corporate bias, which is more complicated then it sounds. With the source Beckwin listed, you'll have an obvious ideological bias but those people are intimately involved so I'd like to hear their 'side' since we'll most likely hear the Greek government's side more often.
smartest words in this thread. D:
On topic though I agree with correction on this one, and I normally HATE anything involving injuring children. But if the teen was actually throwing a cocktail at the police, I can imagine they'd try to stop it. I would not be happy to hear if the officer "shot to kill" vs. "shot to wound" but I feel since that's internal thought we'll never know what he was thinking when he pulled the trigger.
Added to that, if it is true, then they are making the teenager into a tool/martyr as an excuse to riot and push their protesting further. It may be for the good, or for the bad, we'd have to wait and see.
If the cop lied and the kid(s) (sounds like there was more than one) we not doing anything wrong, then I hope justice gets served properly.
I will say I am a little surprised, like someone said earlier little news from Greece ever comes to the states and I never knew how much unrest was going on over there.
You can definitely tell the difference between a sovereign nation and a colony in terms of the behaviour of the people. Recently, during the elections, a 19 year old was killed by police officers via beating, and you've not seen this kind of outrage here, even though, in my opinion, it merits it. What with the government ignoring a majority vote that wanted to create a single House instead of the two house system which many consider to be a waste of tax payer money, as well as the doubling murder rates for this year, recession for 3 years now, government corruption rampant, police brutality rampant, and yet nothing like what has happened in Greece.
El Vocero
The authorities from Ponce began the investigation in the death of José Luis "Gordo" Irizarry Pérez, the yaucano of 19 years of age, who died after allegedly being beaten by police officers of that city during election night, the father informed.YAUCO - La Fiscalía de Ponce inició la investigación sobre la muerte de José Luis “Gordo” Irizarry Pérez, el yaucano de 19 años que falleció luego de que alegadamente recibiera varios golpes de rotén por parte de agentes de la Policía de esa Ciudad, la noche de las elecciones, informó ayer su padre, José L. Irizarry Muñiz, mientras se realizaba el velatorio del muchacho en una funeraria de la localidad.
i'm confused.
In Greece is the Molotov not considered a weapon, unless it's lit or until it's engulfed civilian lives?
Would it be different if the kid had a firearm, or possibly a rocket launcher?
Was the cop not within reason for fearing that the kid could've thrown the thing at him?
DO THEY NOT PLAY DODGEBALL IN GREECE DURING SCHOOL YEARS?!
Stupid cop lurn2evade
riots in greece is nothing new. Been happening for 100 years at least now.
riots were happening before the boy was shot, it just, a retaliation.
Essentially this anarchist movement has been around for a long time, it's a militant group that's pretty anonymous and they pretty much run things in their neighborhoods. Cops showed up, the kids were like, gtfo cops, and the cops shot one. This particular riot is retaliation.
Essentially it's a large group of people who don't recognize this established authority in greece. But they are not really anarchists, they consider themselves autonomous socialists. I think.
Beckwin, if you're looking for a time or a series of events or some cataclysm for these riots, you are not gonna find it. (apart from the boy shot)
This is one of those things history kinda skips.
Apparantly the death wasn't really the main reason for the protests, but rather the last straw. Current Greek governement's been deregulating and lowering taxes left and right, but apparantly, other than that, they've done little actual governing (other than widespread accusations of corruption). Thus, very unpopular, the opposition is using this debacle to gain popular support etc. It's not 'just' the death anymore, as I'm reading it.
Molotov cocktails seem pretty common at the more violent 'protests' (read: riots) here, but yeah. Usually it's the bunch of anarchists/football hooligans/other malcontents throwing crap at the line of riot police with shields and water cannons, but not really getting a good throw off because the water cannons knock them off their feet before they can get close enough. Usually anything above that as a response gets frowned upon a bit in the media, due to some bad experiences (eg rubber bullets killing protesters accidentally).
But yeah who knows, maybe it was in actually dangerous distance, I'm sure it'll be scrutinized thoroughly.
This is how it's gonna end.

I'm sure there is a lot of tension in the air, but if someone had a Molotov cocktail in their hand I'd shoot them too.
By all means, but stop and wonder why that guy is throwing a molotov at you.
Kind of hard to stop and wonder when someone's throwing an incendiary device at you. Even harder when you're on fire.
come to think of it, I think slaughter at Kronstadt would be a more fitting ending.
or Tijuana student slaughter?
The reason doesn't enter into it.
I'm holding a gun.
A man is running at me with something he intends to set me on fire with.
The outcome is as predictable as the sunset. We can wonder at the reason and implications of the violence after I've ensured I'm going to survive the next 5 seconds.
