This, for me at least, is Obama's most meaningful appointment. I'm someone who wants desperately to see more scientists in meaningful policy-oriented positions, and this is a perfect spot for an excellent physicist and energy guru like Steven Chu.
here's a brief bio from the lab he's director of
About The Director
I was wondering what BG thinks of having science-oriented people in the sphere of executive influence, it's something the NIH and NSF are desperately trying to recruit young scientists for yet there's seemingly been little success. I'm personally thrilled at this, because I'm of the opinion that evidence and logic should dictate policy, but I've read some democrats are grumbling that it's a bad pick cuz' he lacks the policy experience to push through energy bills (to which I reply, don't insult his intelligence, if the governator and ronald reagan could make the jump into policy, I'm pretty sure a nobel laureate can do the same).
Also in the headlines is that he chose Carol Browner for EPA chief? This is probably a good pick too but it'll take years to undo the disgusting mess the Bush administration has made of the EPA.
