For those of you who are balking at paying upwards of $75 for a razor, take this into consideration: If you keep it clean and don't break it, that razor will last the rest of your life.
Of course you'll have to buy blades, but at $0.12-0.50/blade, and a blade easily lasting 5 to 10 shaves depending on how thick and wiry your beard is, that's a damn sight better than $4 each for a Mach3 cartridge that lasts about a week or two.
It's also more environmentally friendly, since you're consuming less materials and you produce less waste.
I've got an older Braun foil electric that I keep when I'm in a rush in the morning but otherwise I swear by my double-edged razor. While it does take some getting used to, it's by far the best shave you can get.
However, if you've got a system that works for you then there's no real reason to change. As men we're all creatures of habit, but if you do want to try something different - either out of interest or because your current system isn't working all that well - then investing in a good razor, some blades, shave cream, and a brush is pretty great if you ask me.

As far as creams/soaps its more what scent you enjoy rather than performance. Since each face is different its hard to point out *the one* choice but rather a broad selection that appeases the majority of shavers. Heck, you might find a $2 puck of Mug soap you find at Wal-Mart feels/smells better for your face then a $38 tub of Castle Forbes Lime Cream. Main thing is YMMV with just about everything...which is why it gets really easy to spend hundreds looking for "The One xxx".
Electric Razors take to long, leave patches and are hard to get in some place. (!).
It's not just for black people anymore :3
Magic Shave - Shaving Powder Gold 4.5oz
I swear by this stuff, it's usually less than $4 a can but it should last about a month.
Mach 3 or a straight razor.
that part scares me hahaRemove with spatula. Rinse shaving area thoroughly. Do not wash off with soap. If any beard remains, wait 36 hours before next Magic Shaving Powder application.

A lot of people will say that a razor gets closer since they can feel their skin being smoother, or that a electric doesnt make their skin as smooth.
When you shave with a blade, you aren't just cutting hair, you are cutting skin and taking a layer off. So your skin swells, not noticeably, but enough to cover the hair folical so that your skin just feels smooth.
Electric is superior I would think, with straight razors and DE's as mentioned up there as well. Mach3's and fusions and whatever are pretty low on that list, but I use one so fuck it. It does cost more in the end, not to mention, since I just switched from mach3 to fusion and want to go back soon.... and I have a problem with burning myself with electrics much easier. I guess a bad habbit of going over the same spot for too long. Mach3 is nice for touching up chest/crotch hair after using a bodygroom though. You can fucking make shapes in your pubes with a mach3, fucking try it. Now. Do it.
Most cheaper electrics suck. You have to get an extremely expensive braun foil shaver if you want a good shave with one. As for razors, I read that you're not supposed to shave against the grain, I forget why.
Shaving ATG with a DE or straight is a fairly advanced technique. It takes about a month for a newbie going WTG for their skin to adapt and how to shave without scalping yourself. Going XTG takes a little longer to do and for a lot of people those two passes is enough to get a pretty slick face. ATG is for people that grow a 5'clock shadow by noon and need that extra pass to get by.
By all means you can learn all the way up to shaving ATG using a slant bar razor with feather blades, but just be aware that the more passes you do the better chances of irritation and nicks/cuts/weepers. Shaving past your needs and limits never ends well.
It can cause hair follicles to curve the wrong way and become ingrown hairs. It's part of the reason why with the circular electrics, you're supposed to shave in a circular motion. Once I started doing that (instead of straight up and down), I got a much smoother shave with less irritation.
While we are on the topic as I been wondering myself, anyone here shave themselves below the border?
If so what do you use down there and is it true that there is some irritation/itching after it and if you do start trimming it you have to keep doing it or it grows back even worse.
Anyone got any tips for it? I can't imagine using a razor on my nuts it just is too,... well it seems like there has to be a better way.
i just got one of the new gillette fusion thingies, with 5 blades and one on the back, shit is AWESOME, gets it so close
however the cartridges are pricey as hell as mentioned, thankfully im not paying for them >.>, if money isnt an issue, go for the fusion
Just get a beard trimmer kit and use the closest guard setting or just go with the blade edge itself. I don't want to get into an aesthetics war, but unless you're already hairless, shaved junk just seems to either "I'm a (gay, possibly) porn star" Personally, I just keep it neat and trimmed but not totally shaved since I'm a hairy bastard and, having done the fully shaved thing before, it looks really weird. But hey, if your lady likes the shaved then by all means go for it.
You can use a cartridge razor for it, but I would stay away from anything with more blades than a Mach3.
In fact, if you're going to use a cartridge razor try and find one of those old Sensor Excel double-blade units. Before I fully switched over to a double-edge razor, I used those old (and really inexpensive) two-blade cartriges after finding my skin severely irritated by Mach3/5 cartridges. All those blades are just savage on my skin so two blades does nicely. I still have it for traveling when I don't want to bring my full kit but I'll be expected to be neatly shaved.
Elesirdur, the real question is if you have one of these awesome scuttles. Since you live in Canada there shouldn't be any excuse why not.
I actually need a good beard trimmer and am willing to shell out the money for a really solid one. Anyone have any recommendations? I looked at that BaByliss thing, reviews for it weren't so hot. Anyone got anything else?
They do look nice but I don't use one. The creme I use either comes in a tub or in a tube. I tried the block style shaving soaps and really didn't like them, they dried out my skin very badly.
This is what I'm using right now. You only use about a nickle sized amount on your brush and then lather it all up on your face. I also find it a lot easier to use than the tubs of creme paste to get the right mix of water to creme to create a good, full lather.
