Kind of like how they just released a PSP3000.
No one needs a DSlite or a DSi, as much as no one needs a 2000 or 3000, you could still play on a DSfat or 1000 fine. Unless you want to play these mythical DSi games that probably wont start showing up for another year. Sony isnt being any less money grabbing than Nintendo, in fact Sony is probably being more money hungry as they havent really improved on the new PSPs at all.

^Except the 2000 (that's the one I have, and friends have the phat) improved greatly in battery life, ram, and obviously more compact thanks to the new technology. The ram alone allowed you to do a shit load of things than the 1000 series is not capable of. I don't know much about the 3000, however, I know they improved their screen an awful lot + overall 2000 improvements.

The only reason really to upgrade is if you want the tv-out of the psp2000+ (idk anything about 3000 except that you can't mod it yet, although that might no longer be the issue)

What I was kinda going for is that the PSP is sony's only handheld, and they're not planning on making a psp2. Compare it to GB/C > GBA > DS > DSi I guess.

They're not forcing you to buy the newer psp models, I own a 1000 and it works just as good as a newer one, can play any and all games, and has no problems at all. Nintendo on the other hand..

Increased battery life sounds awesome, I may end up retiring my 3~ year old PSP for that.

The 2200mAh battery I bought for like $40 already makes my psp last like 8 hours (and it also let me turn my original one into a pandora) >.> I don't usually play much longer than that without having time to plug it in and charge it, and if I had to, I could use my pandora battery as an actual battery for another 4-5 hours, which I've yet to have the chance to do.

If I could, I would buy the star ocean themed PSP lite, but fuck paying $350-400 for that, if anything just because the speakers are in the front instead of in the bottom, and it's a bit lighter. (when i'm playing while lying down it sometimes hurts my arms after a bit.. and if I rest it the sound gets blocked cause.. yeah, lol, not a big deal though)

Sorta like Nintendo had the GameBoy/Color/Advance, and then the DS. Nintendo had no plans for a GBA2, but they did have plans for the DS.

An issue that isn't touched upon in the Kotaku blurb is how easily games can be pirated on the PSP. In that sense, it's the Dreamcast of the current generation. The amount of dollars lost to piracy will be significantly higher on that than it would be on, say, any of the consoles or the Nintendo DS -- not nearly as many people are wise to using flash carts and external drives on the NDS as they are on the PSP.

Additionally, a company having no plans for the future does not necessarily mean that they're pulling out of the market, but it doesn't mean they're staying in it, either. It means virtually nothing, and that is not always a good thing. There aren't any real votes of confidence coming out of Sony's mouths, nor are there any coming from analysts.

The PSP and all of its issues are afterthoughts. They need to focus on the PS3, and try to make it attractive beyond its Blu-ray capabilities and handful of decent exclusives. Does this mean Sony may never make a handheld again? Possibly. Is there any way to tell right now? No.

One of the Most Retarded things Sony did was force companies to use the UMD format
(mostly making all movie companies to put there movies on UMD, thinkng people would Double Dip on movies)

I'm a huge supporter of Sony products, but they really fucked themselves up by their lack of foresight into which way they should go with PSP

if you wanted UMD's to succeed, there price range should have been $5.99-$9.99 ($14.99 if big blockbuster) for movies
(No 1 was going to buy The Matrix on UMD for $17.99-$19.99, while they could get the DVD versions for $14.99)

Game prices were shit-tastic too, these are handheld games, not fucking AAA games that needed to be in the price range of $34.99-$44.99 for 1 UMD

Piracy is an issue to the PSP, but it was Sony's own fault for not addressing the issue, just gloating how PSP Hardware was seling gangbusters, but software wise it was in deep shit-tastic

Hacker's made the PSP do more for it's owners than Sony did, when pirated games/movies loaded/buffered faster than there UMD counterparts, there was something really wrong with that

You create your own DD (digital distribution) network "PSN, Playstation Network", to release PSP games that are mostly older titles and you sell them @ irregular prices 5-10 dollars more than tne UMD?, not cheaper, but more?

You create 16GB Memory Stick Duo's, then complain why hackers/piaters just steal your game and just install them on their sticks, knowing well, that Sony has/had the opportunity to curtail this, but greed is good, why be pissed @ piraters/hackers, there the ones helping make the PSP sell faster thru hacks, heh Sony gains +1 on there total sold column and your monies

I think I wrote too much

Sony has tried to stop hackers, but there isn't a damn thing they can do about it.

That was a spectacular bunch of bullshit. Wish Lik-Sang was still around.

That would actually be a good way to hide it (if they want it to be a big surprise* or something) without really lying. (Plus add to the surprise since a lot of people won't be expecting it as it seems most interpret this as "NO MORE SONY HANDHELDS. EVER.")

It's also a good way to lose customers and developers. Oh why should we buy/develop for the PSP and try to strengthen it in the market, when Sony seems to not care about handhelds anymore.

That rumor is, if anything, a commentary that makes logical sense, and probably isn't really a "rumor" at all.

Since Sony is going to be investing the majority of their money and effort into boosting the PS3, it's not all that illogical for them to leave potential business plans like these till 2009. If anything, I do strongly doubt that companies are already developing for a PSP2, however. That aside, by 2010, we'll know whether the PS3 successfully recovered or if Sony's firmly entrenched themselves in third place -- thus, that would logically be the right time for them to pursue additional forms of revenue.
