I've got GS to 98 because I wanted to make my own kaiser gear and signed HQ earrings and rings for my friends.

I lvled smithing to 100 mainly for signed gear items. These are some of the signed stuff I made for myself over the years:

Full Signed Luisant Set- must've easily cost me 3m+ of breaks/mats.Was making em when it first arrived.
    Signed Haubergeon +1- 1/12 attempt
Hexagun +1- Had to sell it for Sam and Mnk items.
Full signed german lvl 30 set including the lvl 28 shield :D
Signed hachi hand+1,feet+1- Had to sell feet
    Januyiwah +1

I started on Goldsmithing. but then i got as far as 68 and was getting fed up with the amount of money i was spending to try to skill up.
I decided to level some subs, starting with Bone to 60. It only took me about 4 days with hardly any money spent and i didnt want to stop. Also i liked the idea of signing my own HQ things like SH+1 and Genie Weskit. So i decided to quit gold and levelled up bone.
Glad i did because it was cheap, took hardly any time to do,
Also once i hit 100 i started to craft for profit. I think it took me only 2 weeks to make back the money i spent levelling it

Now i am levelling Fishing, 70 so far, and levelling cooking on mule (70 also so far) so i can cook the fish that i catch.

My first craft to 100 was picked totally by chance.

FFXI was my first MMO, so I knew nothing. After ordering it, I started reading every FAQ and website I could get my hands on while waiting for it to arrive. (This was back 4-5 years ago though, so there wasn't nearly as much info out then as there is now.) Once I got playing, I was waiting for a party. I had random crap in my bag from soloing. I recalled reading that you could do something with crystals, so I tried to use a crystal on everything I had in my bag. A gobbie mask desynthed and gave me .1 leather, so I figured leather was meant to be my craft since I had gotten my first skill up so easily.

I do almost nothing with leather now, only time I ever use it is to synth for others. I make the lion's share of my money through woodworking and alchemy.

I never stopped enjoying crafting though, and I'm currently working on a cloth mule.

    Woodworking to 100

Why? At the time RNG was my main and I planned to stick with it while woodworking complemented that and also pairs well with fishing to fix your broken rods.

After leveling RDM I stuck with it to HQ staffs for myself which also seemed like a good profit while 3 of the 5 WW cursed pieces were actually usable and I did want a profession that could HQ a cursed piece for the possible -1.

Its nice making bolts on the go but if I could do it again I might go something more lucrative like clothcraft or goldsmithing since all you can make at 100 is ammo/ranged weapons/staffs as not much else has a market.

Bonecraft to 100. Was easy enough for me to handle, and I wanted to sign my own ninja and thief gear. No sooner than i hit 100 and EVERYONE AND THEIR STUPID ASS MOTHER LEVELED IT.

Doing cloth now, simply because I enjoy crafting. Don't ask me why, but I do. Not expecting a damn bit of return on my investment either. My ls doesn't have a clothcrafter, so that'll be nice at least.

I have untold of bad luck too. Only thing I can HQ are behemoth rings. Like 4/12 on those so far.

Yeah i love crafting too. i think i really would have quit if not for crafting.
Levelling fishing on main and cooking on mule right now, its basically what i do for 90% of my in-game time.
Then i will probably take a break, finish a couple jobs to 75 and then start on a mule but i havent decided yet on which craft, wood or leather

I'm basically the same way... I easily spend 75% of my in-game time crafting or gathering materials for a synth session.

I don't really know why - but crafting sure is addictive... lol

    Thanks for the input guys.

I started taking crafting seriously after watching FULL METAL ALCHEMIST.
    True story.

Although PUP is the closest to an "alchemy" job there is, I still haven't unlocked it lol.

i leveled it because back in 2004 or whatever snk/invis oils and everything was profitable. before campaign +1 and +2 potions were profitable. and back then even eye clusters for ohat were 1m+

    oh the ole days, now i just hq holy water ;;

Been at 97 cooking for a few years now. I figured ppl will always be buying food, so cooking would be a good idea. Didn't know it was the easiest craft and flooded with undercutters, and you have to make a bazillion synths to squeak out the smallest profit.

    Woodworking to 100

Being a SAM from as soon as I could unlock the job, wanted to HQ 5/5 Shura Gear. (this was before i realised hands/feet sucked to shit lol) Also I was an avid SAM with bow, liked making my own arrows and logged a lot on Ghelsba Outpost as a noob.

I eventually ended up buying my first Haidate -1 with a small loan from a friend, as WW wasn't high enough, but was determined to still do it.

A little later i risked buying a dlog with the little gil I had and HQ 1/1 my first Haidate-1! So that part of the goal is done. Working on sub for Togi and my Kabuto luck is terrible atm.

I levelled Alchemy to 100 for three primary reasons.

    1) I wanted to level a craft that didn't cost a fortune to get to 100, and I could level casually without devoting all my gil to it or invest millions upon millions of gil to get to a level where it broke even. I was never looking at it as a get rich scheme, but mostly as something to do -- it seemed like a part of the game that I was missing.

    2) There's always a market for consumables. It's hard to make a lot of money consistently off of Alchemy (and, honestly, I very rarely bother trying), but having 100 Alchemy pretty much guarantees you can have pocket change if you're running low (fill up your 7 slots with some fast-selling consumable, will make some money if not much).

    3) I wanted to sign my own Blood gear -- learned somewhere along the line you can't sign it, but I still wanted to at least make my own. I ended up doing that with W. Legs and W.Feet, but retired my Crimson Feet before I bothered trying to HQ them. Never got W. Head or W. Body.

    Currently:
    Main - Nishida - Cooking 68, Fishing 9
    Mule - Lolcat - Woodworking 29, Smithing 0
    Mule - Ryuzaki - Alchemy 0

    Aspired goal in the end:
Main - Nishida - Cooking 100, Fishing 60 (loooong time for this one XD)
    Mule - Lolcat - Woodworking 100, Smithing 60
    Mule - Ryuzaki - Alchemy 100

    Reasons for said crafts:
Cooking 100 to make my own food (make money by saving money..and the occasional HQ food sale)
Fishing 60 to supplement cooking (Don't want to take to 100 cuz too lazy to get Lu Shang's)
Woodworking 100 to eventually get RNG to 75 (its 40 atm), HQ Staves, and HQing Cursed Gear
Alchemy 100 for HQ meds(to sell and use), HQ Cursed Gear, animas, etc.
Smithing 60 for Woodworking subcraft and to sell the occasional ingot (darksteel, etc.)

    Obviously a work in progress and will take a long time, but I don't see myself leaving the game any time soon..and besides..I hate farming..so gogo crafting! >.>;
