Movie "Delgo" Worst Box Office Opening of All Time (MC: 27, RT: 12%)

I honestly don't think that outside of the uncanny valley argument that most people thought that Spirits Within was a bad movie. It's mostly that it wasn't related to Final Fantasy at all, yet they had the name slapped onto the title and that turned almost everyone off immediately.

And I don't think we're all just being crotchety and old when we look back at some of these old cartoons and compare the quality to cartoons today. What kids have to watch today is absolute crap compared to what we got in the 80's and early to mid 90's. Gargoyle's, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, TMNT, or... pretty much anything you see on FoxKids these days (Though strangely enough, I enjoyed Viva Pinata if it's still on the air).

Yeah SE or just Square? in that time shoulda just did the cash cow thing and make an FF(4/5/6/7/8/9/X) movie instead of trying to make new IP. Even if they did try to make new IP they shoulda made it more fantasy than scifi.

This was my main problem with the movie, I mean, seriously if you're going to make it animated at least make it appeal to what people who watch animated things are into. Some dashes of humor here and there, possibly even a comedic relief character, some awesome actions scenes, a little bit of melodramatic romance, hell they could have even thrown in some fanservice and it would have gotten a better response.

Instead, all we got was a non-inspiring psychological sci-fi that was straight out of the Asimov short story reject pile. Nobody likes looking at tight-lipped, freckle faced, stoic expressioned astronaut suit characters, no matter how real looking they are. Where are the notorious SE shitty costume concept artists? It was a sham I tell you.

What I really don't get was how they left the fantasy part completely out of the movie. I mean shit, sci-fantasy worked so well for them in all their games, did they seriously think battlefield earth part duex was going to get them some hot ratings? Not to mention that the fan base couldn't relate at all.

They simply mistook the 'psychological' part of psychological sci-fi for 'mystical'. And besides, they said the word spirit like 10 times in every scene. Spirits are a total fantasy element, right?

SE was trying so hard to prove that they could do a live action movie in CG, that they neglected to use all that technology to make something -interesting-. Yeah, you can render individual pores on a character's face, but CG lets you go further than plain old reality, so why stop there? Why bankrupt yourself to make a generic sci-fi movie? FF games are all about the crazy fanciful characters/monster/locales, but none of that made it into Spirits Within.

Yes, this was mostly due to lack of advertisement, though supposedly the movie itself was pretty bad. If you watch some trailers, the animation looks pretty dated. Probably because it took them 10 years to release the movie.

I think Square was scared to release an Original Final Fantasy story

They got scared and went the "sci-fi" route, hoping it would get them atleast a small profit

If Square could have waited just a little bit, LOTR and its trilogy showed that there was a demand for fantasy storytelling

But alas it wasn't meant to be

I don't think they went for the "sci-fi" look because they wanted, but because it's a lot easier to create a realistic metal wall than it is to create a realistic ground and trees.

I too enjoyed his movies.

However, I did not enjoy Spirits Within at all and I did see it in the theatre =( The best part about it was the ending theme (L'arc en Ciel).
