With those slots you can approximately gain an additional 250 HP which is usually enough to put a Taru where they need to be to compete with the other races.

In a worst case situation, you either have to pick low HP, or reduced MP and Enmity+ gear as a Taru. Nothing game breaking really. Getting 8/8 HP merits reduces this problem even more.
You don't have to sacrifice anything, just gearswap.

    Yeah, pretty much.

I just got my Tabard for my RDM last night, so I'm gonna bust out my RDM/NIN next time I camp something~ (tomorrow with maint probably). The other PLD in my LS is kinda scared I'll over do him easily unless I hold back so he can share hate

I've tanked as NIN and PLD, just never RDM/NIN~ so will be an experience

I just want to highlight something Judai said.

This is so important, you have no idea. You can be god's gift to tanking and still die if your support isn't playing ball with you.

Other than that, fuck tarutaru. http://www.bluegartr.com/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif

My LS's main tank is a taru.

He did get oneshotted a bit as ninja. I've never seen him oneshotted by anything unreasonable as pld or rdm/nin though. He doesn't tank on nin at all anymore anyways, his pld and rdm do much better.

Taru pld with 8/8 MP merits here, love it, wouldn't change it for anything. 1400~1600hp/700~800mp depending on the setups.

And to the person saying max mp doesn't matter cause you have a shitton of refresh: YES it does matter. I can cast cure4 like 10 times back to back without emptying my mp pool, can you do that? I don't think so.

Also, shame on all of you using Cassie earring, shame

Yeah max MP matters at times, like the near-wipe in Dyna-Tav. Support was dead, I was standing with 4 more melees fighting a THF Fomor. I was able to stay alive pretty long thanks to Cure IV spam and Chivalry. I was killed in the end, but they managed to take down the THF - 2 melees left standing. Might have been different if I went down way earlier.

But I'm guessing max MP is pretty moot when your support is alive.

Due to that kaeko testing, you can categorically say tarus don't hold as much hate. The importance of HP really can't be trivialized, while MP easily can be. For the most part, you're really not spending your 600 MP pools with proper refresh unless you're running a HP swap to spam it on yourself.

Hmm, what would require you to cure4 yourself 10 times back to back? Just for the sake of the argument.

Berserker torque and hp macros say hi, as well as curing other people in different parties from aoes/etc, you know, being USEFUL.

(I love all these crappy plds I end up stuck with that will just stand there doing nothing when they could be curing someone who is in yellow in a different pt)

Ok well that makes more sense. Thought you just meant yourself. I couldnt think of any situation where a Pld would need to stand there are repeatedly casting cure4 on just themself until their MP was gone.

ok im an idiot and misread it...

That response wasn't aimed at you since I didn't see your post until after I posted, but the answer kinda answers what you asked so yeah.

Back when I did tiamat lowmanned with like 12 people online or what not, I basically acted as a tank and a second WHM for the tank pt, which was incredibly helpful.

Taru's strength is MP, if you're not abusing it, you might as well reroll as a different race.

Skill is more important than any racial shortcomings. Playing as a race that has natural strengths that are the complete opposite of your job's requirements might get you a little crap from your friends though. Just ignore it and do the best you can! At least that's what I'm gonna do someday taking my Galka ass to BLM 75. Maybe.

lol @ the tarus hold less hate because of lower HP argument. They have like 300 more MP to blow on cure 4 cheat spam at the start of the fight than any other race, and that adds up to a lot more hate than the marginal loss from having lower max HP. It doesn't take that long for any race tank to cap hate anyway, and at that point your loss doesn't matter much (unless it's a full reset) since you're gaining it way faster than you're losing it.

I RDM/NIN tank a lot of stuff (on elvaan) and idle in around 1300 HP including food, which is about what a taru pld is around judging by this thread. Even without SS up, I never really feel like I'm in much danger with that much HP except for random Byakko rape and fluke weather from CB. You could have 2500 HP and get steam rolled your first time tanking Ixion or Ultima: it's not the HP that matters, it's getting used to how they swing.

Too bad some of your Taru HNM tank career fell into the area of NIN/BRD lol

The fact of the matter is, I've been tanking for about three weeks now, and have yet to be outclassed by any Paladin on any target. I take less physical damage, I take less magical damage, and unless I take a 700-damage something-or-other, I have the attention of any and all targets for the entirety of fights.

the advantage of a wide mp pool is if you are losing hate or moreover on a mob that resets hate regularly, you can shunt a big chunk of MP into a colossal enmity spike from cures on anyone who's taken some damage and reassert your enmity quickly without endangering yourself finding your tank too empty to hit that cure4 when you get slapped around a bit.

I didn't real through the whole thread, but this is what I have to say, plain and simple.

As a tank myself, I would rather you be a skilled tank then a galka with 2.4k hp who watches me tank solo.

I'm not generalizing saying galka's are terrible, I'm pointing out that, if you do your job well, none will complain about your 200 hp loss. There are very few situations where this actually matters anyway.

The bottom line is this: Tarutaru have a base HP about 150 lower than a Hume, and about 350 lower than a Galka. Let's explore the ramifications of these differences.

Base Taru HP for a pld/nin with no gear on is approximately 1050. Let's say this Taru takes a hit for 105 damage. This works out to be 10% of his HP.

Now, let's take a Hume pld/nin. His HP will be approximately 1200. If he also takes a hit for 105 damage, it will be 8.75% of his hp, which is 12.5% less than a taru.

Now we will take a Galka pld/nin. His HP will be approximately 1400. If he now also takes a hit for 105 damage, it will be 7.5% of his hp, 14.3% less than a hume, and 25% less than a Taru.

As you can see, the hate degradation of a Taru is kind of large compared to other races when taking hits.

Using the same characters, it is FACT that the tarutaru has a better chance to be one-shotted or quickly killed before cures can be cast. This is simply because he has less HP to work with. If a Hume got hit for 1150 damage at once, he would survive, possibly long enough to get up Ni or to have the WHM finish casting a cure5. However, a taru would have been killed by this. Furthermore, a Galka has more survivability than both a hume or tarutaru.

On the topic of MP, the bonus taru get, in my OPINION, doesn't really matter much. Since the advent of Ethereal earring, Chivalry, Devotion, and all the mp/tic we get from ourselves and refresh/ballad, most pld would be hard-pressed to run out of MP. Often when I'm tanking pld/war in dynamis, I sit at 300mp max, and I don't ever really run out. On /nin, I'm usually at around 500mp max, and I would really have to be screwing up majorly to have to be curing enough to run out. (i'm a hume, btw)

NOW, knowing their obvious weakness, a smart player of a Tarutaru pld would gear himself to make up for it. Your average Taru pld probably wears much more +hp gear than a hume or galka would. Granted, they may have to sacrifice stats in other areas (such as haste or VIT) to cover their inherent flaw, but they will definitely still be able to tank the same things as other races, if not quite as easily.

FINALLY, the most important factor behind any PLD is the player controlling it. A highly skilled Taru pld player will outplay a noob Galka pld every time.

CONCLUSION: Yes, tarutaru have some deficiencies when it comes to playing Paladin. Given the same exact gear and player, a hume or galka will have more survivability than a tarutaru. However, these deficiencies can be negated through proper gear selection and player skill. In the end, the skill of the player vastly outweighs the race he selected.

My view on Taru PLD is the same as Elvaan BLM.
If in xp PT they are usually better geared than others. But in end-game situations there is always better alternatives.
