Base Taru HP for a pld/nin with no gear on is approximately 1050. Let's say this Taru takes a hit for 105 damage. This works out to be 10% of his HP.
Now, let's take a Hume pld/nin. His HP will be approximately 1200. If he also takes a hit for 105 damage, it will be 8.75% of his hp, which is 12.5% less than a taru.
Now we will take a Galka pld/nin. His HP will be approximately 1400. If he now also takes a hit for 105 damage, it will be 7.5% of his hp, 14.3% less than a hume, and 25% less than a Taru.
As you can see, the hate degradation of a Taru is kind of large compared to other races when taking hits.
Using the same characters, it is FACT that the tarutaru has a better chance to be one-shotted or quickly killed before cures can be cast. This is simply because he has less HP to work with. If a Hume got hit for 1150 damage at once, he would survive, possibly long enough to get up Ni or to have the WHM finish casting a cure5. However, a taru would have been killed by this. Furthermore, a Galka has more survivability than both a hume or tarutaru.
On the topic of MP, the bonus taru get, in my OPINION, doesn't really matter much. Since the advent of Ethereal earring, Chivalry, Devotion, and all the mp/tic we get from ourselves and refresh/ballad, most pld would be hard-pressed to run out of MP. Often when I'm tanking pld/war in dynamis, I sit at 300mp max, and I don't ever really run out. On /nin, I'm usually at around 500mp max, and I would really have to be screwing up majorly to have to be curing enough to run out. (i'm a hume, btw)
NOW, knowing their obvious weakness, a smart player of a Tarutaru pld would gear himself to make up for it. Your average Taru pld probably wears much more +hp gear than a hume or galka would. Granted, they may have to sacrifice stats in other areas (such as haste or VIT) to cover their inherent flaw, but they will definitely still be able to tank the same things as other races, if not quite as easily.
FINALLY, the most important factor behind any PLD is the player controlling it. A highly skilled Taru pld player will outplay a noob Galka pld every time.
CONCLUSION: Yes, tarutaru have some deficiencies when it comes to playing Paladin. Given the same exact gear and player, a hume or galka will have more survivability than a tarutaru. However, these deficiencies can be negated through proper gear selection and player skill. In the end, the skill of the player vastly outweighs the race he selected.
