To those who buy an iPhone, for the love of god Jailbreak it.

It makes it twice as functional and you can really customize it and make it yours.

My lock screen can show me IMs and preview emails.

There is a really huge homebrew/3rd party dev. community out there for the iPhone. Much bigger than any other handset. This is what made me choose the iPhone, even though I abhor apple's marketing and "image."

For those who are complaining about AT&Ts 3g, It varies by location like anything. In Tampa it's flawless and super fast. I have never had a dropped call that was my phone's fault due to bad coverage.

Bottom line is that if you buy an iPhone and jailbreak it, you're getting so much more for your money.

I used to jailbreak my iphone 2g, but with the 3g, I don't really have any reasons of jailbreaking it...

Skinning it is not worth the slowdown of your interface, imo, and I don't need to tether the network connection.

Yea, I haven't jailbroke mine and I really don't intend to. I'm 100% content with it now and I'm getting everything I want from it and more without jerking with it.

The ONLY reason I would ever jailbreak it is so I can tether it to my laptop and use it as a modem, but I'd need a shit ton of convincing to jailbreak it.

Was just at the Verizon store- guy there said he didn't have the storm (though once I saw the price I decided that my wife wouldn't really make sufficient use of it to make it a worthwhile buy)

Point is the guy said that the Storm is having software issues. He said he expects to get some in over the next few days and for them all to be back by the week after xmas due to all the software issues. Take it for what it's worth.

does that require an extra surcharge, or wut? i've never heard of doing this outside of paying for an additional service, but it would be nice for internet on the go where theres no wifi, don't want to do it if i'll get b& or v& >B|

I read that one could get around the tethering by having another phone around and swapping sim cards.

    Thanks!
It's a software problem. When the apps store first opened, there were a few GPS programs that came out but Apple nixed them. Rumors say it's because Apple and AT&T might have their own GPS in the works. Maybe Macworld will address this.

You could get b& by ATT if they found out you were doing it, but to answer your question...no, it's free! lol

What are the downsides to jailbreaking?

I still can't quite bring myself to get an iPhone. For some reason I feel that the failure to do something so simple and obvious that my 4.5 year old free phone can do (picture messaging) even on the second generation of the iPhone is tantamount to saying "Haha it doesn't even matter what we do people by it anyway!"

It just seems like I'd have to denigrate my own self-worth to buy a product missing such a desired and completely fucking obvious feature. Huge nitpicking but yeah... (no need to break down the last two paragraphs, but I am curious about the answer to the first)

Downside is you can't take a jailbroken iphone back to apple when you need service, you have to restore it to factory defaults first....then they will never know it was jailbroken.

Other than that.... I can't think of a downside, besides not being able to get updates right away. Usually takes 2 days for the devs to jailbreak the latest firmware.

Cant you brick a 3g and make it a paperweight? However using bestbuy warrenty think you can just brick it, drop it, say it broke after the drop, and get a new one instantly... but that costs 16$ a month

I think some of you are confusing unlocking and jailbreaking.

Unlocking is not reversible, will void warranty and can brick your phone.

Jailbreaking just allows you to install stuff that isn't apple approved. It literally takes about 10 minutes and is completely reversible and will not void your warranty because after you restore there is no trace. The main reason I did it is that I hated not being able to customize things like the background behind the apps and not being able to create folders.

With jailbreak, you can see the bottom row of icons are actually folders. No more 4 pages of apps. I can also now run Beejive in the background constantly so I don't have to set up a push-mail account and drain the battery more. I also have a plugin that makes the phone vibrate every 10 minutes when I have a missed call or SMS, instead of the default once ever.

To me it was about the freedom to do what I wanted with the phone I own, not just what apple says I can do.

Jailbreaking can brick itouches and phones last I heard, this was post 3G as well. Just like you can brick a PsP, and once bricked as an Iphone I thought it wasn't reversible.

If it's safe to jailbreak a 3G, then I'll be getting my phone tomorrow instead of closer to christmas.

I've jailbroken quite a few of my friends phones and I follow the community pretty closely. I've never heard of jailbreaking bricking a phone since the days of the old 2G. It's pretty uncommon if it does happen.

The only way you might run into problems is if you upgrade the firmware before checking first to see if it will mess it up. Upgrading a jailbroken phone could lead to problems, but all you have to do is restore the phone, upgrade, rejailbreak.

Edit - If you're worried about bricking Buy your iPhone at Walmart (on the 28th) or Bestbuy. They'll exchange it out without testing it if you somehow manage to brick it, if it's in the first 30 days or so.

Yes, the Storm still sucks after the OS update.

Too bad all those early adopters don't understand there are bugs with new everything unfortunately.

I just updated to 4.7.0.83 last night (yay for Verizon employees leaking software) and the phone has made another huge jump in performance, accelerometer is extremely quick, and the browser has made a huge stride in rendering pages and speed as well. And Camera lag is pretty much non-existent. Keyboard is much better as well, as it can actually keep up with how fast i type now lol.
