Playboy has apologized for a controversial cover on the magazine’s Mexican edition that featured a nude model in the traditional pose of the Virgin Mary.
Well, it was sort of an apology.
Executives at the Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. issued a statement saying the company did not approve the cover and that the Mexican edition is published by a licensee.
"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the statement said.
The cover shot of a nude model with a white cloth shrouding her head and covering her breasts hit stands Dec. 1, just days before an annual Mexican festival that celebrates the Virgin Mary, or Virgin of Guadalupe.
The cover headline reads, "We Love You, Maria" in Spanish.
Publishers at Playboy Mexico denied that the cover, featuring model Maria Florencia Onori, was intended to depict the Virgin Mary or any religious figure.
“The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover," publisher Raul Sayrols told Reuters.
Playboy Mexico printed 100,000 copies of the issue.
