Not the NM's, people small man Xarc a lot and farm only the NM's. If you go in with 6-7 people, the amount of condemnation and quadrastrikes from an NM are going to be pretty taxing on the mp if you're /war. It's not that they hit that much harder, they just take quite a bit longer to kill with only 6-7 people.

When we did Xarc, we typically had 12 or so, 18 at most. We farmed everything but solo tanking the NMs PLD/NIN is alot easier on the ally then PLD/WAR. /WAR is fine if you have 3-4 WHMs to cure you on each NM and a couple tanks. When you have 2 WHM for your entire group and are the only PLD, the amount of damage is a bit much.

Pretty much what everyone said regarding PLD/NIN in Xarc, and like I said we've only done the zone 3 times so we're still getting a feel for everything.

The first time in, we went with PLD/WARs kiting the NMs while the group cleared regular mobs and NMs, and lack of knowing the proper kiting path and inexperience in the zone added up to a lot of damage taken.

So far we've found it easiest to have PLD/NIN kite the NMs, and even tank them. They take awhile for us to kill so keeping hate is pretty easy and it's not nearly as taxing on our support. I did figure out a few good paths on some of the NM towers where I could kite them all day long and not get hit.

The way my shell handles Dynamis mobs, PLD/WAR is far more efficient than PLD/NIN (as has been said previously) or /RDM. We usually go in with at least 25, so healing isn't really an issue on things like Xarc NMs. We have enough to where anything but PLDs and THFs die in under 30 seconds, so the PLDs on the run are the MAs and they just voke/flash a mob. 99% of the time I'm PLD for Dyna, and I've never had issue getting a previously slept mob off a mage.

Outside of Dynamis, PLD/NIN is really easy to get started with. You can have your tanks start with Sky or Sea guards to have them get the feel for it. Having great gear is not so much required for this, you can get away with just a base set for most things.

I haven't had any experience with PLD/RDM, but for things like JoL, KB, and Ouryu, my shell uses PLD/DRK. I would assume if you are tanking something PLD/RDM, this is where having good/great gear becomes almost a necessity, if the mob is meleeing you. I want to try RDM sub someday, my gear can support it (Ares, Hauteclaire, D.Ring), on something like Sky or Sea guards, maybe a Fafnir.

Just have them try it out sometime, once they get their feet wet with it I'm sure they'll rather go PLD/NIN in the future.

I use /WAR myself and never had problems either. The mobs die so quickly that you can't keep hate long enough with just RDM spells.

We use PLD/NIN for all the hard hitting HNMs you have to straight tank. I use PLD/DRK for KB and it works marvelously. I also use PLD/RDM for Fafnir, Ouryu, and JoL. I wanna try /RDM for Nidhogg ever since I got my Aegis. From recent experience, /DRK for Ouryu sucked hard because recast timers aren't back up quickly enough.

Since we're on the topic if /RDM, is it viable to get a MND set for Stoneskin?

I personally carry one with me at all times. It's mostly stuff I already carry though for various job ability swaps (crimson scale mail, morgana's choker, valor leggings +1), and I just grab my RDM's MND gloves and rings. I'm elvaan so it's within reach and as inventory-friendly as it can be I guess. It's also not something to bank on, but on mobs where Flash really helps (RoZ crap), recasting Stoneskin is a definite possibility. With those new gauntlets out and the gorget, having a 410 stoneskin on Paladin is super-sexy...

Ya, as merona said, when gearing up pld/rdm, a solid mnd setup can buy you some nice added survivability in your SS recast (provided whatever you are fighting will allow you to get SS back up).

Encourage your paladins to use their new subjob combos tanking campaign NMs for practice since it's essentially risk free.

You should try /RDM on Ouryu. Weeee is the only PLD who ever took hate off my NIN/DRK in that BC, and he did it as /RDM. It comes with the added benefit of dispelling his annoying stoneskin during your hate cycle. I tried NIN/RDM a couple times, but enhancing magic just from a sub job isn't sufficient to dispel his stoneskin consistently.

At any rate, the timers for /RDM hate cycle spells are low enough that you never run out of things to cast even when you have his wing slow on you.

I thought the only people who were stupid enough to pld/war big things (dynamis excluded) were all on Kujata, Any linkshell that's over a year and a half old and originated on kujata still think it's cool to Pld/war, or if they've finally gotten wise to pld/nin none or very little have an hp down set lawl

Though I have to commend them for playing the game on hard, JE used to take down Tiamatt and Nid and kb with Pld/war tanks iirc, thats gotta require some epic cure bombing

My LS was the first NA LS to kill Tiamat on Ramuh, and we did it with PLD/WAR and Aerial Armor rotation. Sometimes with NIN/WAR to tank on the ground and/or an IRON-style WAR/WHM. And yes, an outside healing party. Seems pretty silly now.

Sheep song lets you put another sleep on things, plus another couple of AoE's that can be used without waking them, and add yourself to all of their hate lists.
