Not saying they are doing everything right or that there isn't a ton that could be fixed, but to suggest that if you were there you could fix it all with the snap if your fingers is pure hubris.

No, but I do know teleport npc shouldn't be 3 minutes away from moghouse when you have to use them all the time. I do understand there is a serious unbalance between difficulty/reward of manys events, and that no one is ever going to equip certain items if they are designed to suck.

I don't know who is taking final decision for FFXI, but I'm certain that person never played the game and doesn't understand his fanbase. He is under the impression that the longer people take to do something, the longer they will play, and that's just wrong. You need to create addictive content that players would play for months, not artificially make everything take forever, especially the part no one like.

Pompous maybe, but they aren't gods either. Most of them probably have 0 experiences in mmo design, which put them on our level. I sincerely wonder how many of them even played a mmo before...the higher up probably never did.

    [edit]
And really, I do think a lot of people on this forum would be better at making the game enjoyable and addicting. Some people would make the game too easy, but any gamer with programming experience should be able to do a good job.

Some would argue that they actually spend more time with the game than the developers, in some cases it is definitely true. Also people who are staring at lines of code all day and people playing the game have two very different experiences when it comes to a game.

I think you missed the point of what I am saying. I am not saying that the game is perfect or that there aren't major flaws. I am saying that there are so many other factors that determine what happens in game development that we don't even know about.

Have you ever been on a committee for your job? Trying to get anyone to agree on anything, in any department is just insane to begin with and I just work in a library, I am not developing a game that involves planning, development, programming, support and everything else involved.

Honestly, I prefer to think of SE as how I look at my office, there are people that have ideas, some are dumb and some are smart, and everyone wants everything but no one wants to pay for it, train for it, or deal with it. People have pet projects, some people are slow, some are sloppy, some are good.

What I don't understand is the idea that SE is some how different from normal regular people at a job. *shrug*

Remember, I don't think that SE is perfect, far from it, I just think that they are doing a decent job, could do way better if the world was perfect, but it's not so...

I absolutely agree with that! And that is why communication with the players, especially increased communication with the NA and EU players is so freaking important!

What SE really needs is a bilingual liaison for each global area, that picks a forum and actually posts on a close to daily basis, in the open, fully acknowledging that they are an employee of SE. Even if they don't say much, they can at least say that they are reading what we have to say. They would also need to direct some kind of discussion about the game from time to time also, when it comes to changes where public input would be helpful. So not on things like new content, but on game revisions, which jobs need boosts, how to implement or adjust things to improve game "quality of life" etc. Finally, I would hope that they would temper pretty much everything they say with saying "we hope to do" and "we plan to do" things is very important. To me these are the things that Blizzard does well over SE.

SE: With the addition of our new challenging monster "Hydra" within the Wajaom Woodlands - we'd like to get some feedback on how our playerbase is enjoying the newest creation!

Players: Its fun but the rewards suck. Orobon Lure from an HNM? Is that supposed to be a joke? Please add better loot SE!

    *Next patch rolls in*

Players: Omg Hydra drops this sweet new katana! They listened to us!

SE: We're happy to have pleased you guys - now we'd like to request some feedback about Moblin Maze Mongers - do you enjoy the concept? What needs work?

If SE kept an open line of communication this game would easily be on par with Blizzards dev teams. The main problems SE has is direct communication and swift resolution of player problems. WoW players usually say that the dev teams listen too much to the playerbase and that problems arise from it but the overall FFXI playerbase has been complaining about the same issues for years so it wouldnt be hard to fix many of the problems or at least talk about them with the players.

Its always disheartening to see SE patch something thats broken within the next update (stuff like 2handed weapons and mazurkahorn) but the constant stream of complaining about stuff like poor lootpools on HNM or lackluster new JAs (footwork) will take years to resolve.

Unlike the WoW playerbase which is huge, the smaller FFXI playerbase allows for better communication between developer and gamer in a closer relationship.... if SE would ever allow it.

I approve of this and pretty much everything you have said in this thread. This should happen not just with us, but with the EU and JP people too. Pick a vanilla forum to do it on like Alla or the Wiki forums, and make it plain that it will be heavily moderated and that responses aren't going to be always what people claim they want.

If the Devs make a forum here or on KI or Alla for the sole purpose of question/answering, FFXI would rape the crap out of WoW playerbasewise eventually. Maybe Sono, Pikko, and 6souls should make a forum-trifecta to annoy the crap out of SE for this. Throw in Elmer and Bercus for JP/EU relations and it could be ftw.

I know exactly what you mean and I usually end up being the person that makes everybody agree on something. However, if what I make people agree on is everybody gets a raise, my boss can still say yes or no, and I believe that's how it has to be in SE - there's somebody there that can hear something good and choose to say yes and hear a bad idea and say no. Or, at least, we hope.

SE would have to hire someone specifically to deal with it. It is very obvious right now that they only give forums a cursory glance from time to time, but no one specifically focused on it.

What they need is the equivalent of a STF for player communications. An internal team completely dedicated as the contact between the players and the developers. I think that is kinda what Sundi is supposed to do now, but it's obvious his job is much more broad than that right now. Just three or four people could do the job if they pick a NA, EU and JP contact person, and it could be tailored to the specific internet community style. Separate forums for NA and EU people and then BBS for JP people. Without people specifically dedicated to player communication then it is always just going to fall by the wayside.

I understand and agree with this, however, I don't think it can be used as an excuse in the end to explain the slow progress. The point I was making earlier is that fixing many broken aspects of the game would be extremely easy, and should have be done a long time ago. If someone somewhere is preventing those "good" ideas from being implemented, there is something fundamentally wrong with SquareEnix's mmo deparment.

I'm not targeting anyone in particular, because I can't, but as a whole, SquareEnix is disconected from its fanbase. I'm sure certains employee are doing their best everyday to give great contents, but there has to be someone somewhere that has a vision that is different from most players.

In any case, I play FFXI for the same reason I smoke my cigarette.

Sometime I wonder if SE is trying to kill their playerbase, figuratively speaking anyway.

somebody at SE is running things poorly. why else has SE lost so many of their developers over the last few years? the teams that eventually made xenosaga and lost odyssey just to name a couple.

because Microsoft will empty crap loads of moneyz to get the 360 to sell in japan. With big name developers from one of Japan's most loved videogame developing company, Microsoft would spend infinitegajillion dollars, and if said game developers didn't take advantage of that would be out of stupidity/company loyalty - same difference.

They "lost developers" because said developers wanted to move onto other things. You could say that someone at every game development studio have been running it poorly, because it's well known that some big names from a lot of the major game development studios have left to form their own studio.

Yeah, it happens all the time and really has nothing to do with anything but money. Right after launch Blizzard lost like two entire development teams for WoW. Bungie had the same thing happen after Halo II or some where around there.

Really? Please tell me how much combined time you have spent at:

    1) HNM camps
    2) Dynamis
    3) Limbus
    4) Salvage/Nyzul
    5) Sky
    6) Sea
    7) Other major events

After prime routes had been decided.

And tell me this is about having fun. FFXI was fun when it was new and noone knew everything yet. See: Signature.

I camp HNMs because I find getting gear and fighting them fun. Often times, I don't get to do either, but when I do, it generally makes up for the time invested, in my lovely opinion.

I do Dynamis because I find it enjoyable, the same goes with Limbus, Salvage, and Nyzul. Not to mention I'm sure people get joy from getting gear in the game as well. It is entertaining, all of those events. I had a blast last night in Dynamis - Xarcabard, and nothing was out of the order. Hell, I was even on Black Mage.

I haven't done sky in forever, as its one of the places I detest and only go up there to help people I like get shit there, and then usually, I'm with people whose company I enjoy, and have fun. I do a lot more sea by myself (solo-ing pop items, organs, chips and the like) and I manage to enjoy it, even more so when it's alliance of people I enjoy/can stand killing the NMs, whom I still find interesting and fun, if for lack of challenge.

I'm sorry you don't have fun doing end-game events in FFXI, I do. I can't count up how much time I've spent doing every event, that's a ludicrous task for almost anyone posting on these forums, but I can tell you I enjoyed nearly 90% of the time I spent doing them. Yep, even those 3 hours wasted at Dragon's Aery.
