Even though there was a choice of servers we could have moved to, the exact things you mentioned happened - alliances and guilds were split on where to move, and it ended up breaking bonds between players. Plus, you have the other servers absorbing a bunch of players. I don't expect that to be too much of a problem in FFXI since it's not too hard to find a loose group of players and keep going. But the issue of possibly losing friends and LS mates and people whose play styles you are familiar with is HUGE.
Well yeah and that's why I think this whole situation is stupid pretty much. I mean if they asked people to leave its obvious that they're at capacity for the server, and linkshells who do a tiny bit of research I'm sure can find a place they want to go to. The fact that they have to force people to move off the because everyone wants everyone else to move is absurd. I still hope if it comes down to that they select people completely at random to be moved.

I don't think its really a matter of people not wanting to move because they want everybody else to move, I think its pretty much what people stated earlier that there's a draw to the Odin world simply for the attractions such as LBR and OB. Also, people notice that although Odin has some of the most famous linkshells throughout all servers, being LimitBreak, TK, and BBQ (combined to form Awesomeland) at endgame, there isn't much drama surrounding the endgame world here.

I'd have my account canceled in less time than it took for them to transfer my character if they picked me to move at random. I've been on Odin since NA release and all of the people I run around with are people who I've been around for 4+ years. Sure, there are plenty of people elsewhere I can meet and hang out with, but why should someone who's been here since the start be forced to move and have to rebuild their entire friend lists when SE failed to block the reason the server is so overpopulated atm anyway? SE's customer service is bad and maybe I'm giving them too much credit here, but I have a hard time imagining they'd do something as dumb as randomly force people to move.

If it comes to force, who knows how they'll decide to do it. I tend to view the process atm as being similar to a voluntary layoff. SE is asking it's customers to voluntarily move at the moment. If it comes to force transfers, it'll probably go by tenure on the server in the same way most companies lay off their employees. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but about the closest thing I could come up with.

    Overreaction.

Simply blocking off new people to Odin will do the trick.

The problem won't get worse, and if you are on the server and don't like the overpopulation you can leave.

lol, how is it an overreaction?

I agree the correct course of action should be just to keep the server closed and let nature's course play out, but if I'm going to have to build an entirely new friend base because of a forced server transfer, I'll just do it in a different game where I can experience different/new things. I've pretty much done everything there is to do in this game at this point and that friend base I have is the only thing that really keeps me playing this one.

Half if not more of the server would just stop playing. That would be server suicide. It would destroy all of the LS's on Odin, and all of the effort of people that have worked hard for gear but have yet to get them.

Server size doesn't mean shit if everyone quits with the way you deal with the issue.

The reason a lot of people still play this game is because of friends or because of long-term pay-offs, if you mess with either of those things, then you may as well just delete all the character on the server instead. Just because some people don't have friends or they can flit between servers without caring or they don't have the ability to focus on long-term rewards doesn't mean that everyone is like that. In fact, on Odin, you may actually find more people like that than on your average server.

No offense but the idea of randomly moving people off of Odin is a stupid idea.

I wasn't clear, sorry. I meant, overreaction on SE's part.

I think he is saying that SE's statement was overreaction. If he was saying that our reactions were overreactions, then yes, I agree with you Q.

I have no reason to play this game anymore if I am not playing with the people I currently play with. *shrug*

Kinda funny cause we had been joking among our linkshell that SE was being just a wee bit optimistic in thinking that a free transfer would incent people enough to leave. Some had joked that they would start offering incentives in the form of gil or rare items to leave the server. But I guess instead of turning the carrot into a nice big piece of chocolate cake, they decided to go with the stick instead.

Makes the most sense to remove the most recent transfers if anyone. I think people have already pointed out the reprecussions SE would face if they were to use some random selection process. Never really got what drew people to the server in the first place, but definitely fair to say our drama pales in comparison to a lot of places.

    Oh and...

I think more people would be enticed to leave if they offered a truly free world transfer, and only exclude servers that would have a projection for the possibility to become overpopulated.

Anyone that thinks SE is going to boot the recent server transfers and lose/refund thousands upon thousands of dollars in fees is retarded.

How does it feel to be a giant douche in real life?

And where is the logic behind refunding fees? Have you ever read the EULA for this game?

Just put yourself in their shoes for a sec. If this was Unicorn that was so rediculously over populated, I doubt I'd even be able to just transfer like that, because it's my home. I'd just learn ways of dealing with the problems that are involved with server overpopulation, and I would be content with being where I'm most familiar with and where my friends are.

Don't get me wrong. I can sympathize with people not wanting to leave, but at this point they don't care. They've given several warnings that this was coming by trying to constantly move people off. Granted they should of stopped it awhile ago, but its obviously to the point where they have to take action. I was on one server for 3 years before I moved I know exactly how a move can change things but consider this. If they're giving you an option to move to ANY of the servers they listed, or be forced to one of those and not have a choice in the matter, and you let it come down to them moving you, then you're just foolish and deserve it.

If they force say, the last 500 most recent characters off the server, I guess that would be most fair, but this game has never been about things being fair and equal so.

That mentality would work for something like Katrina. Louisiana govt. warned over and over for people to gtfo, but a lot ignored it and look what happened. This isn't anything on that scale. Ray Nagin didn't create or control Katrina. This is simply something SE had the power to fix a long time ago, but didn't for whatever reason. They've given us warnings at the same time they've had world transfer services open to Odin and character creations open on Odin. They could have cut those facets off when they first started getting bombarded with "Server Congestion" GM calls or even "Whitegate congestion".

This is more like a restaurant owner kicking people who are seated, eating dinner instead of the people crowding the doorway because they ignored the fire marshal's "room shall not exceed this capacity" number for years. Or it'd be like an airline booting someone who booked their flight when it was first available that was in their seat waiting for take off in favor of some one they sold an overbooking ticket to.

If I were faced with the choice of potentially refunding a couple hundred world transfer fees or potentially losing a large number of monthly subscriptions, seems like a no-brainer to me. Sure, it hurts at the start, but not in the long run. Not exactly sure why anyone thinking along those lines would be considered "dumb" unless they can't see past the immediate ramifications.

People that want to stay on the server they started on, and all their in-game friends are on are foolish and deserve to be randomly moved?

Do you even realize what you are saying?

Actually, "half" is too strong of a word I think. From what I've heard the NA population size isn't that abnormal, it's the Japanese player population that's especially crowded on Odin, thanks to publicity from the players writing for the Lightning Brigade guidebooks.
