I'd try it myself but I can't find my disks, so I'd have to buy new ones. I ask because the ps3 doesn't come with that external harddrive to plug your internet wire shit into, or does it?
Thanks dudes.

As far as I know, it is possible but you need the older models such as the 60 gig. Because of the backwards compatibility.
Null is correct. There was an update provided quite some time ago which enabled users to play FFXI on their PS3. If you've been online anytime in the last year or so -- truthfully, I believe it's older than that -- you'll be good to go, so long as you have a unit with backward compatibility.
If you have a brand new, store bought PS3 without backward compatibility however, it will not work.
at first, I forgot FF11 came out for more than PC and I thought hmmm... that works? then I remembered it is out for ps2... and now I still want to see if it will take my PC discs anyways even though I know it wont work...
fuckkk i think i got the ps3 maybe last christmas, i cant remember. it was probably mid-year though, thanks.
