Well to be fair, the vana'diel as we know it is actually pretty small if items are any indication of the size of the FFXI world, as they implies existence of at least as big as civilization as the one in quon/mindartia on the north/east/west/south of the main areas.

While Celestials are the representation of the element, I'd imagine it wouldn't be impossible for more terrestrial to exist on the other part of the world, as they're more or less ascended being, or just lesser gods, assuming FFXI pantheons consist of Altana/Promathias on top, Celestials below them, and Terrestrial below them. Would leave a lot of room for more terrestrial if they're that low on the pecking order of the deities.

Of course, until SE releases a decent lore overview of the vana'diel as a world, I doubt anything could be more than mere speculations.

Yeah and cause anyone who actually plays this game knows that SE has broken the story line before. Like Septimus said they do what they want when they want. For years we heard ToAU AF2's will not be in Dynamis, then after years of thinking of alternatives they said "fuck it, just throw it in Dynamis".

I'm not even saying that they will be the new summons, Im just saying any past avatar is possible.

I'm sick of all these people reciting the story line like its the freakin bible.......

So... if people are going with the theory of "SE made portals to the Avatar Realms for Odin and Alex." Can the theory, "SE added Dream Bells as a hint that they're adding Geomancer as a job in the future."? >.> Bells being Geo's weapons from FF3.

yes it's silly, but it's near 4:30am for me... and it kinda made me chuckle after all this other speculation.

Thunderpony, Catshit, Atomic, Bizmarkee, Shadow Lord, or whoever, just call them a terrestrial avatar of something. Since the terrestrials embody pretty specific concepts, it doesn't make a lot of sense to limit them like that. This way, they could add as many traditional avatars as they want -- though I like the idea of one per expansion, personally. Makes sense from a development standpoint.
I am fairly certain that it was explicitly stated that there are 5 and only 5 terrestrial avatars during the CoP missions. (And there are 5 gates in Pso'Xja for each of them.) I remember someone once suggesting that each of the Terrestrials were meant to protect one of the Mother-Crystals, but I do not remember text like that in the game. (But would explain why Galkas reincarnate if their Mother Crystal, Al'Taieu, is connected to the Phoenix.)

But this doesn't mean that there aren't other categories of Avatars, Temporal, Spacial, Extra-Terrestrial, Spectral, Nautical, or whatever other adjective they want to apply to them.

I'd love a Cait Sith avatar when the number of them is whittled down to one as seems to be happening (especially if it was the one who is always upside down in the cutscenes) - screw storyline consistencies etc... the kitty is just soooooo damned cute and I think it's got some fantastic animations to it.

I always figured Alex and Odin were Guardian Avatars moreso than Celestials on account of everything you find out about them in ToAU cutscenes.

But let's bring this back on track:

Why do people keep saying it's going to be something that doesn't even match SE's criteria/hints?

The reasoning behind the Magus Sisters is that it would fit all the hints SE has given about the new Summon.

    1.) Large
    2.) Multiple
    3.) Terrain issues
    4.) Unique method of control

In short: Not Ixion. Not saying Ixion is impossible but it is far less likely than the magus sisters.

That's only half true. A good partion of the mobs within Einherjar are test subjects while the demons and the vampyr are the ones that break out from the portal. In fact, the monsters were set loose in there to keep outsiders from investigating too closely. In a TOA CS, it was stated in response to Hazhalm's supposed closing, "...putting a bunch of laboratory nasties in the way of any curious folks was about all they could do." It's never clearly stated whether they simply let loose everything they had in stock or added some baddies for good measure, but they aren't all coming from the gate.

In my opinion, Alexander and Odin both prove the myth of all Avatars originally being mortal; I expect an ancient war between their nations when they were both flesh & blood is the root of their very obvious and visceral rivalry. To wit, their rivalry is what drove their followers to despise each other and ultimately call them to battle in the Day of Judgment, not the other way around. I mean, think about it: They're both concerned with justice and revenge, two concepts thrown around a lot during war. They are both fully clad in armor, something you wear when going to war. They both charge their people to go to war for them by using their power. IMO, all that says Eternal Struggle, and those don't generally start just for the Hell of it.

She's not fat, she's just wearing one of those "look at me I'm pregnant but not really" dresses that girls seem to be so adamant on wearing whenever the hell they want. The things that sort of look like sun dresses but they're sort of divided in the middle.

    ...
I think he meant the galka, not the mifra and w/e she's wearing...
Meaning, the 3 in that SS are more Magus than the Shikarees are.

For people still deriding SE for just adding ToAU and WoTG relic to dynamis, it's all pretty simple really to explain storywise. Once portals to the past opened, puppetmasters, blue mages, corsairs, dancers, and scholars all began to participate in the Crystal War and hence, some must have joined the Hydra Corps (or we will hehe) and had their armor enhanced to augment their abilities. Hence why relics are now in the dynamis zones.

In a way, WoTG allowed SE to cop out storyline wise when it came to adding the ToAU relic.

Ever since Dark Ixion was revealed to be an HNM ive always thought of him as just a magical creature that happens to have that avatar "glow"... it doesnt seem to be an avatar the way FFXI defines them and i dont believe it ever will be. Why?

For one, you actually pluck pieces of Dark Ixion upon defeat and use said pieces to create armor/weapons. Since when do players go around butchering avatars? Seems more like a legendary creature since avatars either flee from battle leaving items or simply return to their protocrystals. (Yes, Alexander did neither but you broke his automaton host so....... ya)

Secondly, Dark Ixion and Auroral Alicorn dont speak. All of the celestial avatars and terrestrials have been capable of some form of speech (Bahamut runs off at the mouth about how much better he is than you, Odin speaks about Ragnarok) yet neither Ixion speaks. They neigh like horses and have nothing to say when you trigger actions on them (ash throwing vs curing). They seem to have some form of higher intelligence but they dont approach the kind of knowledge that say Carbuncle possesses.

I guess you could say that they are a new breed of avatar that SE has yet to explain fully but I see more similarities between the Ixions and a Wyrm than an avatar.

The only thing i wish was that Auroral Alicorn was another HNM prancing around the past full of shiny items >.> Whats better than one angry pony? TWO angry prancing ponies

There was never a problem with SCH & DNC relics, they existed during the war, so there's no real problem there.

The problem with TOA relics is that creating AU job equipment (especially the BLU set) takes knowledge only Near Easterners would possess, and that clashes with the Empire's non-involvement. Haja Zhwan is the only real loophole for this, since her participation suggests at least a token amount of covert Imperial involvement. From there you could imagine them letting Relic designs slip out, but it's a slippery slope, imo.

I don't think they were originally mortal, but rather they manifested inside already living mortals. So the things that were originally people (Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Odin)/beasts (Titan, Leviathan, Garuda)/automatons (Alexander) provided the physical vessel, while the gods make up their mind/soul/consciousness/whatever. (If they started off as the mortals mentioned in their respective legends, they'd be less than 10,000 years old and younger than the terrestrials, which would contradict Carbuncle calling them "the old gods".)

@ronin sparthos: I feel the same way. I'm thinking that unicorns and sandworms are going to be part of a trinity of overused WotG HNM models, with a theme of being roaming NMs. (Like how RotZ had behemoths/turtles/wyrms and ToAU had hydras/cerberus/khimairas.)

Another thought regarding the ending of TOAU (if it wasn't said already)
    Spoiler: show
Didn't they speak of salvaging some magic from Alexander or something? Hmm, even if it was true I am not sure who you would fight since you already fought him once...

    That's an interesting thought.

How are the avatars learning about Vana'diel?

Hitching a ride on the dreamtime of mortals.

Actually, they wouldn't be less than 10k years old if those legends took place either before the Zilart came to power or while they were around. Just because Zilart was the biggest game in town doesn't mean they were the only game in town, most of the legends took place in areas that weren't on the mainland. Also, you think Zilart just immediately became technologically advanced? There had to have been the same gradual growth that all civilizations experience.

In any case, whether you accept my idea of their origins or not, I've been saying that Alexander & Odin's rivalry proves their personalities are mortal ones. If the Gods were created equally, why would they care if the others lived or died? Granted, the Roman & Greek Gods were assholes for no reason, but if they were like that, the other 6 would be fighting each other when they awoke instead of just us. You don't hear legends about Ifrit fighting with Shiva or Leviathan, whereas Odin & Alexander's rivalry is something very well known and documented.

The only thing that fucks this theory a bit is the idea that beastmen were supposedly created around the time of the meltdown and the Ramuh story mentions them, but since not everything can be taken as gospel, the only fact we have about the beastmen's origins is that they were created "after Promathia had died.", which actually was before the meltdown. There's also the existence of beastmen off the mainland (Mamool Ja, Trolls) and the Ramuh story doesn't mention WHICH beastman attacked them. It's possible all beastmen were created by the meltdown, but it's just as possible than none of them were.

I always just assumed that the Odin v Alexander feud simply stemmed from the fact that they are both strong and weak to each other on the elemental chart. All the other Avatars have a balance in which they are strong to one, yet weak to another. That keeps them in balance. If Ramuh starts something with Leviathan, Titan might back stab him in the process. Because of that possibility, none of them ever try to start anything. Alexander and Odin don't have that same balance, so they're just going to duke it out forever.
