Thread: Magus Sisters in FFXI?     submit to reddit submit to twitter

In regard to the earlier discussion about how many terrestrial avatars are out there, I believe Tenzen mentions that they are "five powerful gods" (not just "powerful gods") created by the mothercrystals to protect Vana'diel, so that's where people get the whole "5 terrestrials only" idea, I think. (5 crystals:5 avatars) However, Tenzen isn't supposed to be all-knowing or anything. It's also worth noting that Diabolos says that he became a terrestial avatar in the "best ending" (if you defeated Promathia) for Waking Dreams, (which might mean that the Vahzl mothercrystal chose him or something) and I think it's also said somewhere that he was "born" in Pso'Xja.

Actually, they wouldn't be less than 10k years old if those legends took place either before the Zilart came to power or while they were around.
I guess I just assumed that it was after since Shiva looks Elvaan, but that's just aesthetics I suppose. As to how the beastmen originated, I think "beastman/beastmen" is just a term for humanoid creatures that aren't the five races, Zilart/Kuluu, undead, or plantoids (yet stuff like moogles, ahriman, imps, and pixies are excluded). We know that the Kindred, Lamiae/Merrows, and Poroggos weren't created by the Meltdown, yet they are considered beastmen. As such, it is possible that other humanoid animals existed in the time of the Zilart.

There are only 5 terrestrial avatars both by what Tenzen says and by the fact that if you explore through Pso'Xja you'll find 5 doors throughout with one of the Terrestrial avatars inscribed on each. I can't remember since it's been a while, but I believe you actually get to Diabolos' battlefield through his own door, while Pheonix's and Fenrir's doors are blocked by rubble. I'm sure there are screen shots somewhere.

As for the legends that SE gave us a while back. Those aren't related to the summoning avatars. Those were just legends and fables that were made up by people in the world (I'm guessing the Far Western nations) to explain the constellations, not to describe where Ramuh, Shiva etc came from.

Magus Sisters mentioned in Dissidia files with regard to FFXI could be an indication of many things. I HIGHLY doubt they will be new avatars. This has nothing to do with traditional notion in that the Shikarees are JP meme for the Magus Sisters.

It is possible it is a typo.
It is possible it refers to the Shikarees.

It is possible at the time of the printing the reference to XI is in regard to future plans on implementing them. That could mean a cameo as Quest NPC, BC opponents or even as summonable avatars. Remember you couldnt summon them in IV so it should be obvious that version appearance references in the Dissidia files have nothing to do with the users ability to utilize those characters

Majority of FFXI is an homage to FF installments that came before. The plot of Treasures of Aht Urhgan is a meme to the subplot of a rather epic installment.

automaton castle and a horse riding king trapped at the bottom of the sea...

It wasnt Alexander, it wasn't Odin perse... should be obvious if you know the history of the Olduum culture and its main element... but heres a hint he rides a horse too.

    :D

that or its the avatar that this game needs to balance the lack of specialized buffs : Asura.

but i would just wait and see...

Well, it's probably worth mentioning at this point that the crystal system isn't the only system of which Vana'Diel operates on.

Otherwise the whole ToAU storyline wouldn't exist to begin with, since that involves the existence of the underworld itself from whence Luzaf and his crew escaped, and Cerberus sent to pursue him, which would have been impossible if everything operates under the crystal system, since there are no purgatory or whatsoever, just merely cycles of soul reincarnations.

Over that train of thoughts, I suppose it's not gonna be impossible for SE to just pull anything out of their collective asses.

Too bad it can't be their head.

As a drunken thought at the moment, I enforce my belief that Cloud is going to be the next avatar. Main SMN's will proceed to bitch for Sephiroth two weeks after. Then two weeks after that it'll be Aerith. Therefore SE can feed SMN's what they want, which literally doesn't fix anything about the job, while maintaining the shit storm of fan-service. Brilliant!

The sisters would be too much for the PS2 to handle... I highly doubt that's it.

I'm still a firm believer it will be Alexander... they announced it's a large summon, they've been having problems with the terrain, it's already in the game in a mission, SE announced you need to learn how to control it and you recall Alexander is controlled in ToAU mission 44 (by Razfahd), plus there is 2 dark associated avatars already, and only 1 light associated avatar... but that logic is flawed seeing how SE does things that don't make sense often. I bet Alexander's Astral Flow move is Divine Judgement

The terrain issue can go towards a few avatars..seriously:

    Bismarck
    Ark
    Anima
    Siren
    Ragnarok
    Kjata/Kujata (whatever its spelled)
    Hades
    Madeen

    Etc

As for the mission...if you recall..Razfahd controlled the Iron colossus..which is just armor that Alexander, the actual Avatar, possesses after you defeat Razfahd..So really, a terrain issue can be considered something to do with a primarily stationary summon..all of the avatars idle..yeah, but the majority of them float, which allows them to bypass some terrain..though their pathfinding isn't too hot.

    Avatars

    Vana'diel has only 8 Celestial Avatars;
Ifrit, Shiva, Garuda, Titan, Ramuh, Leviathan, Alexander, and Odin.
These are depicted by constellations in the sky, and each represents one element.

    There are also the 5 Terrestrial Avatars, who guard the Mothercrystals;
Carbuncle, Fenrir, Diabolos, Bahamut, and Phoenix.

Square-Enix only has 4 choices, and they did mention they're adding more than one. If they add Alexander, it'll require completion of Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and Odin would require completing Einherjar. Bahamut would require the completion of The Wyrmking Descends and Phoenix a series of quests involving Tenzen releasing her from his sword to be reborn. In any case, at least one of the avatars is already in the game, and the model is too big to be summonable, hence the interview answer. The terrain issue only really applies to Alexander though, leading me to believe he is one of the ones to be added. No matter what the other avatar will be, it will be giving people more motivation to complete storyline missions, and maybe get more people to show interest in Einherjar.

Adding any other avatar would be a little to contradictory to the world Square-Enix created, even for them.

It is entirely possible that there are more avatars than celestial and terrestrial though, no? However, the big idea I'd heard previously was Cait Sith and Atomos being opposing avatars seem to be less and less true as you go through the WoTG missions. They would focus on the whole space-time continuum bit, rather than the element/heavens and crystals :d

Cait Sith, at least, doesn't appear to be an avatar. (Due to what happens to her during some of the more recent cutscenes)

Alexander was never controlled. The body he manifested in was controlled for a time, but as soon as he awaked himself he took over completely. While the other Celestial Avatars are given a reason to aid you and be summoned by you, Alexander doesn't. Both him and Odin have no reason or will to exist outside of battling each other. However there was an opening left for Alexander to return, having to go through all of ToAU's missions just to get him would suck something fierce.

I'm gonna go with choice 5) It's an avatar or mystical being of some kind that's not a Celestial or Terrestrial Avatar. While three of the four Summons you mentioned do have in game models, two of them are fully awakened and fought directly in endgame battlefields that require an alliance+ to win. One of them is only seen at the end of an entire mission line and the last, well the last one is possible despite not having an in-game model...but the storyline surrounding it would be awfully wonky.

    Alexander

    Spoiler: show

The machine used to control Alexander, upon defeating him, opens a portal to the plane of Avatars, as stated by Shantotto in the final cutscenes of the expansion. If Alexander really had no other reason to exist other than to duel with Odin for all eternity, why would he be a Celestial Avatar in the first place? Only time will tell us if we get to summon him or not.

I never thought of the possibility of summoning something other than a Celestial or Terrestrial avatar. Defining a new class of avatar would be a little much for adding only 2 new avatars. But Square-Enix never said anything about there only being 2 did they? They could very well add 7 if they wanted to, and restore the inbalance between the elements.

Correct. The most we've ever heard from SE is more than one. So, that obviously involves at least two. Most everyone has just assumed that that means "two" new avatars. I agree, I can't see Square adding more than two avatars at one time. I also wouldn't be surprised if they still only add them an update at a time. SE loves their baby steps.

The next summon could be Alexander. It could be Odin. It could even be Doomtrain. But, I very much doubt we'll see any more of the Magus Sisters beyond the Mithran Hunters.

It will never cease to amaze me why people don't assume it can't be new avatars..I mean, why not just add new ones so they wouldn't have to contradict major storylines to conform to the players?

Why do people want ones that make more sense as story elements for avatars anyway? Bahamut? It's made clear storywise AND from SE he won't be one..Phoenix can be reborn, but her role is over..her role also requires great sacrifice to harness her power..we're led to believe she is no longer alive, and only exists in 2 forms: Sel`theus and Tenzen's Blade.

Fenrir becoming our avatar made sense, because he allowed himself to be summoned before..but it requires a summoner of high quality to summon him, hence why you need all the whispers..Diabolos also made sense, because he wasn't exactly your enemy.

Then comes Odin, as I said and as the story explains, your pact with him is FAR different than what your pact with other avatars are. SE can always change it..but they'd have to contradict a major storyline for it..but seriously..why would Odin serve you? What would be the purpose? He served Luzaf till he encountered Alexander..what happens after you disobey him or your pact is complete? Poof.

There is a portal left open at the end..but why over analyze that? It could be something as simple as a rip in space & time due to Alexander returning..there HAD to be an ending, because I bet money if they didn't throw that in, people would ask:

"What happened to Alexander if he's just possessing a maton?"

As for him being linked to the terrain issue?..Why? Nothing about the Iron Colossus would conflict with the terrain that Titan wouldn't have conflicts with.

In the end..why not just say..it could be completely new avatars altogether?

Does anyone know the full story behind why the Dark Rider just roams around? I always thought he seemed kind of pointless so far, beyond leaving prints behind for the assault ranks.

I highly doubt the new avatar is Odin, as we already have 2 darkness based avatars and a third would be redundant (unless he would be type-less, a la bahamut in earlier games). I just wonder if they dont use him as a jumping off point for explaining a new avatar.

Edit: Just to add, it could be something totally out of left field. Like we learn the tonberries worship Uggaleph, we do some quests revolving around that area, and come to learn Uggaleph is actually Siren or some such, then we make a pact with her. Would be a shocker for sure.

like it was said before.. they arent limted to celestial and terrestial avatars. seems people forget that summoners can summon elementals also.
They can add whatever they want and they'll make it work for them. hell, they could make it so we make a pact with a great spirit of a cactaur, tonberry, moogle, chocobo. they were summons in past games. they could even make up an all new summon. PUP came out of nowhere afterall.
