    WiiWare/VC Games

I'll have a decent amount of points coming in for the family Wii tomorrow. Lost Winds, World of Goo, Secret of Mana are ones that I'm going to get for sure, but what are some other games (casual/multiplayer or not) worth downloading? As for the VC, I've played most mainstream Nintendo games from late NES on, but are there any old gems that I might have missed along the way?

Lost Winds and World of Goo are the gems of WiiWare, for sure. I'd also toss on Mega Man 9 and Toki Tori (a good puzzle game).

For the VC I'd suggest Gunstar Heroes (amazing Genesis game, one of the best action games ever), Sin and Punishment (Expensive, but amazing formerly JP only N64 game), and Ecco the Dolphin (it's a strange adventure game, hard to explain). If you missed Super Metroid, kill yourself then get it and play it.

Ecco the Dolphin ftw, lol...something about it I just can't explain either. If you've never played them, Donkey Kong Country 1,2,3 all up there too as well as mario rpg. Personally DKC 1&2 are some of my personal favorites on the SNES. iirc, Golden Axe might be on the VC but I don't remember, I know there's some Phantasy Star's on there, which would definitely be worth it.

I would avoid any genesis games since this bad boy is coming out:

    No gunstar heroes? lol'

Also, if you have the 360, controlling with the d-pad will blow so hard. PS3 would be fine.

The Strong Bad games are excellent, but it's cheaper off of Steam. $50 on Wii vs. $35 on Steam I believe.

LostWinds is good, but the game is seriously only 2 hours long.

The only other Virtual Console game I bought was Megaman 9, which is a blast.

i only have mario rpg, secret of mana, rest of it i'd rather download off the net and emulate, got megaman9 too.

i'd recommend u pick up Sin and Punishment (n64), decent but short shooter,

    Thanks for the recommendations.

Apparently exiting a VC game creates a save state that picks up where you left off when you exited, so now, for Secret of Mana, I don't know how to get back to the main menu for the game to start a new file for my brother.

Spend the $20-30 and get a "Classic" controller. GameCube controllers are just terrible for NES/SNES/N64 games because of the lack of classic cruciform AB/XY button layout.

    ^This

I was lucky enough to have 2 from Tenkaichi 2 & 3, but they are priceless for the VC

The wiimote itself is fine for NES games, and I didn't have any sort of problem playing zelda/mario 64 on the gamecube controller. Seems like you would only want a classic controller for SNES/genesis games.
