The more I play through Crisis Core missions i wish they had some form of materia synthesis in FFVII. I'm kind of enjoying putting the random magic together to form Dark Thundaga etc, kind of fun. :3

It's funny cause I really enjoyed how individual the characters were and how you could switch party members quickly and easily. It made battles a lot more fun and made each character at least somewhat useful (is there ever a reason to use Wakka apart from attack reel?)
Or just kill one of your party member, fuck it will even do you that favor on its own if it doesn't breath your party to kingdom come on the first turn, ruby dragon is retardedly tame with 1-2 people on party, I remember drawing the shit out of the first one I found on Laguna scenario for flare or some other high level magic.
Malboro though, is satan's spawn unless you're 100% prepared for it with status junctions and/or initiative, or you lucked out on odin.
Anyway, I must be the few people that enjoyed FF8's system, but I was an avid Triple Triad player and love card modding > magic > high level magic refineries for all my spell, so I don't really draw shit save for like the map draw point on the island closest to heaven/hell, or some select spell like triples from odin, etc
Magic is fucking laughable in that game anyway when you can just beat everything with limit.
So why hasn't the OP updated this thread w/ a Poll by now!?
My favorite systems were Materia and the Sphere Grid. The sphere grid may have seemed bad to some, but in FFX: International, building up to fight Penance was the longest I have ever played a Final Fantasy game, it was extremely addicting. I think I have around 250 hours on my FFX save right before killing Penance. I don't really need to explain Materia, it just worked so well in pretty much every way. Close second to those would probably be FFV, I loved levelling all of the different jobs.
Not really part of the topic, but I must add that FFXII had the worst system ever. I will never play that game again because of it.
Didn't Final Attack+Pheonix break a Mime chain if you were spamming KotR? I remember a specific reason why I never used the combo and instead just used Final Attack + Revive.
You guys have done Crisis Core yea? What did you think of the materia synthesis? I'm loving it at the moment, it's aninteresting twist on the system.
FF2 was really annoying the first time I played it. After a while I came back to it and really liked the system. It's kind of a grind to try and increase your stats, but still was an interesting system.
Been so long since I've played FF5/FF6 I don't really remember their systems.
FF7 was pretty nice. Definitely allowed for a lot of customization, but it was annoying having to switch materia when you needed to use different characters. Still, was fun.
FF8 is my favorite FF, so naturally I love the system. Drawing is a grind, but it was fun going to extra effort to get the absolute best spells for that point in the game. Only problem was I hated when I'd have to cast a spell since it would slightly weaken my junctions, but it's still my favorite system by far.
FF9's system was awesome as well. Simple and not much of a grind. Not really much else to say about it except this is my 2nd favorite system.
FFX. Fuck that game. Sphere grid = retarded.
FFXI - Uh..good I guess? Not really incredibly unique though.
FFXII had an interesting system. At first you can make each character somewhat unique, but once you start maxing everything each character just becomes a clone of itself. Quickenings were always kinda lame, but overall the attribute system was fun, imo.
FFTactics job/JP system by far on top for me. I'm never gonna stop wishing for a proper console sequel to that game with a pretty similar, but slightly improved system, even though I doubt they'd ever make one (or at least not anytime soon given how easier it is to cash in putting stuff on the DS).
After that, FFTA2 was pretty nice (more or less like a slightly more complicated version FF9's, although it had a bit too many jobs and too much overlap between them, thanks to the attempt to divide jobs by race - nevertheless, was still fun to play) and FF7 was always fun if you tried to find materia combinations in your own instead of resorting to guides and whatnot.
FF8's junction system, hands down.

It's great that all the 'best' materia can't be upgraded with stats. Full Cure, Ultima and the like all synth into Libra even with themselves meaning if you are serious about maxing your stats that you are stuck using Curaga and other not ultimate stuff.
I personally liked FF7's materia purely for the fact that I could crash both the PC and PS1 version by just using w-magic / quadra / Ultima on the second last boss (Bizarro Sephiroth?). The game didn't like it when you cast 24 Ultima's on it when its supposed to switch to a different party (if i remember correctly, it switched after you kill a certain part of him).
Espers is pretty good, but it pissed me off when I would forget to equip a certain Esper for a character's level up, or multiple characters that I wanted to raise Strength for would be leveling up at the same time.
