Didn't play all that many games this year but...

Fallout 3 gets my vote for GotY 2008. I really did enjoy MGS4 and hugely praise Kojima Productions for their extreme levels of detail and polish in their design and execution, as well as showing us all what the PS3 is capable of. However, as much as I enjoyed the interactive storytelling of MGS4, it did not capture my imagination and thoughts like Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 stands out, to me, as a greater achievement in developing an engrossing game world. I also believe that Fallout 3 showed greater initiative in developing new modes of gameplay with really the first ever successful integration of real-time run and gun gaming with a turn-based RPG. Even if others may feel that Fallout 3 as a complete package is not deserving of 2008's Game of the Year, I think that the VATS system deserves a special mention for technical achievement in gameplay.

I haven't played all the big titles this year (like Fallout 3), but of the games I played I have to agree w/ the majority on MGS4 for pretty much all the same reasons previously posted. I buy a lot of games but don't finish most of them because I maybe play a video game about 5-10hrs+ a week (generally). So games that take ppl a few days to a week to beat, can take me upwards of a month just because I like exploration and take my time. But MGS4 I just couldn't put it down... think I beat it in under a week and loved every minute of it

It's a shame I didn't play the first 3 MGS, cause I couldn't appreciate MGS4 at all lol. I'll pick it up again once I play the first 3. I haven't picked up Persona 4 or Fallout 3, but am I missing anything if I haven't touched the previous games in the series?

For Fallout 3 at least you won't need to have played the first two, the stories are separate and there are a lot of previous-game references that are somewhat explained. Since Fallout 1+2 took place in the California wasteland and 3 is set in the ruins of Washington D.C. and its environs, there's not really any continuity crossover except for a few character references.

Maybe without the duh, but I think WOW in general would be my personal GOTY.

Fully agree here. I didn't play the other two games. If you are interested in the back story behind everything, I'd head to the Fallout Wiki: Fallout Wiki - The Vault

More than enough IMO to catch up on things if you feel the need.

Braid for me, though my opinion may change. I got Fallout 3 for Christmas, so I'm only a few hours into that. My roommate got a PS3 with LBP and MGS4 for Christmas. I've been too busy with Fallout and LBP to start MGS4 yet. It'll be tough to top Braid for me, though.

Edit: Oh... Crisis Core would be a contender for me. Repetitive gameplay, sure. Great story/ending. D:

I wouldn't call it the best game of the year(I wouldn't call any game that actually), but my personal favorite of the year if we are only counting US releases would Yakuza 2. 50 hours burned into it.

MGS4 is a clear contender just on Act 4 alone. That place was just so damn haunting. But the way they tied everything up was well done.

Runners up would have to be Persona 4, Persona 3: FES, Lost Odyssey and Left 4 Dead.

And while we're at it, how about some ideas on most lackluster game? If anything, my vote probably goes to Force Unleashed.

Wait! I'm changing mine to Yakuza 2!

not really but I figure if I throw it out there more people will be interested in it and considering it's only 30 bones brandy new, that maybe people will buy it thus ensuring several more sequels to come!
