Need some Help

My sister just today is having trouble with her laptop, it wont boot up properly, when powering it up, it gives the error message that she is missing a file and windows wont load w/o the startup disc, will just a simple start up disc fix the problems. It's running xp, its a compaq, unsure on the specs of her laptop.

I'm assuming you tried to boot to safe mode already and still got this error? Or do you even get that far (it gives the error when in POST)?

We need error codes and particularly to know which file is missing. She'll probably need to reformat, but maybe not.
