If you like Watchmen, I'd recommend Sandman. It's a little out there, but it was the first (and last) comic to ever win a Newberry Award which is unheard of for a comic series. Also Broken Saints is good too but it's more of an animated comic strip, it's pretty deep stuff but it's worth a look. It originated on Newgrounds, but there's also a DVD set out.

Wow, can't say I liked that ending, and can't say I know who the hell Laurie's father was or the significance of making it one of the last things they showed. I thought it was Blake but was that him in the picture kneeling down at the end? Man.

edit: After watching the trailer again though, definitely surprised at how perfectly they copied exacts panels from the comic and brought them to the movie. Very cool.

Has it really gotten that big? I remember watching that on Newgrounds years ago.. it was really good, but I didn't think it would end up on DVD or anything, lol.

Laurie's father was the Comedian, she was conceived when he raped her mother.

The Comedian never successfully raped the first Silk Spectre. But after the attempted rape he came back to her and she actually consented the second time around. And that's when she was conceived. That's the argument young laurie remembers hearing in her snowglobe flashback.

Just finished reading the graphic novels, from beginning to end in one sitting. Story was incredible, hope the movie does it justice!

I never really heard of Broken Saints until there was a segment about it on Attack of the Show. I found it on Newgrounds, and I thinks some one is making a fan-made game about it but that was around 2 years ago. Its one of those bi-polar interests, either you love it or you hate it but it's got a cult following.

I guess I'm another person who decided to read the comic. To be honest, if I didn't know the significance of the story beforehand I wouldn't have known that it was anything more than just plain good. I liked some of the stuff in it, like how the kid who read the comic had that story relate to what was actually happening in the 'real' world, but overall I would say it didn't nearly live up to the hype.

There's a rich amount of detail that gibbons snuck into Watchmen that is often only plain to see on a second reading of the book. You could also use the cheat sheet:
