PSP just not worth it anymore?

I was curious about other peoples' thoughts:

Even the software support is eroding. Despite the PSP's healthy install base of around 13 million consumers, only six 2008 PSP releases scored better than 80% on review aggregating site gamerankings.com, compared with 16 on the DS. There's a good reason for that: nobody's making PSP games, because outside of one or two hits like this year's Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, nobody's buying them. That's only going to worsen when the superheavyweight Grand Theft Auto series (previously exclusive to the PSP on handhelds) releases its first DS title early next year.
In a lot of ways, it's a shame. The PSP is a far more capable hardware platform than the DS. It's a phone, a portable music player, a pocket-sized movie device, a mobile web browser, and when paired with a Playstation 3, a remarkably capable remote control for the system, capable of streaming music and movies from a PS3 over the Internet to wherever you happen to be.

What do you think? Is the PSP no longer worth it? I was considering buying one but I couldn't find a reason... and this article tilted me in favor of "no".

PSP's doing poorly because
1) it's up against Nintendo in the portable department. theyve been basically the only game in town in that category for a very long time and have built up customers and fans for a very long time, not to mention game companies trust as well.
2) the game selection is suffering from the very same thing the PS3 is.
3) PSP seems to me, to be aimed at an older crowd for the most part. A large portion of sales goes to the littler kids. I know I'd play my PSP more if I had someone drive me everywhere I wanted to go, but noooo, I cant play PSP and drive cause it's not saaafe.
4)it costs more. like the PS3
5)The very thing that makes the PSP good, is what makes the PSP do worse.
you can get your psp to play games you can torrent off the internet. which of course, doesnt get sony any money.

That being said, if you can hack your PSP to play torrented games, it's not really that bad of an investment.

Buy and mod it... otherwise it's not worth buying (sadly, since graphically it's far superior to the DS..)
I use my PSP for custom PSX playback more than anything (FF7/8/9, xenogears, some other stuff..)

then you need to know Dissidia is only on PSP, and it comes out in English (if you don't feel like dealing with learning any Japanese at all or trying to figure out the menus/skills/equip/summons via trial and error) sometime in the middle of 2009.

like, seriously, this is basically the equivalent of the only reason why I have a Wii... but PSP's got a lot more things if you put custom firmware on it than a Wii has for any kind of a draw towards it (besides Wii Sports & parties & beer & chicks that end up creating a drinking game out of bowling).

I thought about buying a PSP before buying my DS, I ended up going for DS because I kinda want to play original games instead of just playing PSX remakes/emulation, which barring some select titles, are the only games I'd probably end up playing on a PSP.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to undub second evolution once it's out and play SO2 on a portable with the japanese voice acting in all its glory, same with lenneth, but I can't quite think of any game outside Dissidia, Monster Hunter and Crisis Core that I haven't already played on their PSX incarnation.

For what it's worth, it has a stronger hardware and all, but if N64 and XBOX and now PS3 has shown us, it matters shit if everyone's developing more games for the other guy.

Was PSP ever worth it?

Sony just generally dropped the ball with it the whole way through. The new version has better graphics but really bad scan lines, and when asked if they're going to patch it, sony just said no. Way to fail.

Sad half the PSP games would have done better with a 2nd fucking analog stick. Why in this day and age sony went with one is beyond me.

I still have my PSP with the 1.5v Firmware. Yeah, its collecting dust somewhere and I use it to play just about anything except PSP games.

My PSP is a better GBA than my original GBA ever was.
Also: The only thing I use mine for is emulation / a rare PSP game that I play an ISO of because the god damn things have loading times.

Off the top of my head, some of the great games for the PSP are Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, MGS: Portable Ops, Chains of Olympus, both Monster Hunter games, both Wipeout games, both Lumines games, both LocoRoco games, Dissidia, Patapon, a Disgaea port that isn't stripped to bare bones, Me and My Katamari, and Valkyrie Profile. Still in production are Prinny, another Monster Hunter game, Resistance: Retribution, another Patapon game, and Phantasy Star Portable. Plus the multimedia abilities and the emulators, I don't know why it took so long for me to buy one.

off the top of my head all I enjoyed on my DS were the Phoenix Wright series, pokemon, castlevania, final fantasy remakes, and shovelware I only played because it wasn't costing me anything.

Also the "thing about the PSP being a phone" is that 2000s and up come preloaded with Skype.

I pretty much bought a PS3 for MGS4, Valkyria Chronicles, FFXIII: Versus (well, FFXIII was an excluse at the time too) and the new Kingdom Hearts, and I wouldn't complain about my purchase despite the high price 'cause I considered it worth it for what I've got/what I'm getting.

The PSP has plenty of good games and being able to portably emulate stuff is great (sure my DS can emulate stuff up to Genesis/SNES, but there's issues with both and a bunch of SNES games I'd really be interested in playing/replaying are nigh unplayable).

If you're on the edge about purchasing one, maybe this list will help, it certainly made me much more keen to buy it even though I was more than happy to do so just for Dissidia, KH and Agito; spoilered for huge.

The only thing I use my PSP for is playing emulated games.
I'm kinda thinking of getting a DS now that they're coming down in price and there's more interesting games coming out for it.

Depends on the games you are interested in. Personally, I enjoy playing fighting games and PSP is a very good system for it.

Also, it has rock solid RPG titles like FFT, Jeanne of arc and a huge PS1 library downloadable from PSN(sup SOTN, Suikoden, Wild Arms, etc. on handheld for 5 bucks!). Its durable too, I've imported it from Japan when it first came out and never had any problems w/it. In my opinion, it also has a wonderful screen for an handheld. Ability to play music and movies are also worthwhile bonuses.

If any of you saw the Valkyria Chronicles reviews in the Random Image Thread, the article pretty much reminded me of that.

IMO, any failures come from the new "casual gaming", "family friendly" and "kiddy" market that the DS owns.

As far as I know, via special cartridges. Download iso, load it into the cartridge and play.
