Know there were a fair few fans when we've discussed books on threads before - Terry Pratchett got a knighthood in the New Year Honours list... about fucking time - the guy's awesome.

Meh, it used to mean something, today it's thrown around a lot, as Wintermute pointed out. But in essence, it's a sign of appreciation for the contributions to society.
This specific type of knighthood has no military attachment of any kind to my knowledge.

Right after they won the Rugby World Cup. Whole Team got MBE'd and the coach and whasisface who made the luckiest kick of his life got Knighted iirc.

Its a shame. Some people really do deserve them.
