64 Bit Windows 7 Home Edition
64 Bit Windows 7 Home Edition
Ok, got it to work finally, followed the guide from Killing Ifrit that I'll add here just in case anyone else has similar problems down the road.

As originally posted by Octoberasian:
I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM with FFXI. Works flawlessly.
RTM was released to manufacturers back in September 15, long before it's available to consumers on October 22nd. This was also made available to TechNet subscribers on Microsoft's website, which is a $250 to $300 yearly subscription. On the upside, you get 6 valid product keys to go with it, and can download any FULL, BETA, or TRIAL versions of software that Microsoft develops and produces over the course of your subscription.
Also, students had access to this through MSDNAA, or Microsoft Software Developers Network Academic Alliance. You must be a student in computer sciences, programming, electronics, engineering, or related course at a technical school, college or university from my understanding. You get a similar subscription like those from TechNet, but at a much discounted price.
I'm a TechNet subscriber, and it's pretty worth it. I have access to about everything Microsoft makes for $250 to $300. ^^;
Ok, back to the original poster, this is what I did:
1. Download the Vista version of PlayOnline Viewer: http://dl.square-eni...polus/setup.exe
2. Right-click and Run as Administrator. Yeah, this is a slight difference from Vista.
3. Update it. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP.
4. Now, open up your FFXI expansion discs and locate the setup.exe files in each of them. Don't have to run as admin, just double-click the EXE file.
Also, it is best to install in this order like with Vista: Zilart > Promathia > Aht Urghan > Wings of the Goddess.
5. Don't configure anything yet. Log onto PlayOnline Viewer and update FFXI.
6. Sit back for the next three to six hours. Watch the clouds move by or see a movie. Whatever. XD
7. Configure FFXI. Or, if you fancy increasing the graphics detail, go here for instructions: http://wiki.ffxiclop...g/wiki/Graphics
For Windows 7 x64, the registry location is similar to Vista x64: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Wow6432Node > PlayOnlineUS (or PlayOnline if Japanese; PlayOnlineEU if European)
8. Now, usually this step is optional, but to be on the safe side go to Microsoft's DirectX website and download their updater/newest version:
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
This will download a few files, if you haven't done this already.
9. After installing, restart your computer.
10. Now, double check to be sure you have the updated video card drivers for your card. If not, you can download them here:
ATI - Windows 7 x64 - http://game.amd.com/...windows-7-64bit
ATI - Windows 7 x86 - http://game.amd.com/...windows-7-32bit
Nvidia - Windows 7 x64 - http://www.nvidia.co...91.07_whql.html
Nvidia - Windows 7 x86 - http://www.nvidia.co...91.07_whql.html
11. Install and restart your computer.
12. To run Windower, go here: http://forums.window...-compatability/ (http://aikar.us.to/Hook.dll)
You need to use the 3.42.2 RC2 Hook.DLL from that link. You can still use the 3.41 Windower version of the Launcher.exe, but need to replace the Hook.DLL file there in the same folder.
Also, right-click the Launcher.exe file and go to Compatibility tab. Put a check next to Run as Administrator.
That should get you to run FFXI.
Hello all, a bit late to the party...
I have a new desktop PC coming in in a couple days with Windows 7 and a Nvidia card... And just today did I discover all of those terrible lag issues with regard to FFXI and Nvidia... There was talk earlier in this thread of Windows 7 possibly resolving the issue, but unless I missed it (which is possible), I didn't see anyone confirming whether this was the case... In the likely event it is NOT fixed, in what ways can I go about fixing it?
I was talking with a friend and he mentioned he was able to install a driver for his Nvidia card that subsequently eliminated all lag... But this was on Vista and also over a year ago, and it was also for an older card (the one I'm getting is GTX295)... He also seemed suspicious that the change to this shady driver caused it to later fry and require replacing.
The truth is I don't know much about this crap, but I'm totally bummed out to discover this. I naturally assumed (and obviously blindly) that a PC like the one I'm getting would run pretty much ANY game flawlessly. Does anyone know if there is a "fix" for my inbound computer, assuming it suffers from this very issue?
I've got a Dell 1555 notebook running windows 7, its got an ATI mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU. From a full restart of windows my FPS varies from 11-29 depending on the zone and how many models are on the screen. I noticed that if I run Mass Effect 2 and then shut it down and run FFXI, my FPS will stay at a constant 29, only dipping as low as 25 in campaign and beseiged. Now I just installed the latest NVIDIA physX for Mass Effect 2. This is a shot in the dark, but is it possible that loading mass effect 2 is causing me to achieve better framerates? I've tested this multiple times. Each time ME2 is loaded b4 FFXI, there is a noticable improvement in framerate. Is it physX? Any ideas?
I know it's been a couple months but it sounds like your drivers aren't putting the video card out of its idle or power-saver state, but Mass Effect forces the card to increase its speed to maximum which then allows FFXI to run better. Just hazarding a guess here. Try fiddling with settings if you haven't figured it out yet and disable power management.
I just got a new computer runs Window 7 x64
When ever I try to get another PoL running so I can 2box the first one always crashs. With running windower and without. I don't know if the soluntion has already been if it has if you could just direct me to its location.
Ok after deciding to finally make the switch to pc i downloaded the ffxi collection torrent on a friends reccomendation ,
Now im on Win7 64bit i got the pol eu vista install and everytime i run it i get an Error saying playonline viewer has stopped working ; ; can some 1 please shed some light on this for me ?

Hi all, so I just built up a new Win 7 x64 machine and FFXI is running painfully slow on it with the latest drivers (258.96). I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I've tried every suggestion I can find to no avail.
I did the Vista version of POL and downloaded the new Hook.dll as recommended in this thread (v3.4.2.5). It runs properly, but painfully slow... 7 FPS in Whitegate with a background res of 1280x1024. It's a pretty beefy machine; i7-930 CPU, X58 north bridge, ICH10R south bridge, 6GB Mushkin memory (DDR3 1600), GeForce GTX 465, Intel X25-M SSD. It feels kinda like standing under a shower head with all but 1 nozzle plugged.
I read through the various threads here and saw people recommending using the 174.74 beta drivers, as well as the person who posted instructions for getting 191.07 working. I could not find a version of 174.74 that will install on Win 7 x64, so that was a no go. I did find a version of 191.07 which would install. I had to manually hack the INF since the modified ones above aren't recent enough to include my video card... I can't help but wonder if I screwed something up though, because when I try to run FFXI with these drivers installed it will not load. Says it was unable to initialize Direct3D. In fact, none of my 3D applications work with these modified drivers. So now I'm back to the current drivers (258.96) and 7 FPS, since 7 is better than 0.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

the workaround is getting an ATI card
I know there are threads about the nvidia gtx problems with ffxi, but I saw the most recent post about the gtx topic in this thread so I'll ask my question here:
I see that the recommendation everyone is saying is to just replace the gtx completely, but would just putting in a cheapo ati or an older model nvidia (for ffxi) acting separate from the gtx470 (for every other awesome game on pc I would like to play), in the same machine work? Just plugging the monitor I'm using into whichever videocard im intending to use at that moment?
If not then i'll prolly just go the route of returning my gtx when it gets to my home on Monday since im still somewhat of an avid ffxi player.
Figure I'll ask here so I don't start yet another thread. I'm using a ATi 4850 with 9.7 Catalyst drivers but they run XIV like complete shit and cause my PC to randomly blue screen but I've had no luck with updated drivers making XI run well. Is there any goddamned driver version that will work well with XIV and XI?
@ the guy above me: I have a 4870 and am using the most recent drivers and having no issues with ffxi.
I however have another issue. For some reason, ffxi is taking up an obscene amount of ram in windows 7. The current instance i have running has 756mb in the processes tab, and when I check resource manager the os has actually allocated 988mb. That's nearly a gig for one instance. This same rig under vista was able to very comfortable quad box in things like ein, with each instance using maybe 200mb. I can't seem to figure out why the game is taking up so much ram in windows 7. Any ideas?
I just got a new PC(windows 7), and my controller wont work, and my graphics look like PS2. Where is the FFXI config?! I found the play-online config, but i cant find the FFXI config. Need help!
I found the REGEDIT thing so the graphics look better, but now I'm wondering which value is to enable the controller?
type in the search bar final fantasy and it should come up with the config program.
Default path for it is: "C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ToolsUS\FINAL FANTASY XI Config.exe" if you want to find it manually
