just wanted to say thanks for all of the advice i got in this thread. i ended up picking up the eeepc900ha and could not be more delighted with it. the battery life while not 5 hrs from what i've seen so far is still more than impressive (and it's not been exercised enough yet so it may well be up to 5 hrs) the keyboard after getting used to is not a problem, and the screen/horsepower under the hood is astonishing for the small cost. if anyone's still on the fence, this thing is a full 2 thumbs up imo.
MSI Wind and put OSX on it..
Though that means no FFXI. lol
Thanks Shuemue
I'm still looking around but not too seriously as I don't truely need one, just will be a fancy thing to have, kinda.
Hey I'm interested in getting a netbook for ffxi as well, 3 things are important for me, windows xp pro, as thats the OS i've been using for years, price, and running ffxi with windower ( if possible multiple windower instances would be even better but I know this isnt very realistic ).
Can you run ffxi windower on your eeepc 900?
honestly, i haven't had a chance to even try, but since the guts of it outside of the hard drive are nearly identical to the 900 (i have the HA model with a hard drive in it. get that one. way more storage and it's probably FASTER in the end than the flash drive based ones.) and someone else demonstrated it working on the 900, there's no reason i can think of it wouldn't work. just don't expect to do dyna or campaign on it w/o it telling you to suck it.
My intention of getting a netbook would be to play FFXI but in low traffic areas (i.e. farming basic things) but also serve as a netbook I can use to store some entertainment/browse the web on it while I take it to some friends' house without lugging my bigger laptop with me. I have 1 friend that also plays so it'll be cool to take it around and sit in a room with him to play every now and then.
Still shopping around out of curiosity.
Has anyone actually installed FFXI and had it playable on an EEE PC? Just from toying around with mine and seeing how it starts to get laggy with just videos, I have serious doubts about it being able to handle any sort of game. I'd be interested to see if anyone has installed it and how it runs on them.
I forgot where but someone had an actual laptop pic of it running in a none crowded areas, commenting it's fine in low traffic areas. Let me try and find it.
EDIT:
Youtube barred at work but I don't see any reason why the video might not be up:

I linked to the post of the screenshot. Full thread accessible via link on top right.
EDIT2: With the boost in hardware compared to original getting it to run relatively smoothyl shouldn't be toooooo difficult considering the 2-3x boost in hardware.
