Looks like the last issue of EGM won't be shipping out. Instead, the final issue will be made available online. :x

I wonder if I'm gonna be credited for what's left of my subscription.

This is all kinda sad though.

Biggest peeve about EGM was too much gamer-stereotype humor. I mean a little self-deprecation is fine and dandy, but it got to be too often that humor attempts were lazy, tired "omg gamers are nerds lol" jokes. Guys, this is part of your audience, and when you constantly make the point that games have become more acceptable and have a broad audience, you undercut yourselves with too much of that shit. I also really miss when the magazine was huge 300+ pages and shit, like someone else mentioned.

But yeah, generally the features were good, reviews were respectable, previews were good in volume/description but that definitely tapered off in the past few years, and I liked the various "columns"- last page editorial, quarterman, hsu and chan, seanbaby, 10 years ago, etc.

also, since we're in a "fuck GI" mood.... fuck GI. the obvious bias towards western games was obnoxious as shit, but of course that's where most of the advertising money came from.

Whether you find it funny or not, it's still really true. Kotaku is now my only source for game information, and that's kinda sad.

It's not kind of sad, it's tragic. Kotaku blows. Most of their contributors have no journalistic integrity, but they don't have to because they get paid, and the site gets hits.

Kotaku is a great site as it's quick and to the point. If you needed more info there is a link provided to the source. Kotaku is really all there's to need.

Kotaku has terrible writers, and makes a lot of erroneous or unverified reports. Whether the source is available or not is irrelevant to the fact that they often don't cover the story properly in the first place. It's a blog-style site that's hardly any more professional than GameFAQs' message boards. It's not great, it's just -- unfortunately, due to low industry standards -- acceptable.

didn't kotaku recently get trolled by an obviously fake internet rumor then got all pissy when they found out? They are alright for quick info, but that's about it.

    Video Game reporting is:

    1) Timely
    2) Well-written
    3) Verified and Accurate

    pick one.

All three at Gamasutra, and -- for the most part -- 2 and 3 apply to IGN Retro, SEGA-16, and a number of talented writers. I don't know if "Timely" should apply to anything retro, though.

Nobody cares about writing about retro games.

    Really.

What could Nintendo Power possibly have to fill a magazine? The Wii hasn't had a good game in....I dunno, but my Wii hasn't played anything besides Smash Bros in like a year. Is there anything great coming out soon?

But gamasutra is industry oriented. For most gamers, it's not what they want

And I care about retro journalism. Good games are always good games and new games usually don't get in depth coverage that analyze gaming nearly as well as retro

You know what Nintendo Power is full of: stuff you don't care about. Isn't that what you just said in so many words? This off-topic jab is just silly. You should have just said "NO GAEMS LOL." Communication skills.

It still qualifies as "video game reporting," but I understand your point, and agree. However, a fair amount -- certainly not all, but a reasonable bit -- of the information reported elsewhere can be found on Gamasutra, like upcoming release information. It's worth checking, but the majority of its content certainly isn't geared toward more casual sorts.

And before anyone gets butthurt about my using the term "casual," it's all right. I'm not calling you a soccer mom that plays "Bejeweled" all day. Don't get your panties in a twist.

Aye, I care as well. IGN Retro and SEGA-16 are real good for that sort of thing. Unfortunately, I know of other sources which are comprehensive, but not necessarily interesting reads -- they're pretty dry. Still, I'm glad they're around, as they provide a great resource.

I feel the same way. My Wii has been collecting dust since I beat Twilight Princess. Poor thing. I like PLAY magazine though, they have alot of good writers I think, and they oftentimes get alot of original artwork into their magazine so it's nicely stylized and pretty to look at. Plus I work for those guys at SDCC every year and the people that work there are very nice.

I'll never understand the hype over it. I'm done with buying their consoles. I have all 3, and I wish all 3 were great, but the Wii easily gets the least playtime. If it weren't for Zelda and Smash Bros, I would have never opened the box.
