Well, on the one hand, it was smart of the kid to choose a less harmful ammo instead of the deer slug. He probably chose the ammo he did because he meant it more as a warning than an intent to kill, given that it was only in response to stepping on his foot.

On the other hand, it was a stupid response for something as insignificant as having your foot stepped on. He's going to have some issues growing up if nobody teaches him what an appropriate response is. I sure as hell don't go around whipping out my shotgun whenever someone steps on my foot.

But yes, the gun should have been secured at least well enough that the kid wouldn't have been able to use it at the slightest provocation of having his foot stepped on (or any other reason, other than self defense in mortal danger or someone breaking in to steal stuff).

The sheriff says possible violations include aggravated assault against the 4-year-old

As for the charges being considered by the Sheriff, the kid should be glad he didn't kill the babysitter or they'd likely end up being adult charges.
